Halo: Reach Makes $200 Million on First Day

Halo: Reach's success proves the industry is in a healthy state, says Microsoft exec.

Bungie's final Halo game before it ships out to work with Activision has come out of the gate strong. According to Microsoft Game Studios vice president Phil Spencer, Reach [http://www.amazon.com/Halo-Reach-Xbox-360/dp/B002BSA20M/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1284632856&sr=8-1-spell] made $200 million dollars in its first 24 hours, making it the biggest entertainment launch of the year.

Spencer blamed the industry slowdown on a lack of blockbuster titles over the last year, and said that Reach's numbers proved that gamers were still willing to spend their money for games they really wanted. He said that Reach had already surpassed Halo 3 in terms of online players and would drive hardware sales.

"We feel really good about where the Halo: Reach numbers are," he said, What [they] tell me is [that] gamers are there. They are willing to buy the great experiences when they come out. In fact, that we are exceeding Halo 3 numbers out of the gate tells me that the industry is in a healthy state."

Of course, with Spencer calling Reach the biggest launch of the year, comparisons to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 record-breaking release last year are inevitable. If figures reported [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/96054-Did-Modern-Warfare-2-Sell-7-Million-Copies-in-One-Day] at the time are to be believed, MW2 sold around 7 million copies on its first day, which is more than $400 million dollars in revenue, assuming a cost of $60 per copy. Clearly, Reach hasn't snatched the record, but first day sales aren't everything, and Reach will undoubtedly continue to sell well for a considerable length of time.

To be fair, MW2 was released on 3 consoles, Reach only on 1. $200 Million isnt bad for an exclusive.

I don't want to crush their moment or anything, but when Cataclysm is released soon, won't that break the record? I don't remember, but both Burning Crusade and Wotlk set new first day records, didn't it?

Well, there's also the fact that MW2 was multi-platform as well, which would explain thw much higher sales revenue at least somewhat.

But this doesn't surprise me. Reach seems like it's a pretty good game so far, and anything Halo is going to see well on some level at least.

Well yeah but world of warcraft is in it's own league with 11+ million subscribers world wide, it's not really comparable.

Seriously, even if it was utter tosh, that number of people would have bought it. What's this got to do with anything other than the PR industry?

Great experiences? How could they have known that before they bought it? People were going to buy this in droves like they would the next Twilight or Harry Potter book, and then defend it to the hilt.

Regardless of how good it actually is.

Modern Warfare 2 didn't make $400 million in it's first day, primarily because most retailers were selling it at less than half the $60 recommended retail price.

It would be interesting to know if this is the actual figure, based on the numbers and the price they were sold for, or if it's this figure based purely on numbers and assuming all sales at full price. Although it seems more likely, I haven't seen the full scale price war centred on Reach that MW2 had.

exactly what I was thinking, It might be an idea to get the MW2 xbox 360 sales and compare just them. I mean $200 million from a single console is incredible surely.

Was that just the hype making it sell or is the game actually good? I've seen 4 copies already on the pre-owned shelf in gamestation today.

I decided to play the game when I was playing the Beta. I knew that it could only get better as they improved on things and added new maps. So I expected/ got a great experience.

what? i dont know any retailer that was selling MW2 for less than half of recommended retail price, tops was like 5dollars, and its still not down to half price, last i saw it was still around $55. Which places were selling it for $30 on day one? because i should buy my games from them.

See kids? You can run a company and be an idiot. Rach will not drive hardware sales. Reach was so anticipated and wanted because people who already owned XBOXs and played the first 3 Halos as well as Halo wars and ODST. People who have never experianced Halo or only experianced it in passing and have no real "connection" to the game aren't going to rush out to buy your system JUST to play this one game
