Well maybe he shouldn't be raiding the third world for children. I for one love adopted women. They put out.

That's the worst thing they've ever heard? Send them over to me and in 30seconds I'll make their heads explode. And seriously, if some very poorly made adopted jokes by a British ROBOT are really upsetting this kid, how is she going to survive in school where she's gonna get WAY worse adoption based insults. Oh wait, it didn't upset the kid. It upset the parent as these situations always go. Too much fucking spare time on their hands.

It's a bright future full of pansies we're making.

I dnt think adopted robots would b offended by this...
and bsidz y did that dad say that his daughter was not ready to talk about it when she said that she did not hear it. Hey she might have not heard it. she was probably to into the game to even care about what another robot was saying to the protagonist.
goodness, if that was really offensive, where are other families with adopted kids? I think that if it was supposed tu be offensive, more than this guy would have called the media about it.

I liked portal a lot, but I always hated the "you're adopted" jokes. They aren't funny, they're dated, and they sound like they're coming from an elementary schooler. Valve is above that. Despite how much everyone here likes to blindly defend all games, it IS an insensitive, childish, and frankly UNWITTY addition to an overall awesome game.
That's the point though. Wheatley is a moron. Not just a regular moron, he's the result of the combined effort of the greatest minds of a generation trying to create the dumbest moron that ever lived. Going "Fatty, fatty, adopted fatty." is as clever as he can get. As far as GLaDOS... she's GLaDOS. She's insulting you and it's not as though she has a lot to work with. If she made fun of her ethnicity or basically ANYTHING else, the shit storm would be a billion times bigger. There's always gonna be someone getting in a hissy fit over everything.

Screw sensitivity. Thicker skin ladies and gentlemen, grow some. You'll enjoy life more.

No matter what someone, somewhere is going to be offended by it. It's a fact of life. To be frank, I did think the joke where GlaDOS sets up you meeting your parents and then it being a lie was in bad taste.

Well, it's not a big deal. I mean...oh.

GLaDOS later ends up countering the adoption thing by telling Wheatley, "What's wrong with being adopted?" Wheatley is at a loss naturally and, being a core designed to offer only bad ideas, cannot reply.

To put things simply, it's not a bad thing to be adopted; just don't let things like this hurt you. Life is there to be overcome, not suffered.

Sounds to me like this is some attempt at a money grab for "psychological damages". Or just attention whoring of someone that really needs to grow some skin. People get way too insulted over nothing these days.

Soooo apparently he is pissed that a game had the audacity to be making comments to a fictional character. HOW DARE IT NOT KNOW THAT THE PLAYER MIGHT VAGUELY SHARE A TRAIT WITH A PROTAGONIST!!!

Well, it is nice to know that he will be teaching his children that bitching is the correct response to anything remotely not to your taste and that you are entitled to have psychic games without any hint of negativity.

Where does he live? The Moon? Also, as said before, she is ten not fucking stupid. She knows something is up with Mom and Dad.

Really? He found this offensive enough to call up his local new channel? seriously I've heard worse insults thrown to people from my teachers than referring to someone who doesn't exist as adopted. I've seen people be made fun of for really everything if your being made fun of for being adopted than you have it lucky, hell I've been made fun of for having a big nose, a friend of mine was made fun for having long hair, another for having red hair, another for wearing round glasses instead of square ones like everyone else, another for being a foot shorter than normal...
I agree with the first comments, god forbid he EVER send her to school... Although its allot more likely she'll be made fun of for being Chinese if she goes to school now that I think about it.

I cannot believe this. Can you actually make humour - proper humour - that does not, somewhere, offend somebody? And why is it that one family, and one orphan, are upset over a few lines of dialogue in a freaking video game? What on earth is going to happen if he sends her to school?

ok, on second thought, im going to play portal 2 because i cant think of one.
Thing is... GLaDOS herself bitchslaps these offended individuals...

"Tragedy equals comedy plus time."

In essence, the difference between a joke and genuine insult is how long it goes on for.

Here's what Valve have said:

"You're kidding... you're kidding, right? Oh, you're serious, let me laugh even harder."

Things GLaDOS says insults the unintelligent, the unemployed, the friendless, the homeless, birds, children, people who don't respond positively to neurotoxin....

In fact, let's really stretch this out - people who are emotionally attached to inanimate objects. Yes, that's a disorder, and the whole Companion Cube thing could be said to make fun of that.

But nobody has said that, because it's fucking stupid.

Alright, this one is simple:

If you don't want to talk to your child about something, don't be surprised when the same (presumably) uncomfortable discussion is brought to your child's attention by means that you hadn't anticipated or can't control. What is it in french; "Se la vi" or something like that?

