Actually, it's still impressive. China doesn't even have WotLK yet, and they won't have Cataclysm at launch either. In other words, the impressive launch numbers for BC and Wrath were excluding China!
Wait, why won't china allow the new expansion packs?

So the target audience for Wow expansions is based on 11 million players, while the target audience for Halo Reach is the 40 million consoles installed worldwide ?

It is comparable, specially since Halo 3 did sell 11 million by itself, so even Halo fans for target audience, it's still a similar number.
The thing is though once someone has bought halo reach that's it, a maximum of £39.99~ has been spent on the game whereas for world of warcraft there are 2 (soon to be 3) expansion packs which each increase the money spent on the game and then you factor in £9.00~ a month from every player for subscriptions and other in-game requests like name or server changing and world of warcraft makes a lot more money.

Well it's a solid title. I spent 15 hours over the last 3 days completing the campaign on legendary (loved the epilogue btw) and there's still so much more stuff that I want to do (I haven't even touched Forge World yet). No doubt the sales are down to popularity of the brand but a lot of work's gone into the game and I think that Bungie deserves their success.

There's a number of potential reasons, though I doubt anyone but the Chinese government knows the whole story.

- Cultural differences: Chinese media aren't allowed to depict skeletons without flesh - you can imagine how far this set back an expansion centered around undead; (even the Death Knight class was considered problematic by the government.
- Additional programming: Chinese WoW clients are modified to only allow players to play for 5 hours per day by mandate of the government - playing longer will severely reduce, and eventually eliminate, all XP and gold rewards your characters receive;
- Translation: There's the not-so-simple matter of translating thousands of lines of quest text, dialogue etc. to Chinese.

Burning Crusade's Chinese launch was in September 2007, almost 9 months after it launched in the U.S. Wrath still hasn't launched there, and it's been out for almost two years at this point.

]Everybody who bought this is a fucking idiot.
You know, a long time ago posts like this would actually have bothered me. Not so much anymore.

See I've realized looking at how much I'm enjoying Reach coupled by how well it's doing in sales that no matter how many people complain and ***** about it, the game still sells and the industry keeps moving forward. All people like you two are ultimately doing is not coming across as enlightened or elitist or intellectual, just kind of prickish.

So I guess if you want to dedicate periods of your time to insulting and bitching and whining about the popularity of a video game, more power to ya but it's not going to stop the game from being successful, nor is it going to stop Halo: Reach from being a fun experience for me and my friends and people around the world.
And if you, like so many others seem to, think that by complaining and demonstrating a hate for games like this, that a revolution is going to occur and make all developers rise up against the machine and create great timeless amazing games and finally free ourselves of the tyranny of mediocrity... I hate to have to be the one to say, that's not going to happen.

The game industry as it stands will always have a balance of franchises, indie produced games and the occasional new IP. That's just how it is, and frankly a lot of people need to learn to accept this fact. Halo is not causing a downfall in game design, new ideas for gameplay innovation still get made and new artistic games continue to grace the eyes and ears of players around the world.
But often it is the money made by popular franchises that keep the ball spinning and allow the industry to keep moving forward. It's a perfectly good system and it works just fine. So there is no reason to complain, because as I said before, complaining does nothing to prevent Halo: Reach from existing and being obnoxious or rude only serves the singular achievement of coming across as a dick.

So essentially what I'm saying is I no longer have any kind of grudge against people who feel the need to hate on things that are popular and be pricks about it, because at least I'm enjoying myself and playing games I like. That's something no one can prevent from happening. So if you don't mind, I'm going to play my Halo: Reach and if that makes me a sheep then at least I'm a happy sheep, and if being part of the 'cool crowd' means having to insult people for playing games that they like then frankly feel free to call me a 'loser' or an 'idiot' or whatever you feel like labeling me as.
There's no reason for me to act like I am enlightened or intellectual, because none of these words have any bearing on the Halo series, unless paired with the words "Halo is not.."

And if you think I posted what I did because I wanted to stop it somehow, you're dumber than you make me out to be. I posted my opinion and you don't agree with it. You're attacking me for it. Also, loser and idiot. There. You asked me to.
YOU are in no postion to talk about people attacking you for your opinion when you're very first post on the thread was "everybody who bought this is a fucking idiot".
That is insulting everybody who bought the game's opinion. you should have posted along the lines of "i haven't really liked any of the halos after 2"
or not have posted here at all.

I like the game, but it definatly has issues and people who constantly play the story mode on legendary, or play online day and night are usaully rabid fanboys.
It still suffers from a somewhat bad community, but its pretty fun i guess.
And also Bungie, go fuck yourself for still not adding the ability to join a matchmaking game when theres open slots, countless times people leave while a match is in progress and nobody can join it.
