Piggy-backing though, anyone else feel like we're in the End of Days? The planet is basically trying to kill us, meanwhile, we can't stop killing each other; I think we're done for. A pandemic, tornadoes, record heat, flooding, a literal plague of crickets, war and political tensions, etc.; I don't necessarily prescribe to the Bible, but I might skim through Revelations to see how many boxes we've checked so far just in case I need to get my immortal soul's affairs in order.
Yes and no. There was a period between the end of the Cold War and the GWOT where things looked ok, no massive threats apart from climate change and there was time to do something about that.
But just over a hundred years ago, we had the First World War, which was then the 2nd bloodiest war in human history (or the bloodiest for people not paying attention to China). Then the flu epidemic, and the Russian Civil War, the Great Depression. In the US, man made climate change caused the soil to dry up and blow enough, enormous storms repeatedly blotted out the sun and covered the land in choking dust, with nothing much surviving apart from plagues of rabbits.
Fascism got popular, the Spanish civil war happened, "submarine pirates" attacked shipping in the Mediterranean in case they were shipping weapons to fight the fascists (many of the sunken ships were, many were not), but nobody wanted to call the Italians out on it and start world war 2.
Then world war two happens, strategic bombing of cities is now a real thing. 6 million Jews die in the Holocaust, almost as many people from assorted other groups are exterminated as well. A million people starve to death in the city of Leningrad, the Soviets had to institute anti-cannibalism taskforces. Even before the official beginning of world war 2 the japanese are murdering civilians in China by the hundreds of thousands.
Then world war two finishes...with the deployment of atomic weaponry, beginning a new age of warfare. France looks like its going to fall into civil war, but doesn't, Greece looks like it's going to fall to civil war and does. West Germany is forever disarmed...for a few years before people notice that West Germany is between them and lots of Soviets, and lots of ex-Wehrmacht personnel get new jobs in the Bundeswehr. Belgium, which was invaded twice in the last 40 odd years by Germany is understandably not pleased, and refuses to give them the rights to make FN FALS, which is why they used G3s.
Bert the Turtle tells kids how to hide under their tables in the event of a nuclear attack, and any number of crises look close to starting The Big One.
Pick any of those times, and it looks like the world was about to end right then. World War 2 and the Cold War being the more obvious examples, but the US dustbowl did have a biblical thing going on as well.
