Nintendo Exec Asks That Disappointed Metroid Fans "Trust Us"

As much as I would like a new Metroid starring Samus (still holding out for a followup to Fusion), I do want to try and look at the glass hald full here. Getting to play as the Galactic Federation could allow for further world building. Getting to see how the Metroid universe functions outside of Samus and her escapades could be breath of fresh air. It could also lead to new discoveries that could have an impact on future titles, including ones that have Samus.

....Or they could completely ignore any world building, at which point I would be more disappointing that they dropped a perfectly good chance to do so.

Nintendo? We're not disappointed that you made a spinoff game. We're disappointed that you elected to do so for a franchise that hasn't had a new proper iteration in eight years (damn right I'm ignoring Other M).
Why? Because Other M has a dumb story and bad characterization of Samus? Because those are really the game's only major flaws. Everything else is fun, and it's essentially Super Metroid 2. That said, I think Federation Force should have been it's own IP.

Yeah Nintendo, wonderful. So glad I bought a Wii-U.
I do wonder how the NX will sell. Nintendo has a shit sense of timing. Throwing a new console into the wild just when Xbone and PS4 are hopefully going to be heating up with some releases, probably can't be good.

Not so much that, it's this idea of 'Buy our new console; The Wii-U. You'll love it. *three years later* Buy our actual new console: The NX. You'll love it this time.'

I know the Wii-U sold and still is selling like shit, but there's still a good couple of million people out there who bought one, like me. For Nintendo to just turn their backs on them is a sure way to break down that trust. If this is an actual new powerful console that plays games the Wii-U can't, so soon after the Wii-U launched, then fuck them, and I hope it fails spectacularly!

I'm looking forward to this game. It's cute and adorable and I feel exactly what the franchise needed.

After the farcical disaster that was Metroid: Other M, you don't get any trust on this subject Nintendo. Not before you've proven you can actually deliver a proper Metroid game(be it a proper Prime type or preferably a proper 2D one ala Super M, Fusion and Zero Mission).
Oh, get over yourself, Other M was by a completely different developer altogether, and the guy who primarily screwed things up isn't even involved this time. This is Next Level Games, the guys behind Punch-Out!! Wii and Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon. They're not Retro, but they've shown what they can do with a 3DS. Besides, the Treehouse Live playthrough painted a much better image of the game than the Direct trailer.

I was angry at first, too, saying this didn't deserve the "Prime" subtitle, but after seeing this [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vBu5haRZ9A8], I feel more reassured. Plus, they've stated that the story in this game is meant to be a setup for a proper Prime 4 in the future, which is possibly what Retro's working on.

Yes, we were all disappointed by E3, but have a little faith.
Like Nintendo did not approve Other M or something? They greenlighted it, and they were supposed to curate it.

You mean... 30 something grown ups threw a tantrum over a game they haven't even played?

*gasp!* I'm flabbergasted!

Well, if they didn't add 'Metroid Prime' in the title, the backlash might've been alot less.
But yeah, I'm not happy how they are handling this franshise, specially after the mess that was Other M.

This reminds me when the first Metroid Prime was released. I liked it a lot, but my friend didn't even try it because they made Metroid another fucking First-person shooter.

just no. If you want to do something like this go for it, after you give us a good Metroid prime game hell just a 3ds port of the prime trilogy and id be ok with you branching out a bit. It is never a good idea to follow a failure like Metroid other M with a new spinoff game.

This actually looks kinda cool. I sort of wish it wasn't called metroid, but it always annoys me when devs think they can't have multiple games taking place in the same universe unless the same character is the star.
I'll agree with you but with a caveat that fans also need to allow for multiple games with different protagonists. Also that it looks neat but isn't necessarily my view of what a non-Samus based Metroid title should be. I'd love to see a different perspective on the Metroid universe, from a different character's POV because it would only make sense that Samus isn't the only interesting person in a galaxy with space travel and space pirates.
I'm hoping that Ninty finds the same idea, that one can have a non-Samus Metroid game that has a storyline and resembles the Prime titles... I don't distrust Nintendo, but I also don't fully trust any game developer.

But nobody's going to BUY it Reggie! The niche for a loosely-themed portable co-op only shooting gallery plus soccer game and the Metroid fanbase don't overlap!

