correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't The Sun a tabloid type magazine? It is here in the States as far as I know, so anyone from UK want to confirm or deny it? I ask because at the bottom of the article is a link to the original article from The Sun for the UK.
Yes the Sun is a tabloid, but here is a more reliable source if you want it.

http://www.newscientist.com/article/dn14751-vatican-says-it-does-not-owe-darwin-an-apology.html
Er, how do you figure? That has nothing to do with this article, as far as I can see.
I might be missing something, it's 2 AM here, but.
Yeah I posted on the wrong thread because I'm retard and I didn't get any sleep last night. Happy now.
It happens. No, I am never happy.
Glad you two got that sorted out, because I had no bloody clue why he linked to that article!

Its odd news, but why bother commenting? Whats done is done, there is no changing it. Nothing you or I say here will change what has happened. Just leave it be.

Oh lord. The mind boggles. I'm surprised each family isn't suing the other for rape or something... unless the laws in the UK are differnet. I know in the US, if two people consent to sex, but are both underaged, technically, it's rape, and each family can be sued by the other. Is that how it works in the UK, or not?
Suing is more... how can I put this nicely... a US thing? Suing is alot more restricted outside of the US, they could however push charges, but considering neither is at the proper age to give consent, I don't really see it going anywhere, because while they both broke the law, they'd normally punish the one over 16(or 18, I don't know the legal age in the UK), and neither is, they might charge the older one, but who knows.
In any case they'd simply get a slap on the wrist, both being under 18 and all.
Over here, (New Zealand), Contraception is taught when pupils take the compulsory health classes at year 9, which is when they are about 13 years old, and just reaching puberty. A letter is sent home informing the parents what their students have been enrolled in, and permission is required if they are to continue in that class, or else they are sent to withdrawl for the entirety of the topic(not being punished, but simply to remove them from being taught that of which their parents do not want them to know yet). Hell in the Health - Sex Ed topic, they are taught how to put a condom on, and practice with a Banana! Doing it this way simply means that angry parents and/or places of religion can't do shit.

This isn't news. This is something chavs are commonly made fun of for doing. I know a guy who had to bring his two year old kid to school at age fourteen when the mother moved away, and was kicked out at age sixteen for banging a teacher.
Everyone talks about the need to teach more about contraception, but to tell the truth, it doesn't make one whit of difference. We knew all about that stuff at age twelve, but the guys and gals that were having sex were too drunk or stupid to care.

It's basically trash, but the story's true so meh.

Regardless I'm kinda ambivalent - obviously the parents of the teens are going to take care of the kid, but from the look of it they (the teens) are at least attempting to take responsibility. To the people that say what's a 13 year old doing having sex? Remember back to the teen years (and also remember puberty can happen as early as 11 or so), combine that with a similarly horny gf and a lack of education, just seeking pleasure...yeah.

A factor I don't see anyone going up on is the parts of the kids - what about them?

May be bad but I kinda had to lol (paraphrase) : when asked about how he was gonna take care of the kid he replied I don't get that much money, my dad gives me 10 (pounds) sometimes. Mixed bag. I know similarly aged kids (well 16) that're on their second child. (I heard it from his brother) apparently "the condom broke, both times"...riiight...and I'm reht reincarnation of the flying spaghetti monster. L2usecondom properly

Recently, a 13 year old British boy became a father to his 15 year old girlfriends baby. I won't say too much because the article isn't long, so I'll leave it up to you to read about it. I just want to know, is this one of the worst things that society has done to it's youth?

http://tinyurl.com/13yroldparent <--The Sun link
http://tinyurl.com/cejoy6 <--FoxNews link

Also, I think that the child should be taken from them, mainly because of this:
"When asked how he is going to cope financially, Alfie replied, bemused, 'What's financially?'"

EDIT: Added FoxNews link
The real shocker isn't that a 13 year old had a kid, its that it happened in Britian. To be honest though, you hear about this happening at least every month in Texas, Mississippi, or any of the southern U.S. states.

What amazes me is that people still consider this newsworthy.

I guess I could be sarcastic now and say, "HA! Look who's the hillbilly now *****!" or something like that.

Now the rednecks have the right to look on with smug superiority.

EDIT: After reading the Sun article, some anti-abortion activist commended the teenagers for having the "courage" to have a baby. Contratulations! You've just won the Gold Medal at the Missing The Point Olympics!

