Which good RPG's came out last year?

For those not soured on the retro revival, the year spat out Pillars of Eternity and Hong Kong: Shadowrun, along with the enhanced editions for Wasteland 2 and Pillars of Eternity.
Ah yes, Wasteland 2 is one game I look forward to playing someday.

It will be a refreshing change from what I've been playing the last year or so.
Wasteland 2 is not a awesome game. My favourite of those sort of games is still Fallout 1, even though its short.

Wasteland 2 is more like Fallout 2 or for that matter Fallout 4 and NV. Nothing to see here. It's all been done before. Go in with average hopes

Did you just infer that Fallout 2 is not an awesome game?
Compared to the first one, yes. Somewhere between average and good
Oh come on. While I agree they both have their pros and cons, the advancements in Fallout 2,along with its issues, levels the games out perfectly. Both are beyond good, especially what I've heard some people constitute a "good" RPG today.

I don't know whether this counts as a spoiler but just in case...

I remember some of the criticism levelled at Fallout 3. Mainly it wasn't Fallout, like the supermutants, Brotherhood etc. were different from the originals. I dealt with this is Fallout 2. Those groups were NOT the same in the second game. If I remember correctly the former was more friendly and the latter less. I mean you (probably) destroyed The Master. Why isn't more mutants being aggressive because of that? Or for what the Enclave did?
For that matter the NCR evolved from Shady Sands. Shady, I'm in the tinniest town on the map Sands? And all the other towns pretty much die off? How does that make sense. (About as much as Fallout 3 not having much civilization, I'd say).
Or the agricultural guy is the one who can beat all the tech.

I think I'll stop there before I become frustrated
So mine problems (other than it clearly being a cash in sequel) is more to do with plot/ history

I think I understand. Most of or what I saw leveled at F3 was against it as an RPG.
Interesting question right? Is fallout 3 less of an RPG than Oblivion (Skyrim not being out at the time)? Also, after spending some time with Skyrim and Fallout 4 perks or skill trees, I maybe think they are better as they are now not a spreadsheet. But there are plenty who love spreadsheets (see EVE), so I understand why they change it.

Being able to roleplay through choices... I replayed fallout 1 and the Baulder's gates in 2013-15 to see this in action, and I don't know whether the old games had much choice or consequences either. The biggest one I've seen is Witcher 2. One of the worst I've seen is Ag Centre and Highpool in Wasteland 2. If your doing an open world (and not broken into episodes like Witcher 2) I don't think we have the capability to do it. Maybe the best we can hope for is the consequences of boss battle character choice like Tales for the Borderlands, but it doesn't matter who you choose there either.

I hope I'm following your comment correctly here7 but it's a common mistake I feel where people believe that the action of 'roleplaying' and the definition of a 'role playing game' are one and the same. Choice? F3 fails in my opinion. It stands out to me with the follow up New Vegas in which it flexes its superiority in incorporating moral ambiguity (something in which F2 also did better). But overall, this is a video game we are talking about and you can't just shrug off spreadsheets because there's some people who find it a bit too much to take in.

Since when was Doom a cult classic?
Hi longview. good to see you here.

Doom was classic among fanbase and revolutionized FPS genre. back then even FPS game were called Doom clones.
He's not saying he doesn't understand why Doom was a classic, he's asking why you're labeling it incorrectly as a cult classic.
A cult classic is considered by the majority of people to be something (such as a book, movie, or game in this case) to be highly enjoyed and respected by a specific, or even niche, group of people.

Doom isn't really a "cult" classic as it is popular in a very wide-spread community. You're right, Doom was very influential with many people, and even those who don't like first person shooters would consider it important to gaming, which is why calling it a cult classic can be seen as wrong.

So your saying that a defining attribute of RPG is spreadsheets. That's cool. I'll try the one that aren't, to see if they do it better.

I remember moral ambiguity in FO3 like the railroad/institute storyline in Rivet City, but New Vegas had more. Vegas (and Dragon age Origin) gave you a slideshow at the end which literally makes you feel like you made a difference (which would have made Witcher 3 so much better by the way) which is the best thing about the whole game.

My interpretation of choice is where you logically react to a situation (for different groups), and there are repercussions. I.e. do a quest, get a reward. For example, I've never felt I could roll play in a game. My attitude to questgivers and merchants are I be nice to you so I can get a quest. Not I'm a nice or bad person. That's irrelevant.

Also, lets take the example of the vault in new vegas that had its reactor going nuclear. I could choose to save the crops for the sharecoppers or save the vault dwellers. Let's say I made a choice for the vault dwellers. I would have like to go to the sharecropper and TRY TO FIX THE SITUATION. Maybe help them move or something. This is not a New Vegas thing, its rampant in most of these game. Like let's win the Civil War in Skyrim instead of tricking both groups into fighting the Aldermi, tricking the Aldermi into attacking the Nords so the opposing forces would maybe united on a common foe. I.e. something like In the Pale Moonlight from DS9.

As for roleplaying, I don't know what people think is roleplaying but I get the idea that there is a huge range of interpretation and that's what we fight over

[a really good list]

Ooh. That's a good one, too. Unfortunately I don't think it's quite a contender against the absolute bevy of amazing titles, across nearly every genre, that dropped in '98. Hell, ONE DAY (Nov 30th) saw the release of four utterly phenomenal titles that shaped the landscape of gaming for decades to come.

You are hyping up games that are not even out yet...why? Hyped up games turn out to be mediocre constantly, why would you think its good to set yourself up for disappointment?

2007 was indeed one of the greatest year ever. STALKER and Crysis 1 alone make that year Golden.
With this I will agree 100%
You can add a diamond that is the Orange box to that gold pile.

I didn't check out the Wikipedia list but the titles you mentioned, the only world that comes to mind is a resounding "meh".