Because those are really the game's only major flaws. Everything else is fun, and it's essentially Super Metroid 2.
Really? So a bare bones game where you have to stand still to fire missiles is fun? Pixel hunts are fun? Lack of exploration, no atmosphere. Concentration mode removes all incentive to look for upgrades. Super Metroid had an amazing OST, Other M does not. And last but not least, fuck Little Birdie and that awful version of Nightmare.

Once again, Nintendo has no idea what their few remaining customers want.

Metroid fans are hungry for a new game. It's been too long since the last game. But what does Nintendo do? Not only do they NOT have a new game in development, but they slap the Metroid logo on some half-assed looking 3DS co-op title.

Nintendo would have been better off just making this a new IP. God knows it would have been better received.

Bare bones? A game where you can effortlessly switch between first and third person, explore quite well, and in general enjoy a more super metroid/fusion esque experience is bare bones? Now, I'll agree that the missile system was flawed, that the story was meh, and could've used a year to be polished further, but other m was a great game. I've played them all, super as my first, and the only reason people truly flipped out was because Samus wasn't the terminator or emotionless save for a few times when she might stare at something and look away.

Issue with Ridley? PTSD, which never just goes away even if you confront the source. Yes, she's fought Ridley time and time again, but she blew him into paste in super to avoid seeing him again. Coming back triggered her ptsd, which she quickly got over and properly kicked his butt. She wasn't snivveling in a corner for an hour, she froze and was vulnerable for a moment. Throughout the game, outside of the issues with Adam (that could've been better executed, I can't excuse that), she was portrayed as a strong bounty hunter who was somewhat different from her fellow humans due to being raised by literal chicken people in space. She couldn't emphathize like they could, but had her emotional moments when the time came.

The missile issue, the issue with Adam, the varia suit moment, I can agree that they were flawed and quite stupid. But the game had good exploration, a wonderful atmosphere aided by a terrific ost, and the boss fights were generally quite awesome. Concentration mode I'm neutral on, but other m was released five years ago. Let go of the hate and try to approach it from a non biased standpoint.

I have no interest in the game.

The title of the game irritates me because it has the word Prime in it, and Reggie refers to it as the Metroid PRIME universe.

Did they forget that Metroid it the name of the series? Unless this is going to shoehorn in that remnants of planet Phaaze are landing all over the galaxy and causing trouble that requires the Marines to train etc. then sure its related to Metroid Prime.

If its just a blatant marketing ploy to get us to forget Other M and think its a return to the most recent commonly liked titles in the series then there you have everyone's problem.

Plus the art assets revealed so far are almost universally panned.

Unlike Wind Waker, which is a matter of taste, this game doesn't really appeal to anyone's idea of Metroid it seems.

I played Hunters back in the day all the way to the end, but I didn't end up buying it because I hated it and it controlled like ass. I finished it because I loved the franchise, same with Other M.

I guess we should just trust them I guess, right?

Even if the game is awesome, its still not a new Metroid Game in the style people want.

When you released the original Metroid Prime, you also released Fusion for all the people that crapped themselves at the idea of 3D. It worked out great for everyone.

So where are you hiding the real Metroid game this time?

Not going to lie, I want a new Samus based Metroid title. But this could be fun, I don't see the problem with a spin off, lots of franchises do it.

We don't know what it is, we'll just have to wait, for all we know it's the replacement for the 3DS which has been out for some time.

Besides, they're announcing it next year, I doubt it would be out soon after the announcement. That said, being a Wii-U owner myself, I hope it gets continued support for a few more years myself. We just have to wait and see. If it is the next home console, hopefully it will be backwards compatible. That would help a bit and their last couple of machines were, so they could find a way to do it here too.

No. Because the last one you made. Was 'Other M'.

So trust is used up, you have to build trust again.

What exactly has Nintendo done in the last 10 years to deserve trust?

Yeah, that's what I thought.

Although this game doesn't seem to have anything in it that people look for in a metroid game, like Samus or exploration, it's the co-op focus that's turning me off the game.

I get that lots of games are featuring co-op now, but I'm still of the opinion that games should stand up on single-player primarily, because I play a lot of games years after they came out, when they're cheap and not many people are playing them.

Then again, maybe this sort of thing makes more sense in Japan, where way more people own 3DSs and are enthusiastic for this sort of art style.

Anyway, they'll probably get onto a proper metroid game at some point. Here's hoping anyway; might even coax me into playing my 3DS again.
