I can't even feel sad anymore. That feeling went away after Rayman Legends. I do feel bad for those under the abusive hands and would rather see those find a better and more peaceful work environment.

This report about bitter 343 employees echoes Nick's point about the management structure of the company leading to Halo's failures:

This doesn't surprise me and it just confirms that mismanagement is the hugest issue of Halo Infinite. Horrible leadership and management from Microsoft and 343. I'm borrowing this link for a second. Thank you.

So NeverKnowsBest isn't really my jam as far as longform videos go(nothing against him but I'm not as engaged by him as a number of other youtube videogame essayists) but this particular video actually kept my attention more then a lot of his others. Mostly because China's place in the video game industry really doesn't get talked about aside from TENCENT and Genshin Impact, at least not in the wider discussion.

Aside from that, it's an interesting discussion and I can see that some of the games have cultural barriers to deal with. In particular, "Amazing Cultivation Simulator" sounds fascinating but also very.....different for Western audiences to engage with and it sounds like it has a lot of "Guide Dangit" tendencies at play. Maybe it's meant to be obtuse and that's expected from a Chinese and/or East Asian worldview as far as game design is concerned, while in the West it doesn't gel well with how games are normally played. I don't know. I have heard in Japan that it's more acceptable for certain story elements to be left unexplained/unresolved in storytelling but I don't know if China shares that viewpoint.

@Gyrobot, you probably know more about this topic then the rest of us do. Any thoughts?

My big gripe with the two Dark Souls ones is that they don't have any labels for the characters/scenes and I think they're pulling from the entire trilogy, making it very difficult to tell just what specifically is being depicted.

I get that the Mario Maker guy was dunking on him, but its the original flex I find baffling.
Oh, that account's whole schtick is making cherry-picked comparisons to 'prove' the superiority of pre-20th century Western art and architecture (which he pretty much equates with convervative christian culture). ricght-wing fuckery disguised as art snobbery.
