Rumor: Hitman Dev Axes Staff, Kills Project [UPDATED]

Sources suggest that Hitman 5 may have been bumped off before it was even formally announced.

According to rumors, Hitman developer IO Interactive has been forced to lay off a number of staff members, and cancel a project it was working on. The rumor seems to have started on the Twitter [http://twitter.com/#!/georgeb3dr] account of 3D Realms co-owner George Broussard.

Broussard wrote [http://twitter.com/#!/georgeb3dr/status/29116265528] "Layoffs at Io Interactive (Kane&Lynch/Hitman). As many as 35, and a project cancelled. - Tis' the season," likely referring to the recent news of "seasonal layoffs" at EA. Broussard makes no mention of where he heard this information and doesn't say anything else about it, and doesn't expand on his statement at all. If the rumors are true, it will be the second time [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/99584-Lay-Offs-Confirmed-for-Hitman-Developer] that IO has had to let staff go this year. Back in March, certain "organizational changes" forced the studio to shed an unspecified number of staff members. Around a month later, Square Enix Europe boss Phil Rogers said [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/100077-Square-Enix-Europe-Boss-Talks-About-Closures] that the cuts had been part of cost-cutting measures, and while there wasn't anything on the horizon at that time, he couldn't rule out further cuts in the future.

Also troubling is Broussard's suggestion that a project had been cancelled, as the only project that IO was thought to be currently working on was Hitman 5 [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/91628-New-Hitman-Game-In-Development]. IO recently downplayed [http://twitter.com/#!/IOInteractive/status/28668341925] comments from Hitman voice actor David Bateson, who provides the voice for lead character Agent 47, who suggested that a sequel was on the way, but it's not entirely clear why. It could be because the project has been cancelled, but it's also possible it never existed, or that IO just wanted to keep a tighter grip on when and how information about it gets out.

Of course, without official confirmation, all we can do is speculate. We've contacted IO for comment and will update if/when the studio gets back to us.

UPDATE: IO has just confirmed the layoffs to Kotaku [http://kotaku.com/5677380/kane--lynch-hitman-dev-hit-with-layoffs?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed:+kotaku/full+(Kotaku)], again claiming that are an unfortunate side effect of recent internal re-organization. It's thought that slow sales of Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days, and other, earlier titles, is to blame. IO has yet to comment on the rumor that a project has been cancelled.

Hitman 5? Oh, please, don't let this be true?

Anything but cancelling Hitman 5.

Sorry for the very talented studio, and all, but, not Hitman 5.

Damnit- The Puzzle Murder Genre is my favourite! Hitman is something unique out there, a game about planning as much as it is about stealth and reaction. They have a good sense of humour and real feel of "I'm a killing machine".

I might be jumping to conclusions, but I blame Kane and Lynch.

If this is true then IO has serious explaining to do as to why they cancelled Hitman 5 yet let Kane and Lynch 2 get the green light.

I guess they need more time and money to spend on making more Kane & Lynch and therefore ensuring that there souls get to stay in hell forever.

Let's just hope this is a rumor, more for the poor people who worked there than a FREAKIN SEQUAL

But... that's me. And yet here i'd get pissed if Deadspace 2 got axed. ~shrugs~

If IO want to get back on their feet... make another Hitman game! It's a guaranteed success.

I read this title as "Hitman Dev Kills Staff, Axes Project."

Unfortunately, I've never played a Hitman game, but I'm sure for a Hitman fan this would be sad news.

It's not Hitman 5. It was something entirely different they were doing together with Microsoft, which was canceled and therefore they had to let the people go, who are working on that unannounced project.

Oh for the love of all that's holy, please let this be false.
God, I've never asked you for anything except a cure for cancer and ignorance. Forget those, make Hitman 5 happen, don't let it die.

If IO axe Hitman, after the appalling Kane & Lynch games, they'll have lost their most successful and well known franchises. I hope it isnt true. I really want to see Hitman 5.

Oh heck no, the Hitman series was far too successful (as a whole, not each game individually; look at Contracts =/) and too unique of a game idea to be just canceled. Come on, name one game where you could
- feed poisonous donuts to the feds,
- slit a gardener's throat with his own shears,
- dispose of bodies in a dumpster truck,
- snipe a dog from a treehouse with a tranquilizer gun,
- cause a human barbecue,
- AND shoot a drug dealer with a .480 cal in the face.
and all that in THE SAME MISSION.
F''king unique I tell you.

This is a shame if they did axe Hitman 5. It was one of few games series I enjoyed. The plots tended to be a bit confusing, but they were still a fun play. Perhaps another studio will pick it up and continue to run with it.
