Hooooooly crap.
Looks like Sony should have done their research before pulling the plug... I do believe the world's most powerful airforce is a little more of a "security risk" than a few hackers...
...Because the United States will declare war on Sony? I could have seen it happening, but luckily Bush isn't in the White House any more. And Labour is out of Number Ten so hopefully we wouldn't be dragged along with you anyway.
Seriously... I don't think Sony cares. Unless they made a PS3 research pack that cost enough to actually get them a profit, they don't have to do shit for America.
No need to declare war on Sony. Understand that Japan has basically been under US occupation since the end of World War II. They only have a token SSDF because we allow them to, and it's greatly outnumbered/outgunned by the vast amounts of military forces we have stationed there. Japan is pretty much our major doorway/foothold to the Eastern World.
The occupation is a mixed blessing, because we're fairly nice about it, and also we've been keeping a lot of people who REALLY don't like Japan (from World War II and other things) off their back.
The US military is also a big business in Japan, because all of those troops spend a lot of money which goes from US payroll, to them, to Japan's economy.
*IF* the US Air Force as a whole got really upset, chances are there wouldn't be any threats involved, you'd have the Japanese goverment (for all their various statements) running to make right whatever we were all upset about. Political leverage basically...
However, consider that this is all over what? 2,000 PS-3 units? The amount of money involved despite being used for research is pitiful on this level. It's enough where the Air Force is going to express it's irritation, but it's not really going to get upset. Your not going to have say one of the Joint Chiefs on the phone with our Japanese Embassy demanding that someone make good on this. Interesting gamer news, but really kind of a petty thing in the overall scheme of things.
I would think that Sony would be interested in making this right in the interests of potentially selling more systems to the US Goverment. They provide good support and next thing you know 2,000 units being given a trial is 200,000 units spread between every
research base the military has. I for one have never believed the claim that they take a loss on the hardware.
