Nintendo Exec Asks That Disappointed Metroid Fans "Trust Us"

Nintendo's President addressed fan disappointment with Metroid Prime: Federation Force, asks fans to "trust us."

Nintendo of America President and COO Reggie Fils-Aime discussed the backlash against Metroid Prime: Federation Force with Mashable [http://mashable.com/2015/06/30/nintendo-e3-reggie-fils-amie-metroid/], saying the company needs to reinvent franchises in order to keep them moving forward.

"We're taking our great IP and transforming them and making them new again - making them fresh and appealing for the fan who feels they know the franchise. But we're giving them new things to enjoy," Fils-Amie said.

Fils-Aime acknowledged that fans were disappointed not to see a traditional Metroid Prime game, but that the company believed it had to focus on reinventing older franchises in order to keep them from becoming stale. He also indicates that those who are disappointed with the title may feel differently after actually playing it.

"What the fan at home saw was something in the Metroid Prime universe that they weren't expecting. The reaction has been negative. There's no sugar coating it," Fils-Aime said. "This is an example where fans who aren't able to get their hands on the game may be at a bit of a competitive disadvantage. Everyone who has played what we are showing regarding Metroid Prime, they've come across really pleased. My ask is that fans trust us."

Metroid Prime: Federation Force is scheduled for release in 2016.

Trust is something you have to earn, Nintendo has done little to garner that with the Metroid franchise lately.

Something of a tangent, but how exactly does one pronounce "Fils-Aime"?

This is not "reinventing the franchise" Reggie. The original Metroid Prime games, those were reinventing the franchise. This is making a different franchise and slapping the Metroid name on it.

Though not even a buyer of anything Nintendo for a while, I do weirdly trust them. An outside perspective shows that Nintendo are a unique creature, with flaws as any other. But they seem to enjoy surprising when choosing one of their rare moments to communicate with humans. Their detatchment, in many ways is, a blessing for this increasingly touchy industry.

Captch: swirling vortex of entropy. ...Orrr that?

My issue isn't that it doesn't have Samus, or even that it doesn't resemble a Metroid game. My issue is that it does resemble a Metroid game, Metroid Prime Hunters, and that game was garbage. Reinventing a franchise is fine, but don't use it as an opportunity to repeat past mistakes.

This is kinda sad nintendo. You know that one of the biggest complain leveled at you is that you never make new IP right? So here, you're essentially making a new IP except you're not. Instead you put yourself in a lose-lose scenario where you're not making a new IP and you're screwing up an old IP (who's last title was also a massive disappointment). So, no, you do not deserve any trust.

"<Fils-Aime> believed it had to focus on reinventing older franchises in order to keep them from becoming stale."

Umm.. You what mate? Nintendo have been remaking the same games for the past 3 decades. Legend of Zelda? Super Mario? Mario Kart, Smash Bros., Pikmin, Donkey Kong, etc.?

Don't get me wrong, I enjoy Nintendo's games as much as the next person, but to say that they are "reinventing" their franchises each time is blatantly untrue.

my only thought on this game is that it should have been an extra mode in Splatoon not part of the Metroid universe

as for trust... well I'll give you the benefit of the doubt seeing as Nintendo doesn't use E3 to reveal big new titles and instead relies on it's digital events to make big announcements. So I imagine something else will be revealed a some point in the future

Actually, when you mention Super Mario followed by Mario Kart, that's actually a pretty decent example of reinvention, where you take an established setting but then make a completely different type of game than what everyone had seen earlier (I'm talking about the first Mario Kart here, not the franchise it itself went on to become). Likewise, Zelda not too long ago gave us Hyrule Warriors, which while just being a Dynasty Warriors game gameplay wise is still a completely different beast than any Zelda game that came before. The original Donkey Kong games are nothing like the Donkey Kong Country games.

Reggie didn't say that they reinvent their franchises each time, only that it's a thing they do sometimes, which actually is true, albeit rare.

My problem isn't so much that Federation Force exists, so much as it's not what I want. It's fine if that's the game they want to make, but I'd prefer greatly if I didn't have to wait a decade for a more traditional Metroid experience, since that's one of their franchises that hasn't been run into the ground yet.

Whatever, just wash your hands.
This actually looks kinda cool. I sort of wish it wasn't called metroid, but it always annoys me when devs think they can't have multiple games taking place in the same universe unless the same character is the star.

After the farcical disaster that was Metroid: Other M, you don't get any trust on this subject Nintendo. Not before you've proven you can actually deliver a proper Metroid game(be it a proper Prime type or preferably a proper 2D one ala Super M, Fusion and Zero Mission).
Oh, get over yourself, Other M was by a completely different developer altogether, and the guy who primarily screwed things up isn't even involved this time. This is Next Level Games, the guys behind Punch-Out!! Wii and Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon. They're not Retro, but they've shown what they can do with a 3DS. Besides, the Treehouse Live playthrough painted a much better image of the game than the Direct trailer.

I was angry at first, too, saying this didn't deserve the "Prime" subtitle, but after seeing this [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vBu5haRZ9A8], I feel more reassured. Plus, they've stated that the story in this game is meant to be a setup for a proper Prime 4 in the future, which is possibly what Retro's working on.

Yes, we were all disappointed by E3, but have a little faith.

I should get a 3DS so I can support Nintendo doing more stuff like this in the future.

What does this have to do with Splatoon? You do know that the soccer game isn't the entire game, don't you?

What does this have to donope, I thought all it was was just playing soccer in a Metroid universe with Splatoon? You do know that the soccer game isn't the entire game, don't you?
nope I thought the whole thing was just Metroid's version of a soccer league game. So is this like that horrible Metroid Prime for the DS? That's even worse

That is pronouncing his name correctly, but the spelling is wrong. Everybody keeps leaving off the accent that is supposed to appear over the "e" like this: "Aimé". See the accent? WITHOUT the accent it is pronounced "Fees-Am".

That accent mark is VERY IMPORTANT because it changes this particular word from being a verb the simple present tense (in the first person singular) "Aime", to the past participle (congugated in the masculine) "Aimé" - or even as an adjective. Without the accent the word is pronounced differently and is contextualized in a different tense.

His family name is French and means, "Son that is loved". Fils = son. Aimé = loved. So spell it like this - "Fils-Aimé" and you've got your correct pronunciation.

Basically.

Blind faith in companies leads to crappy games. Nintendo gets my money when their games look good and only then. But the nerve to ask that when the last Metroid with Other M? Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo.

It's a proper name. They get corrupted with time. The spelling isn't wrong for the pronunciation, as it's not spelling the word.

Oh you whacky Europeans, putting little hats on all your letters.

I don't even know how to type an accent on my 'e'.
