Whatever, just wash your hands.
Problem with just posting a bunch of videos is that it's surface level. You're not showing me how rich or expansive the game world is, how good the music is, what the storytelling is like, this combination of things that studios even back then could elevate to a higher level than modern indie teams.
Oh holy shit, its steam trailers, you can sit still and watch a 1 to 2 min vid to get an idea of what a game is about. Of course its not as good as playing it, but it still helps.

As for emulation, as BrawlMan pointed out, that frequently isn't a good option either, especially as you get into the 6th generation.
Most normal people don't mess with emulation; especially for more advance games.
PS2 emulation is really solid these days, especially for a high profile game like SH2, and it's trivial to find ROMs and play them. If you have a PC capable of playing the SH2 remake, you have a PC capable of emulating the original. If people won't take advantage of the resources available to them fine, but they can't pretend like they don't have the option.

That's still doesn't change the fact that most common/casual gamers don't want go through the hassle, despite being a bit easier. You're assuming everyone has the powerful or powerful enough hardware. Go ahead try convincing everyone that has a powerful (or powerful enough) PC, but either doesn't game on PC, highly prefers consoles, or all the above. Most of them are going to say no thank you or rather just play on consoles/wait for a modern port. Nor should you expect/force them to go through all of the tedious shit to get the original hardware running. I respect their choices and I can't hate them for what options they have available. You know this @Drathnoxis, but you choose to ignore everyone's different circumstances and plight. Not everyone has the same privileges, means, time, nor finances for all of that shit. You fucking remember that.

A reminder everyone....

That ruling cites the belief of the Entertainment Software Association and other industry lobby groups that "there would be a significant risk that preserved video games would be used for recreational purposes.

As long as you're willing to deal with framerate drops, graphical glitches, or finding and installing bespoke workarounds to the aforementioned issues. Which leads back to my point about barriers to entry. Besides, not everyone is playing SH2R on PC; lots of people still get consoles because they either can't afford a modern gaming PC, can't get their hands on a GPU because of crypto bros, or lack the knowledge to build their own PC and aren't in a position to get someone else to do it for them.

If people won't take advantage of the resources available to them fine, but they can't pretend like they don't have the option.
It's not that the option isn't there; it's that at a certain point, it's just not worth it, no matter how good the game is (when you're playing it on original hardware as intended).

Another option is to mod a ps2, which is probably the better option. You can get a PS2 off Ebay for cheaper than you can a copy of SH2. Less than $150 CAD with shipping, and shipping sucks in Canada. For reference that's less than the price of 2 new games on a console. I haven't modded a PS2, but when I did my Grandma's Wii it was trivial. The software does everything for you. Heck, I see one that's already modded on Ebay for $200 with shipping. But of course if we're making excuses there's an infinite number of reasons not to do something, no matter how easy it is.

Have played 40 minutes of Corn Kidz 64 so far. Some of the platforming ideas are a little weird, which I imagine would have been playtested and changed within a studio. Progression too. I've done enough in this world now that I want to move on, but can't see how, which would have been taken care of within a studio. Music is not as melodic as the games I named, sounds more indie. I don't get the point of the 240 line render. The scan lines don't look the same as a 240 line analog signal on CRT standard def TVs. Seems like a nice game, but will need to go deeper to see if it's really up to the level of studio game. Doesn't seem so.

So your solution to "it costs too much money and effort to play this old game" is to spend $150-$200 on a console and modify it to... do what, exactly? Look right on a flatscreen TV, I'm guessing?

Check your privilege.

Once again, assuming most people are going to have the time or take the effort to do that. Everyone is different, and only the super hardcore bother to mod their PS2s or pay someone to do it for them. Which can still cost a lot. Most casual and common people aren't going to do that. Leading us right back to what I said at the beginning:

Mod it to play roms. For $150 you can play the entire PS2 library on original hardware.

I couldn't have come up with a better response to Brawlman myself.

I might do this. A year or two ago, I bought two PlayStation 2 controllers for Metal Gear Solid 2 and 3 on RPCS3. (Well, I ordered one and the seller sent two.) Could never get the pressure-sensitive buttons to work in the emulator; ended up having to get a Retro Fighters Defender and PS2 controller adapter. Would be nice to put those controllers to use. I've had issues with a number of emulations.

What weak and limp dick response. Cuz you have nothing else to offer, Once again: go ahead tell everyone street with the "all you have to do is..." and see how many aren't going to bother. Spoilers: a lot aren't going to bother with all the shit you've mentioned. Especially in this fucking economy. A majority of people have lives, kids, jobs, and bills to pay. You're one of the lucky few and privileged. How about don't force your ways of life on others @Drathnoxis and @Ezekiel? Or is that too difficult for both you?/rhetorical.

I already know your answer. Have fun stewing in your elitism misery getting off your own farts. BrawlMan is out.

I'm more interested in getting an EverDrive for N64, but I probably wouldn't get enough use out of it and emulators work well enough for me. I'm not the kind of person to demand a game experience be exactly 100% perfect but also immediately dismiss simple, available, and affordable options out of hand.

With basic living costs rising as they are, I’ve found a lot of people cutting back on niche hobbies. Ten years ago, I’d have said “Yeah, pay the $200 for the modded unit and go ham”. But that $200 today is ear marked for groceries, rent:mortgage, fuel or other expenses required of day to day living.

Plus, not to put too fine a point on it, but entropy is a thing and the PS2 (which is the one I’d get and mod for a wider library) will be old enough to rent a car in the US next year. Those units are kind of at a point that without regular maintenance that let us be honest was beyond the ken of most of its user base, their stability is closer than not to very unreliable.

I’m not saying there isn’t options, but I think you’re vastly overestimating people’s willingness to pay for them or put up with the fucking around to make them work.

People love to say they don't have money, but if you are playing games at launch and then turn around and tell me you don't have enough money for that, pardon me for not believing you. And gaming dirt cheap as far as hobbies go. Dinner out at a nice restaurant for two will run you close to $100 and I'm not even exaggerating. Also to be clear that's $200 Canadian, in USD it's $150 for the already modded PS2 $100 for the stock model.

You may have a point about reliability, though. That's potentially an issue. I haven't ever had a problem with my PS2, though and I've had it for more than 20 years.

A game on release is still less than the PlayStation at $70 against $150 (because who buys unmodded in this scenario?) and can be expected to work with a minimum of fuss. And if they don’t, refund or other recompense is readily available.

I don’t disagree it’s doable and if you want it then you can certainly find a way, but for someone for whom gaming is an enjoyable hobby rather than for lack of a better word lifestyle then its going to be a very limited value proposition against the rest of everyday life.
