If it was me, I'd probably wind up taking another kids property that while not unknown isn't being retreaded quite as much. I look at "The Wizard Of Oz" as having a lot of potential for a "twisted" approach that hasn't been exploited. We've had "Tin Man" and a few books like "Wicked" written with alternative takes on it, but it's not currently being as retreaded as much as "Alice". What's more I don't think anyone has really done a mature-themed Oz video game.
Actually, at one point American McGee had plans for a mature and equally nightmarish version of Oz, but the project was canceled. So for what it's worth you weren't the first to have that stroke of genius.

I hope you were a late bloomer into gaming. Otherwise, how are the therapy sessions going?
Late bloomer? Not at all. I played the demo for it when I was... 11-12? Right alongside Quake 3:Team Arena, Age of Empires and ... Summoner? Probably.

Am I the only one who thinks the trailer played like a parody of what an Alice game would be like? Everything from the "Wonderland is turning EVVVVILLLL" sequence to the random blood and violence. Trailers like this are why we hear idiotic statements like "games cause rape" or "games will never be art".

Even though the trailer for Alice: Madness Return has some violent images like Alice repeatedly knifing a teapot-Beholder-crab thing, McGee said that he tries to stay true to the character and the story. "We often get pressure from outside to make things more violent than we think they should be," McGee said. "So the battle is actually the other way around, it's not about trying to have more gore and blood in there, but trying to have what is in there be reasonable and maintain some sense of contrast between the moments of light and the moments of dark. I don't think people are going to view this game as overly violent or bloody - though it does have some pretty mature themes in it."

Sad that people are actually *trying* to get him to make the game more violent than he wants. I think this says a lot about the industry...

That was a cool trailer. I never had the opportunity to play the first one, so I am a bit excited that this IP will be revisited. Definitely going to keep an eye on this one... you see what I did there?

I missed out on the first as a kid and I regret it. I wish I could find a copy that isn't really expensive.

A game where I don't play as a warrior/mage/rogue or a super powered space marine, but as a (possibly) hallucinating insane chick that likes to stab squishy teapot monstrosities in the eye? I must be dreaming!

Also that butterfly scene looked like an acid trip gone bad. Hell, the whole game might be just that!

Looks interesting. Here's hoping American McGee can finally make lightning strike twice.

The one thing I was really looking forward to, the concept art from the first game being actually visibly in the game, rather than a weaker pixelated version, has been let down by the Hatter looking less like... well, this:

I have that character. He sits on my bookshelf with the Caterpillar, Alice, and the Chesire cat. I cleaned the store out of them the same day I bought the game.

Not that I'm complaining or anything, I think it's a brilliant idea.. but hasn't the "Dark Alice"-thing been done almost to death? It seems like it's the most popular franchise to "darkify" and between this, Alice is Dead and that remake of the movie they made... I'm just saying that it doesn't seem very original...
Actually I am complaining. I think it might be because I've always loved that sort of "Let's corrupt a family friendly story into something dark and PG 18"-theme, but now it's becoming *gasp* mainstream! :O
Oh well. I will still defintely check this game out! From the trailer (which tells nothing of gameplay or story) it seems awesome. But that is sort of the point isn't it? And I guess I always have "Winnie the Pooh - Christopher Robin's Blood" to look forward to. >:D

American McGee started the Dark Alice thing however. Everyone followed him after his success.

Anywho I'm quite excited for this game. I'm glad that its not trying to be uber violent while being mature at the same time. Not everything has to be blood and guts after all. I'm starting to feel like McGee is the only sane man in the gaming industry now.

Anyone know where I can get a copy of the first one that'll play on Vista? Or will I need to get some sort of os emulator?

(I'm asking for legal means, obviously)

I lost my original cd, I want to replay the original game so badly now. It's a shame the game is not distributed in digital form, I can only hope it gets released in GOG some day.

Looks pretty sleek. I haven't seen Tim Burton's movie and I don't plan to, as I wanted so badly for that movie to be this Alice and not that other Alice.

EDIT: For those that are interested in running the original game, it uses the Quake 3 engine, so it should run like a charm in Win7/Vista without much tweaking, if any.

Omg, this is just absolutely amazing. I can't wait.

Out of all the games I've played in my entire life, American McGee's Alice, was the ONLY game I have ever played solely because of the story. The game play was ok, but the story was just AMAZING.

I still have my disks somewhere, I'm going to have to go back and play it sometime soon.

This has made me oh so very happy. LOVED the original!

Although I don't get as much of the creepy feel of it......BUT it won't stop me from putting an order on it.
