Basically I gifted my cousin TF2 on Friday since he didn't have $10 and I did. He was able to download it but then he said he needed to download an update for TF2 and ever since Friday it has always told him that the servers are busy. What should he do? Have any of you encountered this problem? I'm helping him out and nothing seems to be working.

He did that, and he said that when he started it up it said download starting forever. He paused it when it was at 0% when he did so I don't know what's happening. I'll tell him to start an account so maybe he can explain it to us.

Yes. I did that. It would either say Downloading-0% or Download Starting. I've contacted steam and I'm waiting for a response.

This happened to a friend of mine, he had to wipe Steam from his PC and re-download everything again. And with a 7-year old Steam account, that's a lot of games to reinstall.
This was on a PC though, so it may not be the same problem. Might be a good idea to try and reinstall TF2 though.

There was just a free weekend, I'm guessing the servers have been packed with people downloading.

Just restart steam and see if it works, if not, go to options and change where you download from. Pick somewhere close to you but unpopulated, should work.

Just so you know. I won't buy a PC because of three things. 1.Mac runs better. I've proven it with my cousin. 2.Windows is cheap and re-uses things. 3.Windows 7 is a prettier version of vista. Once again proven with my cousin. He knows how to look into the operating system they were the same.

Yeah The free weekend's might of been what caused the servers to grind to a halt, switch to a different download server in steam and try that other then that can't help you sorry

Yeah, the servers are probably overloaded like crazy because of the free weekend. I could barely get on with TF2 installed. If the problem persists, re-install Steam and try again. Keep waiting on a response from Steam support too.

I recommend buying a PC. It won't solve your problem, but it will make you feel better.

I despise Macs as much as the next gamer, but you're going to start a craptastrophe in this thread with your reasoning.

I've actually been trying that and it still doesn't work. Thanks though.

Honestly, the servers have just been packed since Thursday. Something tells me that he should be able to start downloading it toady or tomorrow though. There shouldn't be that many people trying to get TF2.

I play it on my macbook pro and I've never had this problem.
Do you have Leopard(OSX 10.5) or Snow Leopard(OSX 10.6)?
10.6
That might be my problem. I probably need 10.6 which I don't have.
I don't think so. If it was an OS problem, then wouldn't it be more likely that you won't be able to install Steam at all? If the OS is incompatible, then nothing would work, as opposed to just the downloading error.

The fact that TF2, an undeniably popular game, was part of the 'free weekend' is more then likely the problem. Even Valve, and all it's Steamy goodness, are susceptible to the bandwidth demands of the masses. I'd say give it time and try again in a day (Or two), or put in a support ticket to Steam and see if they can help.

Rename/delete clientregistry.blob. It should be located where ypu installed Steam (or in the Documents folder, I dunno where Steam for Mac puts its files) Solves loads of Steam problems. Basically prompts Steam to redownload the client, without having you to re-download your games.

Whatever technical advice people give you will be useless. I had the exact same problem when Myst Online was released not long ago. The only useful thing you can do is wait. Basically, the problem is that because the Mac version has only just been released, there are too many Mac owners trying to download the updates so they can play TF2, so the Valve servers are overloaded. If you wait then by the end of the week, they should have eased off enough for you and your cousin to be able to download the updates. Just as they say, the servers are busy, and there i absolutely nothing you or anyone else can do to prevent that aside from being patient. It sucks, but that's just how it goes.

Must. resist. arguing...

OT: Waiting's probably the only way to go. Lots of people are downloading TF2 and its updates right now because all the Mac users out there can now get it and the price was reduced, so people like me grasped the opportunity to get this great game. Probably within a couple of days the problem will solve itself.

I personally have no problem playing, but I may just be lucky. The first time I tried to start the game it told me that it was "unavailable", but when I tried again a few minutes later it worked without a problem.

Edit: I'm playing on a PC, so it might be a Mac specific problem. If it is that and not a problem with the servers, Valve will surely fix it soon.
