I miss old Twitter.

We got him!!!

Who the fuck is Andrew Tate? Never heard of the dude before, and now suddenly he's like publicly trying to bang Greta Thunberg, who I don't think its of age yet, and he's getting arrested for child sex trafficking, rape and tax evasion. Who is this weird bald headed dude and why is his admittedly horrible bullshit any more news worthy than the next skinhead?

He's also a kickboxer and has an audience of millions of very insecure teenagers and man-children cosplaying as adults hanging on his every word about how misogyny is the only rational mindset. That's about it. He got banned from Twitter originally for saying that women bear responsibility for being sexually assaulted and publicly fantasized about revenge violence if his girlfriend cheated on him. Elon Musk let him back on.

It's mostly news because everyone who isn't an asshole looks at this guy and sees a hilarious ongoing train wreck. Spectacle porn.

So I looked into this and I guess Romanian police are just hysterically corrupt/incompetent. This guy wasn't "hiding" in Romania, he lived there. He has a villa and was well known in the city. This same villa was raided six months ago and the police found 2 sex slaves. And this new raid, on the same villa that somehow came as a surprise to everyone he lived exactly where he said he lived, also arrested several policewomen who may have been involved in coverups of the first raid.
This is like Trump posing in front of Mar a Lago and everyone like "OMG he's in Florida!" ...its like yeah, that's where his house is. Property ownership aren't like secrets.

Alternatively, if a story puts more Columbo into the world's collective consciousness, it's better than the truth.

What does a counter narrative look like? Christian films telling us LGBT people are going to hell? Folksy stories about how them uppity fellas from the hood are only there because they're lazy criminals?

Actually I think it was shared here, some absolutely golden films about a 50yo dude who was too cool to be corrupted by his adventures with the youths. Oh and the action hero piece about the vaxx denier saving humanity. So they exist, they're just a bit shit.

While I don't contest the likelihood of corruption and incompetence in the police, property ownership isnt the tether to rich people like it is to us peasants. It's not uncommon for the wealthy to only spend 3 months a year in their primary residence. So if the goal is to detain them, knowing they're home is important. Especially if they are aware of police interest, and avoiding it.

Especially if they wanted him AND his brother. Need to be sure they're both there.

Honestly, it looks like video games and anime. Conservative talking heads go on about how media is all run by lefties, but they also thumb their nose at genres that aren't based in Hollywood. Video games are almost inherently conservative. They are, by default, about the power of an individual. And the narratives are overwhelmingly about defending the status quo from outside threats trying to change things. Deconstructed Mario is a story of a singular regular working man personally defending a monarchy. That's part of why the token woke moments feel extra jarring in video games or superhero stories: comments about equality and solidarity are difficult to organically write into a tale of one protagonist personally saving the world.

Firstly: not all of them. Strategy games and stuff like SimCity aren't. And even many of those that take the viewpoint of an individual aren't necessarily about the power of the individual. Take any so-called "walking sim", in which the player is an observer. Or any of the "X simulator" games, cosy sims like Animal Crossing or Farmville... or in fact any of a hundred puzzle games which have no protagonist.

Secondly: I find it very, very telling that you think something being about "the power of the individual" makes it conservative anyway. That's, uhrm, completely at odds with how I'd describe conservatism.

And the narratives are overwhelmingly about defending the status quo from outside threats trying to change things. Deconstructed Mario is a story of a singular regular working man personally defending a monarchy. Gordon Freeman fights to bring down the government. So does the fella from Bioshock, whose name escapes me. The protagonists of Resident Evil fight to defend against a threat... which is propagated by unregulated corporate greed. The protagonists of FF7 fight to overthrow their corporate overlords who run the government.

If you don't see it, remove the S from taste.

Alas, the pizza box was not the reason the Romanian police knew Tate and his brother were in the country, and they were already planning their move before he posted the video reply to Thunberg. The twitter kerfuffle is just an amusing coincidence, as is the box

Just straight up saying that conservatism is incompatible with equality and solidarity
