He knows he can't fulfill his desperate terminally online need for validation without compromising investor trust, a major source of his artificially inflated wealths. Elizabeth Holmes was just the easiest tip of the iceberg, a glass cliff even. So much of tech investment is sweet talking bullshit from CEOs who will do and say anything to keep on top of the "growth" pyramid, and they know they haven't got any ideas left yet that line has to keep going up somehow, so then we get housing bubbles, crypto bubbles, AI bubbles, any bloody shiny thing to maintain the illusion of meritocracy. including this, for lack of better phrasing, billionaire's equivalent of pulling a sickie to get off work and having to compulsively post their compulsive funsies on alt accounts instead

Musk isn't the town druggie(well he is but still...) so I don't think he really believes it. Musk problem is more that he's a nazi, and very comfortable with being a nazi. But he knows the public isn't nearly as comfortable with it, so he must find ways to keep the policies but divorce them from the name. So just pretend Hitler was a lefty and that all those policies of him Elon wants is just good old fashioned conservatism without any historical examples of it going wrong.
I'd go a step further and say that forces in the US right wing have put substantial effort into deliberately conflating socialism and totalitarianism (including Naziism).

To be honest, I think it's much more simply that he got so rich and successful that "it went to his head" and he stopped having to consider anything anyone else. He's been a billionaire for a long time, but only amongst the ultra-billionaires once Tesla took off. So we'd be looking at when the share price for that really started motoring around ten years ago, with his derangement accelerating in parallel to its growth. He's essentially a model for how dangerous and corrupting having too much power can be and how poorly many handle it.
