Activision Not Impressed By EA's Name Calling

Kotick may have started this but Richatello did escalate this more than it needed to.

Though Hirshberg's self-categorisation is not very accurate. Activision is no Pixar, it's more like a Michael Bay / Platinum Dunes type of creative company that creates entertaining and popular works that have no deeper value beyond surface appeal.

EA are in a very similar boat but EA vs Activision is like Brett Ratner Vs Michael Bay... you know which is the lesser evil but they're both pretty fucking evil.

(even though I did love Ratner's Rush Hour)


EA - like Ratner - can occasionally do things absolutely gloriously.

But again... this is no Pixar vs Dreamworks

1. EA will not be king, and it's not because of the "juvenile" name calling. It's because their business model says it's good business to restrict where your games are released.

2. This does not "hurt the whole industry". That is just being melodramatic since the average consumer is smart enough to know that Activision is not EA is not Nintendo is not, etc. That is the point of the branding they have all worked so hard to attain.

3. As the article points out, Kotick is a notorious douche bag in this regard. It's literally the case of the pot calling the kettle black. It could be argued that EA started their mud slinging in response to Activision(Kotick) doing it first.

4. As it turns out, MW3 will probably suck balls as much as Blops did. And I love how they introduced dedicated servers after telling the entire PC population to fuck off for two iterations. But, they will sell like crazy, regardless. Meanwhile, EA will still find new ways to shoot itself in the foot, so I think it would be best if these two unruly beasts just consumed each other and we as gamers didn't have to deal with them.

PS. The tail end of number 4 qualifies as wishful thinking.

Am I the only one who doesn't hate CoD?

I bought Battlefield 2 (it was 20 bucks new, so why not?), and it's the same amount of fun for me as BlackOps so far. At the end of the day I think we have room for two big FPS games.

Though I despise the current Activision plan of selling 5 maps for 20 bucks.

The people on this website are notorious for hating CoD, there is usually a 'CoD hate' related thread every day, you will get used to it.

I agree with the outrageous prices for map packs though, which is why I haven't bought any in a long time.

Also "At the end of the day I think we have room for two big FPS games."

Im really disappointed in the escapist at the moment, after reading some of the comments on this thread. Heres someone saying "lets stop the useless bickering and start trying to make better games" but all the comments i saw were fanboys saying that CoD sucks, should die, etc. etc.

Oh EA, I try to like you. I really do. You actually green-lit new interesting franchises like Mass Effect and Mirror's Edge, and are planning to give the latter a sequel even though it wasn't commercially successful. You let DICE make PC the lead platform for BF3. I even somewhat forgave you for Westwood because you, after all, published some of my favorite games in the bygone era.

But then you pull shit like the Dante's Inferno ad campaign and now this feces-flinging, dragging DICE's good name through it all.

Stop tugging at their sleeve and let your game speak for itself, it looks great, no need to slag other games off to prove it.

No, Mass Effect is a shooter about a black-ops space marine - nothing risky here. But that's besides the point - Mass Effect was greenlit and financed by Microsoft, EA bough Bioware after ME1 was finished (it wasn't released at the time). Why do you think there isn't ME1 on PS?

Mirror's Edge was successful, it just wasn't CoD successful.

You let DICE make PC the lead platform for BF3.

This is because BF3 is also being developed for the WiiU, a new console that is somewhat more powerful. It's easier to downscale( from PC to platform) than to upscale(from platform to PC). Also - BF is one of their big franchises and they want to make people use Origins.

They have their own scheme.

As an outsider (not interested in either game, nor the genre they fit in), I have to agree that this name-calling would turn me off of Battlefield 3. It tells me that their game can't speak for itself, so they have to resort to petty and childish insults.

That being said, Riccitiello's comments aren't exactly the best thing he could have done but then EA's never been one to present a good public image.

It's all very childish to be honest, all these big highly paid executives calling each other names and bitching worse than fanboys in Youtube comments. Let the games speak for themselves, the only effect these clowns are having with their ridiculous slap-fighting is negative. Meanwhile both DICE and Infinity Ward are just doing their best to deliver the best games they can. New rule: If you earn over $500,000 a year at a games publisher you aren't allowed to talk.

Really though, implying that Activision is Pixar and Modern Warfare is Toy Story? That's being pretty generous to yourself.
