The Orville: Season 1 (4/5)
snippers
Maybe not suprising anyone, I think Orville is better than TNG. And that's saying something because I really detest the two leads romantic relationship. Its pretty horrible. And Seth cant really act and is probably on the level of Sirtis. The humour isnt really funny, I'd prefer to watch Family Guy. Bortus species is pretty uninteresting in Season 1.
The Flash: Season 4 (3/5)
snipadoo
I think season 4 was better than 2 and 3. But I dont necessarily disagree with your points but to add that somehow Devoe couldn't see his wife's deception? But can literally see everything else? After he has been seen multiple times manipulating his wife into certain positions? Yeah no. That's not how it works. Also. No Nora Thanks. Lastly, it's bad to find out that Dibney acts like that in real life and got fired. The show is literally telling you not to be an asshole, but he just cant do it.

Can't agree with any of that.

The relationship between Ed and Kelly is, IMO, well done. It only stops being well done when they attempt to rekindle the relationship at the end. But I like the dynamic. Similarly, you're not the first person to criticize Seth's acting in the piece, but I really don't see it. He's able to hold his own with the actors around him. And while the humour isn't perfect, it's not excruciating like Family Guy (or at least Family Guy in its current incarnation). The jokes in the Orville are, at worst, unfunny. Family Guy's humour, at worst, is pointless (the cutaways) and mean spirited.

As for Bortus, he's certainly not my favourite character, but he does provide some humour.

I sort of agree, sort of don't.

On one hand, it's a plot point (sort of) that deVoe can't account for human emotion, so Marlize leaving him does fall into that. On the other, emotion kind of drives humans, period. So, apparently he CAN account for emotion, just not when the plot demands him do so.

Also. No Nora Thanks.
What's wrong with Nora? Nora's cute. :(

Lastly, it's bad to find out that Dibney acts like that in real life and got fired. The show is literally telling you not to be an asshole, but he just cant do it.
Except that the tweets the actor made were made years before he joined the show, had been deleted, and only resurfaced because someone dug them out. He apologized, but in today's cancel culture, that's not enough.

If the actor had made the tweets while on the job, maybe, but he hadn't.

Recorded by Arizal: Prelude (3/5)

This has got to be one of the strangest cartoons I've watched/rated. I'm going to reccomend that you look at its wikipedia article, because it does a better job of explaining the production context and manner of delivery that I can. But I'll try here.

The series focuses on Arizal, a student in the city-state of Mantaba. The entirety of the prelude (four episodes, which may as well be a "season 0") involve Arizal talking to the camera about life, the universe, and everything. Or, more specifically, her wanting to be a record keeper - someone who travels the world and collects knowledge. To the cartoon's credit, it manages to convey a lot of character information in a very short amount of time. If I was ranking this based on the first three episodes, I'd have given it a 4. However, ep. 4 feels disconnected from ep. 3, as if there's a missing episode. It's the one episode that takes place outside Arizal's room, and there's little indication as to how she got to the location she did. Also, budget cuts seem to play a role in this episode in that it uses a black screen to stimulate darkness for awhile.

There's another issue with the cartoon and that's worldbuilding. Now, in fairness, a lot of the issues come from background information, but even so, I'll delve into it. We get hints of worldbuilding in the prologue that's sparse, but not really to its detriment. However, according to background information, our titular character is Filipino. Okay, sure. Nothing wrong with that. However, from what I can tell, this statement is meant to be taken literally...but if that's the case, where the heck is Mantaba? The Philipines? Their calandar places them sometime in the 15th millennium (they use HE rather than CE), so if this is Earth, and insanely far in the future, and the Philipines exist, but with city-states...well, that's not impossible, but there's no hints of this in the show itself. Maybe it'll be explained, but I doubt it. At least not unless the series gets the greenlight.

Anyway, it's decent. Just expect a gap to appear for ep. 4, and try not to think about the worldbuilding too much.

Stargirl: Episodes 1&2.

So far.....eh? I'm a sucker for legacy stories, so I'm curious on some level, as the show heavily banks on the legacy angle. Which again, I'm down for. And I get that it's cheezy on purpose. Again, I'm fine with that.

