I love skewed numbers. 30 Mio is LOL. How many are actually "in use"? Not even 1% for sure as any sane player uses Steam-Remover cracks to get rid of this pest called steam sticking to your legit applications. But this created account count idiocy is done at a lot of places. Important is not the number of "created" accounts but the number of actually "used" accounts... and the number of pissed off customers.
take a look here: http://store.steampowered.com/stats/ and you will have your answer of how many people do actually log in. As of right...... now! there are over 2,500,000 people online (insert over 9000 joke here) so a lot more than 1% are active. That is almost 30% and its a freaking monday morning.

OT: Good for them. I'll stick with GFWL for now.

Cmon Valve destroy Microsoft and there shitty gfwl. Microsoft recently stated they would support the pc but they just announced exclusive xbox 360 fallout: new vegas dlc.
Maybe they're annoyed because New Vegas is not using GFWL?

Almost everyone I know has multiple steam accounts for some reason or another. This number does not impress.
Why would anyone need multiple Steam accounts, so you can gift a game to yourself?

This post is filled with amusement. "30 million is LOL. How many are actually 'in use'? Not even 1% for sure..."

Let's see...1% of 30 million is 300,000 users. On average, I see 1.5-2.5 million users on Steam on a daily basis, and Valve announced in the article that they had 6 million unique users accessing it in a single day. Assuming that said 6 million are the ONLY ones with "in use" accounts (a flimsy assumption at that), we're looking at something around..oh..20%? And that's being conservative.

Logic: It's a wonderful thing.

Now how about they fix all the little problems Steam has had for ages? Like an offline mode that needs to connect to the internet to start offline.
Never had that issue...I can turn on my laptop in the middle of a desert, far from the internet, and start playing Sam & Max with no problem.
Its the opposite for me.

If I try to start up without an internet in offline mode it gives me a big fat "CONNECT TO INTERNET TO COMPLETE PROCESS".

And that usually ends with me raging.

I don't know what to think of this. On one hand, i use Steam, i like the sales, etcetera etcetera. But on the other, it seems to become a bit of a monopoly over time (even if due to great service), and monopolies are never good. And i don't really hope that Valve will stay on the straight-and-narrow if they completely overtake the market.

It's still better than GFWL, mind you.

I agree. Steam is doing well but the number that impresses is the 6 million in one day number.

For those talking about competition with Steam I would say D2D, Impulse and to a much lesser extent GoG are there real competition. The PC games areas in stores is noticeably smaller then it was even 3 years ago and that is only going to continue.

Glad to see steam isn't going by the wayside anytime soon! Personally, I don't think there could -be- the PC gaming I love anymore without it. Its become a pillar of the industry.

I want this to be a joke, I know this should be a joke, and yet there's something nagging me and saying that perhaps it is not a joke.

Activate offline mode once while you are online. Then offline mode should work consistently so long as you don't buy a game or Steam doesn't receive an update.
