I know this is ridiculous, but my first thought is still, "Valve is probably going to get a legitimate amount of free publicity out of this".

People who are so easily offended should not view, play, or listen to any kind of media. They're best off living in a cave somewhere.
Besides, who better to break this kind of news to a kid than GLaDOS? Don't answer that.

I understand how it can be offensive, but you need to look at the concept. You have these emotionally stunted (almost sub-childish) AI personalities, and this is the best insult they can come up with. Schoolyard taunts.

Rather then get offended, this is a good time to talk about taunting and bullying, and how to deal with it. The Portal series offers a good example, ignore them then blow them up and put every piece in a fire.

The original game made the joke as well, I mean really it's not made with malicious intent (at least not on the writer's part), overall just being offended because they made ONE mean joke about orphans doesn't make the game worse than Hitler, you're allowed to have an OMG did the game just say that, maybe write a stern letter to the writer. But to make it news worthy enough that the stupid detectors at the Escapist can pick it up is just an overreaction! I mean really just because they make a joke like that doesn't illicit a response like this:

Also the fact that the best they can come up with is calling the protagonist a fat orphan is pretty funny on it own.

If you don't like the joke or found the joke offensive, then just shrug it off.

"It says it's rated 'E' for everybody and I'm thinking maybe it's rated 'E' for everybody except for orphans." Hey-o! Allow me to be "that guy" for a minute and point out that it's actually E10+.
Anyway. You gotta wonder what other games they play if they react like that to "Portal 2."

I liked portal a lot, but I always hated the "you're adopted" jokes. They aren't funny, they're dated, and they sound like they're coming from an elementary schooler. Valve is above that. Despite how much everyone here likes to blindly defend all games, it IS an insensitive, childish, and frankly UNWITTY addition to an overall awesome game.

For once, I really can't see the problem.

I was adopted. I knew I was from a very young age. You know how you stop it being a problem, by proving to your child that it doesn't mean anything to you. Panicking and getting upset the second it comes up teaches a child that it's a problem for you, her parents, and the fact that it's a problem for you is a million times more damaging than any statement by any kind of fictional character.

Children are highly sensitive, but they're also remarkably adaptable. If the parents had kept their cool and just explained to their child that it was a silly joke and that the character in question was being bad for saying it, she will probably just absorb it because she is a child. Not only will it not be in way hurtful for her, she will in fact be better positioned to deal with it when it comes up later on in life.

As it is, they've totally projected their issues onto their child. If she comes out hideously neurotic, I'm blaming them.

You don't want to be in the idiocracy?

Sometimes I wonder how we even got along as a country without devolving into anarchy every ten seconds.

To be fair, they then say "for the record, you are adopted and that's terrible".
It's just GLaDOS trying to confuse Wheatley and all that. Also just to poke fun at him.
But as I said on the earlier thread, there will always be someone who is offended by comedy.

I feel like those two have a lot of experience dealing with this.
This this right here is the proper reply to that 'father'. I'm offended at his blatant grab for attention.

My initial reaction to the orphan's parents complaining. [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q5ODhIFawfs&feature=player_detailpage#t=86s] I'm sorry, but there's nothing offensive here. The evil insane robot is calling you fatty as well and that's not offensive to fat people (if it was, then it would be the most interesting case I'd ever see being presented). At best, it's a childish insult and at worse it's the insane ramblings that are on par with being called a filthy communist. Yes, typically it's used in a negative fashion, but only among people younger than 12, just like "gay" is used.

Or calling you fat. This man has very selective hearing.

Your only about 20 years to late on the adoption joke. It's older than her, and the adoptive father's probably laughed at one before so his complaint is invalid.

Long thread, I'll keep it simple. Upset != offended. It's understandable to get a little bit upset over something like that. Should you get offended though? No.

I am going to string swares into a coherent thought for a second here people, just wait a minute will you?
FUCKING ***** ASS RETARDED FRADA GRAZA BUTT HURT BITCHES!!

Alright, thank you, this is stupid, the parents should have told the child when she turned 8, 7, or even 6, then she'd remember it, but they did it while shes going through puberty, and they just blame the game over the fact that she found out? What were the going to do if she was older then that and never asked, this games rating is fucking perfect, and no commentary, news story or anything can change that.

I cannot believe this. Can you actually make humour - proper humour - that does not, somewhere, offend somebody? And why is it that one family, and one orphan, are upset over a few lines of dialogue in a freaking video game? What on earth is going to happen if he sends her to school?

Oh, so I guess Pokemon is 'E' for everybody except people who think that putting animals in cages is cruel. And Minecraft is 'E' for everybody except people who are easily reminded of the suicide bomber that killed their friend/relative/etc. Mario Kart is 'E' for everybody except people who became paraplegics in go-karting accidents.

Come to think of this, how did it even make the news?
Can you utter anything that does not, somewhere, offend somebody?

The guy in the article is just a squeaky wheel and his capitalist vote isn't even going to change. (I mean he's not going to ask for his money back, or stop buying Valve games)

I think it's more that the writer made the mountain out of a molehill than anything else. Sensationalism sells.