Don't view this a a bad thing. View it as an opportunity to have said discussion. The basis of which SHOULD be - "Life is hard. Get used to it, kid. You ARE strong enough to withstand it, if you remember how much the people in your life care about you." Also, maybe, throw in an "even though we don't like it, it's more about how you react to it than us that makes it important."

Not that all kids and their situations are the same, or that all parenting styles are, but I'm pretty confident that this level of up-front honesty will be better for them than ignoring/diverting attention from the issue.

PS - "Se la vi" is, as I'm told, a French phrase. I'm not sure of the exact translation or even if I'm spelling right... Is it "that is life," or "such is life?" If any French speaker knows, please tell me, as I'm always trying to further my understanding of, well, everything. Thank you.

Responses here are so typical, you're all gamers that aggressively defend video games to the death. I don't even need to click the comments anymore to know what responses are going to be like.

While it's true that there's nothing really offensive in it save for a few people, I understand that the dad was shocked to hear the remark out of the blue. He didn't say he was hiding it from his daughter, he said it just never came up. He was waiting for an opportune time to sit down and have a talk about her being adopted.

That's why it probably came to such an offensive shock, because now they're going to have to tackle the issue right away since shes heard that, rather than wait for whatever time they might have felt appropriate.
Finally someone who agrees with me.

Most of the gamers on this site are a bunch of knee-jerkers who are too busy being outraged that they can't even attempt to see (or, more likely, outright refuse to see) the opposing parties' point-of-view.

Gee, when I put it like that, gamers seem just as bad as the people they're raging against. Significantly worse, if you consider that most arguments here boils down to "you're not a gamer, shut up."

HAHAHA "when I put it like that"!!!

Yeah when you put it like lies anything can seem like anything!

Just like a insult about being fat and dumb and thus unloved and undeserving of love is some how offensive to someone with two parents who love them...

Oh here's a shock, what if she is fat, but her parents were waiting to talk to her about her fatness until it came up, but then the whole "Santa" thing came up and now they are outraged that a fat old man would force them to talk to their kid!!!! AHHHHHHHHHHHH Someone alert the press! ! Interview Jesus, how could he allow a fat old man to take over his day!!!
Wow, you replied to my post with a whole bunch of single minded reactionary bullshit! I completely take back everything I said about gamers being worse than anti-gamers. clearly we are the more level-headed and polite of the two groups.

I was going to stand fast on my opinion, but it was the way you wrote "AHAHAHAHA" and used multiple exclamation points that convinced me that you're a super mature individual.

Hmmm, seems like you don't know what "single minded reactionary bullshit" would actually mean. I sure as heck have no idea how anything I said had anything to do with any of those four words.

Well assuming you meant "single-minded", which I think you meant to mean, not seeing other peoples points of view, I absolutely was not that. I put myself in the mind of a fat dumb parentless person, as well as a foolish parent who is mad their fat kid is as fat as santa. If you really meant "single minded" like you said, meaning only using one mind, I guess you got me there.

Now "reactionary" I also assume you meant I had an overreaction, which I completely did not. My response was of the same tone and tenor as your comment and much more level then your profanity laden overreaction.

And you only call it "bullshit" because you have no substantive rebuttal so you name call.

I could continue to pwn you, but you know the old saying about arguing with idiots ! :D
Noo... no. What you posted was some unrelated crap about fat people. Completely irrelevant to my "people here are over sensitive when it comes to someone saying something bad about videogames".

But clearly nothing I say will convince you that you are anything but completely and totally right in every way, so enjoy the orgasm you undoubtedly experienced as you "pwned" me. Well done
I think you're over sensitive to gamers outraging about games.

If you read this entire thread almost no one is worried about them using Portal as a sounding board. It's dismissed outright as the nonsense it is. So instead of contributing to the conversation you troll everyone who says that this semi lobotomized parent is a fucking idiot.

Let it go.
"this semi lobotomised parent is a fucking idiot"

That's exactly what I'm talking about. How can we as gamers ever hope to be thought of as mature if the collective continue to spout dross like that?

And dont you DARE suggest that nobody wants gaming to be thought of as "mature". The exact reason all you people are so to on arms about news articles like this is because you want games to no longer be lumped in with "toys for children".
My point stands.

You take my argument to be one about this parents complaints about Portal. Remove Portal and insert "Thursday Night Sitcom Y" or "Soap Operas X, Y, Z", "News Show N" or Sixty Minutes on Chinese Adoptions and this guy is still a lobotomized idiot; Portal not having anything to do with it.

You have a bone to pick with gamers over reacting and it is all you are seeing.

Let it go.
