Great experiences? How could they have known that before they bought it?
Between the multiplayer beta and the video preview of Forge World, it was pretty much guaranteed to be awesome.

Also, franchises usually keep some core mechanics throughout the years, so people who enjoyed the past games would expect a certain level of quality.

I think this is a sign of how people felt burned after ODST. It would be selling better were it not for ODST giving people a bad taste in their mouth... and having another non-standardly named game, i.e. Halo 4.

So a record amount of people bought it because they didn't like the last one?

I very higly doubt WoW will simply empty. I don't think players have that much of a hive mind, plus why do you think we're still playing WoW? We're waiting for the escapist to show this on ENN:

This just in: Blizzard has run out of ideas for expansion packs. They made new races join the factions and literally tore the world apart. So instead of a real expansion, players will pay Blizzard $39.99 to have their very own prostitute fondle them as they play.

Holy fuck that would actually be a good joke for ENN... Maybe a tad risque
I didn't know anyone was still watching ENN

Until the Warhammer 40K MMO is made and WoW just completely empties.
Wait, what?
Two totally different games, with totally different themes.
Saying that is not desimilar to saying something like: "APB will kill WoW", I mean really. WoW is popular because it is the most popular (which is an endless paradox), and also the best.

If I still played my Xbox I'd have gotten Reach, but since I'm almost totally a PC gamer these days I gave it a miss. However, going on the other 3, I'm sure it's great.

Where do people get the idea that Halo is a space Marine game? The Spartans are Navy.

Yeah I know, I play WoW myself. But they're still both MMOs, this is why people still ask if TOR will be a WoW killer.

I don't want to crush their moment or anything, but when Cataclysm is released soon, won't that break the record? I don't remember, but both Burning Crusade and Wotlk set new first day records, didn't it?
Well yeah but world of warcraft is in it's own league with 11+ million subscribers world wide, it's not really comparable.

You can't really believe that. Really? :p

On topic: Great! It's the best Halo since the first. Good on you, Bungie.

My girlfriend was one of those who led to this number.

We haven't spoken in two days, and I know she'll smell like cheetos when we finally see each other.

Read the last paragraph from the story for the cause of my negative tone. I actually expected Halo Reach to beat Halo 3 by a wider margin.

MW2 sold around 7 million copies on its first day, which is more than $400 million dollars in revenue, assuming a cost of $60 per copy. Clearly, Reach hasn't snatched the record, but first day sales aren't everything, and Reach will undoubtedly continue to sell well for a considerable length of time.
To be fair, MW2 was released on 3 consoles, Reach only on 1. $200 Million isnt bad for an exclusive.
Eh, I guess $200 million is ALRIGHT for one day, lol.

Halo: Reach's success proves the industry is in a healthy state, says Microsoft exec.
Yes, take all the credit Microsoft. You so proved your point that a wildly popular series will still be popular. Good job.

Shit. I feel like the gaming industry has finally gone and turned into Groundhog Day.

A Halo game? Successful? NO WAI!

Seriously though, the game's great fun and I'm loving it. One hell of a way to send off a series. Here's hoping Bungie manages to survive Activision. They've survived Microsoft where others have been, well, just look what happened to Rare and Ensemble.
I agree completely, although it's popular to bundle Halo into MW2 and hate on these days, it's important to remember that there is a reason the games are so successful.

Like others are saying, MW2 was released across 3 platforms. Halo Reach has outsold Halo 3's opening, I feel that is a better indicator of it's success and the public's attitude towards it.

So the target audience for Wow expansions is based on 11 million players, while the target audience for Halo Reach is the 40 million consoles installed worldwide ?

It is comparable, specially since Halo 3 did sell 11 million by itself, so even Halo fans for target audience, it's still a similar number.

Ooo, I actually hadn't thought of that, guess you can't really compare them (but I will and Reach wins at least until Black Ops comes out). I'm pleased by this, as they said this does show the market it there for good games (or at least popular games).

Where the hell do you go to get a game on release date for half it's recommended price? Some back alley, from the back of some shifty looking dude's car?
I'm in the UK.

Before release day there was a full scale price war over Modern Warfare 2. Shops couldn't lower the price of it enough to get you in the door and sell you some other piece of crap to go with it.
Lowest I found it for was £17.99 on release day (local Sainsbury's), aside from a couple of indy stores nowhere was over £30.

After the first week prices rapidly went back up to close to rrp. The big numbers are in week one and with a release like that various stores fell over each other to get the customers. Now, nearly a year later, the headline grabbing numbers aren't there but clearly enough people are still buying to keep the price up.