But, so far I just don't like the main character. I get that she's supposed to be 15, and thus young and dumb, and headstrong. But they never actually balance that out. She's just...a *****, a lot of the time, which is odd, since the way the show chooses to indicate which other female characters are the antagonists/bad girls....is by showing them acting like bitches. (edit note: interesting, single case of bitches is bleeped, plural is not. gosh i love autofilters!)

No joke, there is one scene, where they jump from one character, who is coded to be a villainess student, telling off her mom in a very rude and blunt way, IN PUBLIC, and framing it as "see? She's a bad girl, we don't like her." And then immediately jump to Courtney (Stargirl), doing pretty much exactly the same thing. She's barking orders to her stepdad, being rude, disregarding everything he says, in public. It's literally the same display of behavior, in the same public activity. And I'm somehow NOT supposed to think she's just as bad as the villainess then?

I find it strange, because the character, is based on the creator's dead sister. She died back in the 90s in a plane crash, and he tried to immortalize her with Stargirl. Which is fine, that's a very touching way to remember a loved one, I'm down for it. But he's also the shows main lead producer/creator, so he's got direct control over how Stargirl is portrayed....and she's a stuck up *****. Which...seems contrary to the way he's described his sister. I was talking with a friend of mine about it, and he said that maybe he's suffering from rose tinted glasses syndrome, and thus doesn't see the traits he's given the character, as bad ones? Or maybe they just wrote her poorly, I dunno. *shrugs*

I'm also not a fan of the first villain shown being the typical "Smart powers = villain" and "physical powers = hero" trope.

The wife and I are going to keep going through the show, but so far I'm not very invested. Which is bad for a legacy premise, as that's already got a LOT of buyin from me. But so far, this show has torpedoed a lot of that buyin, in just 2 episodes. So....*sighs*, we'll see.

New Cutey Honey (1996 OVA) - It's Sailor Moon before Sailor Moon ever existed. The franchise has been around since the early 70s. It's just a fun, entertaining, magical girl show with plenty of action and lots of nudity. I bought the Blu-ray box set on sale for $18.00 on Amazon. This version of the show was supposed to have 12 episodes, but was cut short and production stopped at 8. You can tell there were budget cuts, because the animation and line works looks rough in some areas for the final episode. Episode 9 is an audio drama that comes as a bonus on the blu-ray The English dub is amazing and still holds up as one of best dubs from ADV. May they rest in peace. So much, that they brought back all of the voice cast to do Cutey Honey Universe.

This is a show with fan-service, but it's fan-service done right. Fan-service can only work when done in small doses or the person with those tits, have a personality. And that personality better not be set to b(i)tch, asshole, or the c-word. This means you Asuka Langley or Naru Sarugawa! Honey is the complete opposite of them. Kind, compassionate, protective, and considerate. Don't let that fool you, she can clever, crafty, quick on her feet, and has all of those detailed transformation sequences. For those interested in some fun 90s anime with awesome animation, I highly recommended this version of Cutey Honey.

Let's Play Illbleed, by Supergreatfriend.

This is both one of my favorite and one of my least favorite of SGF's let's plays. One the one hand it's a fantastic look at an extremely bizarre game, where he goes to great lengths to show off as much content as he can, including all the traps you would miss if you played well. He put a lot of editing work into this series, which is something that he just doesn't do very much these days. There are a couple moments later on in the Toyhunter chapter where he sounds like he's sick or drunk or something, but it doesn't really detract too much from the playthrough.

The reason it's one of my least favorite playthroughs is his true ending run. Getting the true ending requires playing the game all the way through a second time on new game+ and apparently he felt that he wouldn't be able to come up with enough commentary to cover the game a second time (later series have proven SGF more than capable of this). His solution was to include a voice chat of random people with bad microphones to provide a never ending cacophony of noise that drowns out both the game and the one commentator that we came to see. To steal a comment from Youtube, it's as if the comment section were over-top of the video, rather than below. It's completely unwatchable and essentially means that his let's play has no true ending. Thankfully, it's the only time SGF has ever made use of a voice chat, so he apparently learned from his mistake. Still, it makes me sad every time I rewatch the series that I can't enjoy the ending.

