I feel like, if somebody doesn't think a character moves fast enough, it's still a negative even if there's a way to compensate it, because presumably, said speed buff takes the place of an upgrade they'd rather use

Like, there's a difference between "the game feels good, but I like to go faster" and "the game is too slow, but there's an upgrade that gets it to acceptable"

I think you're meant to earn all the updates, it's not like a limited slot and you swap speed for power or something like that.

I mean, that's not really a positive either. Game feels bad to play until you've put 5 hours in to unlock the right upgrades also isn't really a mark in favor of it.

A game should feel good to play, and then the upgrades should make it feel better.

You've compared the game to Sekiro. Sekiro plays really well even before you get any upgrades, but the moment you unlock mikiri counter it feels even better. You don't have to grind the game for hours and get the firecrackers, shuriken, and ax to make the game play well. It plays well from the start.

Still not smart idea, and some of the worst kind of game design. I know it's the studio's first outing with this type of game, but they should know better.

Took the words right out of my mouth.

Played a bit of the demo, and it's not that great. It feels like it's running 15% slower than it should and there's a delay to your guard, which makes the parry - while not hard - feel unresponsive. Not something that becomes second nature as you play.

Visually... We've seen the trailers, and either you go for those designs or you don't. I don't particularly find what I'm seeing in this demo too engaging to look at. And the voice acting is ghastly, though maybe that's just the English dub. For as shiny and sleek as everything and everyone looks though it all just comes across so dry and expressionless.

Watching these overly sexualized women get slaughtered in what I assume is supposed to be this tragic scene played completely straight was fucking weird though. I'm not a fan of the Nier games, but atleast those games have a campy personality.

I do actually. I remember it having some of the most absurd as fuck jiggle physics to go with titty designs that Dead or Alive and Soul Calibre would treat as embarrassing.
That was what Shift Up was known for, J Cup totally not porn games with mediocre gameplay. Someone had to inherit what Takaki left behind 6 years ago

I played the demo last night and despite the fun, explodey intro which looks really nice as the fembo'ts plan of ramming speed and nothing afterwards goes predictably tits up, However, after being killed a couple of times by a flying starfish, I decided this game is not for me. I feel like it should be a fast paced game like Bayonetta or Near A Tomato, but the block and the dodge don't allow for that. I'm sure there is an element of "git gud" to it, but I can't be arsed.

Plus, the cute fembot dies doing the noble sacrifice thing. Worst game ever:)

You did that purpose, didn't ya?

I did too, but it was my fault for assuming/expecting in the first place. Like I said before, I got plenty of DMC style actions and HF Rush. I am not hurting for variety.

though maybe that's just the English dub.
God the English dub is shit. I have a hard time playing in another language though because it's just nonsensical chirping to me because I don't understand Korean, and I haven't heard Korean enough to piece together the phenetics like I have with Japanese. So it might as well be a Sims language to my ears. Which is totally a me problem, but it doesn't make the story easier to get into or understand and this story seems particularly nonsensical of top of all of this. And now I've used the word "nonsensical" three times in nearly as many sentences which is a record for me.

This is a Korean game so obviously playing it in Korean is the go to thing. The english dub has some weird british accent thing going for it which is very bizarre, I heard it in one of the trailers and it was just weird as all hell.

I don't speak Korean unlike Japanese so this will be fun though, I've seen a few things like the original Oldboy in Korean, and I watch some of em on youtube, this one lady with a bunch of cats and this other lady who eats enough for 20 grown men, so I have some very limited ear for the language and know like 3 phrases but haven't spent any time properly studying it so this will be fun.

Unrelated to the above, apparently Nier wasn't the biggest inspiration for this game, nor bayonetta, the director said that his biggest influence was the 2019 Battle Angel Alita movie, based on the old manga.

Much as I am repulsed by the animus these days, I did have a dalliance with manga/anime is the 90s and I have to say the original manga was one of the best, if not the best I ever read. The anime was decent too. I think it was the last of my old comic collection to get sold off.

There's tons of great stuff nowadays too. If you like that vibe of show try Chainsaw Man, pretty epic and brutal in equal measure.

I have the hardcover versions of the manga re-release. I do have Mars Chronicles, but I am a volume behind and wondering when it's going to end. The author stated this is the final series, but it is a long ass flashback to Alita's childhood before she lost her memories and fell off Zollum.

I did have the first 2 volumes of the original run in softback and then the rest in the monthly editions. I think it finished when she was somehow reborn/made in some weird flower bud thing on Tiphares/Zarem (I think Zarem might have been the name for it in the Anime?, or maybe I misheard Zollum) Not seen any of it after that, but it is the one manga I have occasionally half considered picking up to see what happened after.

Come with me on this brief journey of hopium....

If the reaction to Stellar Blade will be mostly negative due to the feel of combat- I mean we're all here agreeing it's sluggish and unpleasant to play- might this signal and end to the "Sekiro but shitty" style of combat that is dominating every game coming out that looks cool to me? *crosses fingers*

Nothing is over! Nothing! You just don't turn it off!

All joking aside, Sekiro but shitty style of combat hasn't dominated every game and you know that's not true. I am not batting for Stellar exactly and a reminder, that these are just glorified Dark Souls clones at the end of the day. How you feel is how I felt about the Gears and COD clones that are dark, dank, grey and brown shooters. Or how lots of games started throwing QTEs in haphazardly for no reason other than RE4 and God of War did it. I still say the shitty cover shooters are far worst than the Sekiro clones, because there so many of them with not much creative freedom nor artistic vision. At least the Sekiro clones have their own passion, characters, and art direction. Some form of soul. More than nearly any regen cover shooter ever could.

I don't know what's going to happen, but I've played games this year and last year that aren't even close to a Sekiro or Dark Souls. Also, it's not exactly over yet, because Black Myth: Wukong (黑神话:悟空) comes out this year in August. So look forward to that, if you decide to play it.

I would not disagree but that's not my problem because I don't like shooters. I mean, of course I want games to be better for everyone but since I do like melee combat action games I notice the trends more and will get disappointed when experiencing something like, say, the Stellar Blade demo or Armored Core 6.

I do not have good feelings about Black Myth- something about the animations or whatever seem... off. I can't explain it exactly, I'm suspicious. We'll see though.

Then just ignore them and focus on other action games. I didn't like Armored Core 6, but that didn't stop me from focusing on other games. I took that game and put it towards my Tekken 8 pre-order. One of the best gaming decisions I ever made.

You need to get started on Double Dragon Gaiden now! There's sale that ends in 15 days. The game is at $14.99 right now; hop to it!

Ninja Saviors is on sale for $7.99. DDG has much better replay value though. The Ninja Saviors sale ends tomorrow
