Picked up Alan Wake 2 again. Partly because I wanted to see what it looked like on my new screen, and partly to wash the personality void that is Ghost of Yotei out of my brain. Also, I really just want to like this game, because in regard to its vibes it's just right up my alley, but there's something to the gameplay that doesn't sit too right with me. That opening forrest area that the spend the first two chapters in is really quite brilliant though.

Yotei does have personality is just more subtle about it, compared to Tsushima.

The gameplay works, but is just more methodical than the first game. The controls do take a more RE2R inspiration, but this is nothing new for either games. AW1 main insuration for shooting is RE4. What I love about AW2, that it has the deffensive options of both RE2R and RE3R. Meaning you can dodge and you self defense options. Something that was lacking in RE3R for the sake of "balance". A crazed writer and FBI agent have more defensive options than a former SWAT officer and a mercenary. Talk about irony.

I will say that the clue board will get repetitive after a while. Some of it is scripted to and there are certain others that have too many obvious answers, where it wasn't even needed in the first place.

Both have about the same level of personality, which is my problem with this series. There's something about the characters, how they're presented, that's just not connecting. The fact that the only recurring characters in Yotei seem purely based in utility doesn't help much either.

Something about it doesn't feel as refined as either RE game though. I remember playing it for the first time back when it first released, and that boss fight against Nightingale almost made me completely hate the game. The balance was just off. I'm playing on Story difficulty now just to take the edge off the frustration. I had no real issue with Alan Wake 1 though, that was a far more engaging third-person shooter.

That sounds more like a you issue than an on going issue with either games. These games have themes and personality. You're just not into it. That's fine, but I will forever disagree with you on this. I don't need every game to have a bombastic personality. Nor clinically depressing either. What works for one game works a different way or it doesn't work for another. So on and so on.

Lo-fi soundtrack is awesome. That only adds to it greatly.

I was able to beat Nightingale fine on my first try. He wasn't easy, but I didn't find him too difficult either. Remedy has long patched all the issues with the game. So you should have gotten the update by now. I was able to beat the game on normal mode.Without that many updates. Everyone is different though. Play your way.

The first game had a more almost arcade style feel to it even though it was story driven. I do admit that the shooting is a bit snappier, but it just boils down to style and personal preference. Shadows of Damned as much better shooting than either game, but i'm also referring to the first one since they have so many similarities. Even though both games are going for completely different tones.

Mohrta came out and its awesome. Its by a dev known as Scumhead, who has done a number of gzdoom engine games and a metroidvania. Such as Shrine, Shrine 2, Vomitoreum, Angels Gear. If you know anything about Scumhead then you know hes got a really interesting visual style that his games go for, almost always dark, organic, strange and always fascinating. Mohrta is no different, except this time its in 3d and feels like its got much more production value then hes usually able to do. Each world you go to in Mohrta has drastically different visual designs going on and even different enemies. So far they tend to have similar flow, you find a few keys, open a door, fight a boss and repeat, each world seems to have 3 areas and its not uncommon for those 3 areas to be pretty different and even have different enemies.

I was a bit worried about how it would play since it felt kinda rough when I tried the demo awhile back, but it plays pretty damn smooth now. Not the hardest GZdoom engine game, especially since you carry around a healing doll with you, but once you start getting up there in worlds it can start to knock you around, but you can always upgrade your armor if its being too rough. There is a really cool hub area where you can upgrade weapons, healing doll, and mana injector. I do wish there was more dialog there since the world is so cool, but occasionally characters there will talk about different things which is nice.

Is it completely unrelated to this one:

They look so similar I thought they were shared universe

Completely different universes as far as I can tell. Never played Dread Delusion but just from the trailers and the fact that Scumhead wasn't involved with it makes me think they are totally unrelated.

Playing Lone Survivor, a game so old it came out before Bee Movie became a meme.

I imagine by this point everybody's played it or deliberately forsaken it. You play a lonely dude in a face mask hoveled inside his apartment living off crackers and slowly losing his sanity as the apocalypse rages on throughout the building and the outside world, and I still haven't seen a single paycheck. Go figure.

It's a very Silent Hill-y affair, except it's 2D and it's kinda hard to make sense of the map, which displays a bird's eye view of the apartment building. And you're on a timer of sorts, since you're constantly going hungry or sleepy or running out of batteries for your flashlight. That part's a bit annoying but it's not clear what failure entails yet. The game's very cryptic about how exactly it is governed by tradeoffs and fail states.

Eerie stuff.

Man that was forever ago!

iirc, the game kinda just abruptly end, like the dev just shoved it out the door at some point.

I know there's a gazillion different endings based on player choice/behavior, maybe the 'true' ending is the one that feels earned?

Playing Ghost of Tsushima, I realize one of the things that makes every single open world wilderness game that I've ever played blander is the lack of real density in all of the trees. I wouldn't even call these forests.

Decided to play some Ninja Gaiden II Black to prep for Ninja Gaiden 4. Still fun, and I love chapter challenge mode.

Yotei is so tranquil to ride around and do things when not in combat. Even more tranquil than Tsushima due to the lo-fi hip hop.

Nothing boring about it at all.

Yyeeahhh.... no thanks lol

This was the game that was the sole focus of the last Devolver Digital showcase during the last Summers Games Fest. And my immediate and correct reaction was "oh look, it's Trendy Indy Game: The Game." This game looks like it's to indy games what any recent Ubisoft game is to AAA games- a mush of all the things that seem to trend with popular things.

Don't get me wrong- I'm sure I'd enjoy this for 5-10 hours. I'm not proud of it, though.

If you're having fun, then you did nothing wrong. You're talking to someone who played 8 Call of Duty games during the middle of summer. I enjoyed almost all of them.

Beat Mohrta. Really excellent game. Gameplay was good throughout, world and story was really interesting if kinda wonkyly told, characters were all lots of fun, weapons were somewhat mixed, but there were enough that you would always find something you liked to use. Really the main downside is that you just really want more, the game is so creative and the characters are so interesting that you just want more of it, but this is kinda something that happens with Scumhead's games. When you do get dialog and such, its never enough. Plus you really want more explanation for the worlds he comes up with.

Oh, the sound track is also killer and the dev uploaded the full thing for your listening enjoyment.