Combination of everyone being quarantined on release, memeability factor and tabloidy appeal. Imagine if Pain and Gain were a documentary series where every episode pushes the boundaries of credibility while going Can you believe this shit happened?

Most of the draw was the sheer absurdity of it. Nevermind guys rolling around with large, deadly cats like they're house pets or murder plots, I'm talking about a staunchly conservative, flamboyantly homosexual polygamist. You can't make that stuff up. He gave away personalized condoms as election swag, I mean, what in every fuck?

I just wish the series had some heart to it. Give me one likeable person, or at least something to like about anyone. Other than the occasional victim-but-kinda-complicit clueless talking head everyone is filthy and abusive and the series does nothing but revel in it.

I don't think the show was intended to be formulaic entertainment so much as it was a glorified freak show. My understanding is that it started out as a genuine documentary about a big cat sanctuary and devolved into a much more "interesting" shit show of degenerates as the various, shocking facts came out. Just saying, I think you got exactly what they intended.

Now, go watch "The Platform" and tell me about "gross."

I watched The Plataform. It is gross but on a superficial level; had the same problem with it as with the Aronofsky Mother movie where the story is so obviously an allegory that you stop caring for it or the characters on a literal level. La Grande Bouffe and The Cook, The Thief, His Wife and Her Lover are way better and more effective with their commentary on gluttony and classicism.

Tiger King on the other hand is a true story. Animals are abused on camera. People are mauled and gored on camera. One person loses their arm on camera. Someone else commits suicide just out of camera. It's selling itself as this Grand Guignol spectacle and as morbidly entertaining as that can be it's also hard to get past all the very real misery and suffering.

I took a break from TNG. Got to half way through season 4. It’s been fine, but hasn’t matched the really good episodes of the first half of season 3

Umbrella Academy S2. I’m aware Gofias just started so...

Well, the girls got partners and the boys got squat. Make sense for 5 doesn’t die to timing reasons but they dropped Luther’s storyline like a rock. I didn’t care about him and Allison’s relationship in S1. Don’t care for it here either. Klaus’ cult didnt do much either. Diego did get a partner but.. you know. His storyline was probably the best

Why did the put Elliot in this at all? It doesn’t feel good when a character is made to die only. The 100 operatives showing up at the end was pointless too. Even AJ. Just there to die

it’s sounds like I’m being harsh but it was generally good.

I thought the writing was more consistent on this one but I don’t feel it reached the heights of season 1. Overall 8/10
I liked Season 2 better than 1 but to each their own. It was some of the most fun I've had watching TV since Amazon Prime's, "The Boys". (Season 2 of that drops in a month or so!).
For example, I really enjoyed the cult. I loved the throw back politics and atmosphere. I felt like I saw more genuine super hero stuff, especially from Diego. Little tough to follow in that their powers are growing. They're doing stuff now they didn't do before.
The Orville: Season 1 (4/5)

So, overall, I enjoyed The Orville. It's rough around the edges, but it does get better as the season progresses, and while it's a mix of things, it's a mix that does work overall. It's also a show that can exist irregardless of Star Trek, so there's that. Overall, had fun watching it.
I'd compare it favorably to "Galaxy Quest". It wants to spoof Star Treak but, dang if it doesn't love that IP so much, it gets pretty darn serious for a comedy. Can't wait for Season 3, which I think is scheduled for Hulu.

I'm less offended by (not to be mistaken for "appreciative of") Tiger King because it's a true story; it's misery and suffering (agreed,) but self-inflicted. It's impossible for me to sympathize with anyone in the show beyond a nominal level that pretty much stops at "well, if you weren't such a fucking idiot..." They're comically stupid, and it's hard to invest in them as actual people. All that said, Tiger King is like a protracted and violent episode of Jerry Springer. Don't go in expecting any level of intellectual stimulation, and you can appease your inner sadist and marvel at some next-level stupidity for its own sake. I seriously rooted for the tigers throughout the series, like, "eat these people before they fuck around and procreate."

Side note, "The Platform" really caught me off guard; I picked it on Netflix out of curiosity, and regretted it. I'm really sensitive to body horror (no idea why; it just guts me,) and the shameless idea and depiction of murder for cannibalism really knotted my stomach in ways films that depict similar things haven't to date.

