The Madden Curse Strikes Again

The infamous Madden Curse has struck again, sending cover athlete Troy Polamalu of the Pittsburgh Steelers to the inactive list for three to six weeks with an injured knee ligament.

When will these NFL players learn that what money and minimal fame they might earn from being on the cover of Madden NFL isn't worth the cost? Would you really put your body at the risk of serious bodily harm courtesy of the Madden Curse simply for tons and tons of cash? I suppose that's something you say yes to simply by deciding to be a professional football player, so I guess it's not that big of a leap.

Or maybe some NFL players think they can dodge the Madden Curse, the superstition that states that anyone on the cover of a Madden game will suffer some kind of injury or misfortune which will send their careers into a downward spiral. It has happened before, and it happened just now: one of the two players on this year's edition of the game, Troy Polamalu of the Steelers, just injured a ligament in his left knee and will thus be forced onto the sidelines for three to six weeks.

Doesn't sound that bad? Just wait. He'll miss all six weeks and his stats will drop like crazy, everybody will forget about him, and he'll lose his sponsorship deal with Campbell's Chunky Soup. And let's not forget that there's another guy on the cover - Cardinals receiver Larry Fitzgerald - who needs to get his share of the Curse as well. I would just quit while I'm ahead if I were that guy.

What was the last cover-star on Madden injured?
It was Brett Favre, remember? I guess he wasn't injured, but that whole "comeback" thing didn't go to well as far as I can remember.

To be honest, i think they deserve it, but thats mostly cause i hate sports stars in general. something is profoundly wrong with getting enough money to feed a small town worth of homeless for chasing after bound pieces of leather or cloth, or hitting them with various objects.

Here's hoping the madden curse stays strong for years to come, hopefully until these people stop posing for it and the game falls into obscurity like any game that is basically a rehash of the same game you bought a year ago should.

Well, his whole shoulder thing came up on the comeback. Sucks to hear that the curse is still in effect.

Oh god i was watching this game last night and i thought the same thing, if i were Fitzgeralnd i wouldnt play this season. They should just start putting retired players on the cover. Keane you got a football team? Cos i remember i took you down with my lakers some time back.
I don't really watch football, though I guess I'm a Niners guy by default. Also the Lakers are garbage.

wasn't this curse debunked a while ago as a load of crap?
I think the idea is that it's not so much a curse as it is just what happens - people playing pro football do tend to get injured one way or another, regardless of whether they're on a game cover or not.

But I believe in the Curse.

Snopes on the Madden Curse. It's kinda uncanny, even if it is just superstition.

http://www.snopes.com/sports/football/maddencurse.asp

2000 - Sanders/Levens - Sanders retired, Levens suffered an injury and was cut in 2001.
2001 - Eddie George - Hampered by injuries and suffered from an all time low in yards
2002 - Dante Culpeper - Knee injury, missed the final 5 games of the year and was never the same again.
2003 - Marshal Faulk - Suffered an ankle injury and dropped below 1000 all purpose yards for the first time in 3 years.
2004 - Mike Vick - Fractured Fibula the day after the game came out.
2005 - Ray Lewis - Torn Hamstring
2006 - McNabb - Sports Hernia in first game of the season. Opted for surgery after playing with pain to miss final 7 games.
2007 - Shawn Alexander - Broke his left foot 3 weeks into the season.
2008 - Vince Young - Got off light because he was a rookie. Only missed one game, but it was the first time in his carrier he missed a game due to injury.

It's an interesting thing.

Woo my titans lost but we took out their top defensive player and nailed Big Ben a few good times. ... If only we hadn't of gone to the 3 man rush...