On a side note: At least there are no fertility problems in Britain.

ahem, post-birth abortio- no, i mean, im not sure how it is in the UK, but there is always adoption or foster care if the State [government?] were to intervene. seriously though, I think that they are way to young to properly care for a child, and it should be handed over to the proper authorities for disposal, or adpotion.....
Whatever you think, there is no point in debate here, we can do nothing but rant about the past here, no one here can change this situation.

Reading the article in the Sun and a quote from the boys Father, I can safely say I've identified the root of the problem.

And Dennis, 45, said:"He could have shrugged his shoulders and sat at home on his Playstation. But he has been at the hospital every day."
I can't help but think, that if he had some decent games to play, none of this would have happened.

You never hear of 12 year old X-Box owners getting girls up the duff.

I'd say that the UK needs Sex Ed...but I'd be a hypocrite. My own high school didn't have Sex Ed. I live in the Southern United States, one of the most religiously backwards places on Earth. When they tried to create a Sex Ed class, hyper-religious parental groups said no and protested until they killed the idea. Cocking Hell, our Science classes aren't even allowed to get into sexual reproduction, be it animal or human. Our schools want students to believe that, when you get married, you ask God for a baby and a stork delivers it to you...Because never once in all my years of school did a teacher ever talk about the concept of a penis, a vagina, and what they do. It was like all my schools honestly didn't want students to know about sex. Fuck, my high school even had a really strict stance on PDA. A teacher saw a guy and girl I was friends with hug and kiss each other on the cheek and they were both torn a new asshole, yelled at about how they shouldn't be doing that stuff at their age...They were 16...

And our community wonders why it is so shocking when there is a teen pregnancy. They don't teach us Sex Ed and they don't even fucking acknowledge the existence of sex in school. We all had to learn about sex ourselves, and I don't think I need to even mention why learning about sex by visiting porn sites is just plain terrible.

This isnt something new, I live in a fairly pov part of australia (full of housing trust and serial killers) and I know of atleast 3 people that had kids at ages from 12-15... it isnt that uncommon of a sight going into the shopping center and seeing lots of very very young people with kids.... I really have to move out of this place *sigh*

That is not even remotely shocking. It's fairly common over here, we have tyhe highest teenage pregnancy rates in Europe. We have 12 year olds having kids, I even recall one story of an 11 year old girl getting pregnant. If the age is in double figures, it's nothing shocking (slight case of hyperbole here, but only slight).

As Monkfish Acc says, this really isn't news.

Also, state intervention is very, very unlikely, unless there's a danger to the child then they are left with the mother.

Same goes for pressing charges and sueing. It just ain't gonna happen, what's the point?

Im happy I live in a place where sex ed is normal (and teen pregnancies are one of the lowest numbers in the world).
Though at the gae of 14 kids more gibbly about it...I remember making balloons out of the condoms (which is actually damn hard to do cause they are so slippery). There was also a little game we did which was quite fun (no, not a 'game', just a game). We all got a cup of water and a card describing a person, and we had to mingle and kinda 'act' like that person. Each time two persons had 'sex', we had to mix water from our cups (we had watery versions of 'orgies' then). Of course, one cup contained some kind of chemical, which would show when another chemical was added to all the cups, 75% turned purple, which was the indicator for 'aids'.
And the banana thing of course. That was actually something really useful I learned there.

I recall getting sex ed. Cringeworthy, frightening sex ed that put me off sex for all of....well, about three minutes. But still, I'm fairly sure they would have been given sex ed. Unless the United Kingdom has changed during the three years of my exile, the religious right has remarkably little power outside of the south, and sex ed is taught to everyone. This being a welfare state, the government sure as hell dosen't want to have more economically useless people lounging around and doing fuck-all.

But I'm afraid that shit like this happens. It's just the extreme end of the Bell curve, and the newspapers will always go for the extreme stories, and never mention that this is 2 people out of....how many million? It's an absurd percentage.

My class used a duct tape variation of that. The instructor made each student stick the piece of tape onto his or her arm, remove it, and pass it to the next person to do the same thing. By the end, the tape was covered with hair and dust.
The point the teacher was making was that when you have sex with someone, you're basically having "sex" with everyone they were ever involved with. I guess it was more of a virginity thing than an STD thing.

In "Romeo and Juliet", both were 14ish.

No big news here.

I don't recall the religious right having any power anywhere here. The CofE has a good few seats in the lords, but I'd describe CofE as the religious left.