I feel like the throw back politics has been done lots already, even recently. And I have an aversion to cults. Diego was more of a detective in the first season, this one... he just reacts and no longer uses much of his brain. But the girls were given far more extensive storylines in this season, Ben was given something to do and AJ was fun. And it didn’t have much Allison and Luther stuff because they aren’t an interesting couple.

Finished the first season of Stargirl. And....yeah well, it's a show. Sadly I don't have too many things positive to say about it.

The lead character is annoying, and never really stops being annoying. Yes she's supposed to be 15, so there is some leeway given, but she exceeds that in my opinion by about mid-season, and just keeps going into pure annoyance. The actress is just fine, I'm not knocking her, it's the writing.

I guess I should maybe toss up spoilers? If anyone actually cares, yeah ok I will.

So, about the rest of the cast.

The girl Beth, who I THINK they were trying to imply has a socialization disorder of some kind? She is just so fucking annoying. She just wanders around, literally spying on people, and thinks it's just perfectly fine. She gets the goggles that give her her "super power", which translates to the glasses from Spiderman Far From Home, by sneaking into Stargirl's room when she's not home, and just TAKING them. She then proceeds to stand there, in her room, scanning EVERY detail, and is totally confused when Courtney (Stargirl) comes in, finds a stranger in her bedroom, wearing some of her stuff, and is justifiably pissed about it. She has like a split second where she frowns like "processing, compiling, human behavior suggests this was wrong, I should redirect" and then does literally that, distracting Courtney from her justified criticism of Beth, with some random tidbit of knowledge. She has zero filter, and I'm supposed to find it....I dunno, endearing? Well it doesn't work. She's obnoxious and annoying, and even the other people in the show feel that way about her.

Yolanda (Wildcat), is from a ridiculously conservative, christian latino family, and she does one thing that gets her in trouble socially (she sent a tit-pic to her boyfriend), and they treat her like a fucking leper. The school also treats her like she's a slut, even going so far as to grafitti it on her locker. Now, I find this really dumb, because let's be real, at least HALF of those kids are sexting each other on a daily basis, and talking about it to their friends. And I know this, because one of my friends had a similar issue with their daughter, finding out that her little cluster of girlfriends were all discussing what guys they were going to suck and fuck. It was just casual conversation for them. So yeah, a school with hundreds of students, and only one is sexting? Yeah, bullshit. Also, she is incredibly hypocritical. First off, she literally tries to KILL the guy who she sent the picture to (they were dating at the time, so it was consentual), because she feels that the embarrassment she felt for a few months, among teenagers she will never talk to again when she graduates highschool, justified KILLING A GUY. He even confronts her about it, when she shows up in her power catsuit to kill him, "you really think I should die for what I did to you?" "YES!!" Ok so, overreact much. Also, I'm still not even sure how it's his fault. Given the scenes presented in the episode where we learn she is shunned at school because of a tit-pic, it's never actually established that he shared it around. In fact, the Bad Girl who ultimately DOES share it, is shown taking his phone from him (because she was scheming to break them up because she wanted him), and he immediately snatches it back from her, clearly not wanting to reveal what was on it. And then later, without any real explanation how, she's got it on her phone, and uploads it during an assembly. And she only had the phone for like seriously 2 seconds. And we see, she didn't have it long enough to do anything with it. And she doesn't have technology powers or anything (something that you actually have to establish in comic book land) So, yeah I'm still confused on that. But, the guy, Henry, doesn't claim he's innocent, even when confronted multiple times. So, I guess he DID share it? It's very fuzzy.

Then further hypocrisy from Yolanda, near the end of the show, one of the other heroes is angry at a villain who killed his parents, and he declares he's going to kill him. Yolanda actually pulls the "Killing is bad, because God Mmkay?" card....and then not 5 minutes later, kills a guy in cold blood. In fact, given what her claws do to flesh, and the fact that she had been fighting hordes of mind controlled thugs of the villain, it feels like she killed a LOT of people already. But this one was very clearly meant to be a big kill. And she does it without hesitation, or remorse. It wasn't self defense, it was "oh, he's a bad guy, I'm going to slit his fucking throat." And the reason for it, is WAY less personal than the guy she was condemning for his violent nature, yet she acts like she's totally justified because of the grief SHE was put through by this villain.

I forget his name, both real name and hero name, but the guy that Yolanda was condemning above, is also the most stock stupid Hollywood Atheist trope ever. Yolanda tries to console him when we learn that both his parents were murdered, with the cliche shit of "it's god's will" or some such tripe. And the boy gets angry and yells "Well if god didn't do it, then who am I supposed to be angry at?!" Which is just....sigh, so fucking dumb that it makes me want to scratch my eyes out.

Also, the one kid character that we actually LIKED, gets "killed" though I doubt that will stick more than a single season. Henry, the kid that shared the tit-pic of Yolanda, who is also the son of one of the villains, and inherited psychic powers of telepathy and telekinetics from his villain dad. Actually has a really good Heel/Face turn. He reminded me a lot of the boyfriend jerk character from season 1 of Stranger Things. Who is your stereotypical Jock Asshole, but by the end, realizes the shit he's been doing was bad, and turns his life around, to the point where by season 2, you love him. Henry has a similar arc, and we were cheering for him to shake off his father's conditioning to become a bad guy, which he does in a really satisfying way....right before he's "killed."

They "confirm" he's dead, because his father, who killed him, claims he drained his son's powers when he died, like a Highlander apparently. This made him stronger, and thus could implement their Evil Plan over a larger area. My theory though, because we don't SEE Henry die (and even if we did, it's comic reality, death is a vacation), is that he did lose his powers, but didn't die. And that now, as a normal guy, powerless, but with a really strong WILLPOWER, to resist and defy his mind controlling father, he will be a prime candidate to pick up the Green Lantern (which they establish is one of the items Courtney has and is trying to find a bearer of), and he'll join the show again second half of season 2, maybe 3.

None of the kids pay any attention to any adults in the show, which I get, since it's a kid's based hero story, so they have to be the ones to solve the problems. But, you usually offset that with adults who are oblivious, or incompetent, or both. The teachers in Harry Potter for example are really stupid, and can't be relied on for anything really. But the adults in this, Courtney's stepdad specifically, are very competent, but the kids just roll their eyes at the "dad" trying to tell them stuff like "Hey these are actual KILLERS, who have slaughtered heroes far stronger than any of you. You don't just walk into their house and poke your nose around!" And there like "Pssh, whatever GRAMPS!! What do you know!? You're just an ADULT! Who has fought these guys before, and has been alive 3-4 times longer than us, and have personal knowledge about all of this stuff! "

And this isn't just me as a 43 year old dude, my wife also felt they were very stupid kids, acting very stupid.

And I get it, it's a tv teen drama, you have to generate conflict and drama between the main characters. But there are good ways to do that, and bad ways to do that. And unfortunately for me and my wife, the bad ways outweighed the good ways. So we are hoping it's a show, that just had a bad first season, and with subsequent seasons they will improve the writing. The actors are fine, I genuinely don't have any issues with them, they were acting their little hearts out being as genuine as they could with what they were given. Just, what they were given, was really lame.

Watching the old Adam West Batman, and apparently they had a character called Black Widow.

And the ep ends with criminals being stuck in experimental mind control machines to try to permanently alter their brains. You've jumped straight into sci-fi horror there.

It's very good. I like how BoJack is never idolized by the show for his cynical and destructive behaviour, like a certain other adult animated middle-aged man from a popular cartoon.

It's very good. I like how BoJack is never idolized by the show for his cynical and destructive behaviour, like a certain other adult animated middle-aged man from a popular cartoon.
It's kind of a testament to the show where Bojack can be a terrible, terrible person and yet be relatable enough to keep watching him. Though his self destructive cycles of "Realize he's shit, try to get better, make some progress, hit a barrier, backslide, get wasted, realize he's shit, repeat" can get irritating after a while.

Seeing his backstory, especially his family, does go a long way to engendering some sympathy, IMHO, because it's hard to see him ever coming out of that childhood being remotely well adjusted.
