Neon Genesis Evangelion, definitely. It's a mecha anime, though it becomes more psychological near the end. If you decide to watch it, you gotta watch the anime first, then Death and Rebirth, followed by End of Evangelion. Helps it make much more sense.

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, Shakugan No Shana, Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha. All good action series.

Also: hell yeah Gundam 08th!

Full Metal Panic! and Gundam Wing are the best mecha series I've seen. If you haven't watched Cowboy Bebop you're insane (it's worth it for the music alone, as is Wolf's Rain, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, and basically ANYTHING Yoko Kanno has done work for). Trigun is wonderful action with a lot of weird philosophical quirks nearer the end of the series (and some major tearjerker moments).

My favorite anime is what they call a Blue Bishounen Ghetto, so i'll leave that off the list.

Read Or Die is pretty good. I also liked the Hellsing series, although everyone complains that it's nothing like the comic. Cromartie High School is one of my favorite comedies.

Read Or Die was good, but the OVA was better than the TV series.

I didn't think about Hellsing...

baccano
evangelion ( the new movies are ok as well)
Ghost in the Shell - Stand Alone Complex 1/2/movies
haibane renmei (if like Serial Experiments Lain)
full metal alchemist
desert punk (really good)
cowboy bebop
The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (really good but I don’t know if it’s your style)
I've seen all of those I thought Eva was too pretentious. Ghost in The Shell was good but I liked the original 1995 movie more. Baccano! was underrated. I didn't like the ending to FMA. Haibane Renmei I couldn't get into the same way I did SEL. I really like Desert Punk. Cowboy Bebop was cool. Haruhi was pretty entertaining but the endless 8 cycle in the second season was infuriating...

What did you think of it?
OT: To Aru Kagaku No Railgun is entertaining, if you're into it. It's about a schoolgirl(big surprise there, eh?) that can use electricity in innovative ways in a city where a lot of people have superpowers.

Until I actually read the OP I was going to suggest Elfen Lied. I've seen the series twice, and it's great if you like buckets of gore, plus I have an immature crush on Lucy (in the same way that most people probably have a crush on Lara Croft of the DOA girls...). I happen to be a big fan of cute psycho-sadistic girls...

But yeah, there's also Hellsing which is another I really love (and I had a bit of a crush on Seras Victoria too :D). Plus, I've heard great things about Death Note. I haven't seen much anime myself, just Elfen Lied and Hellsing, but Death Note is what I intend to watch next, since it's apparently really good :).

I thought it Blue Sub No.6 was great the pacing was really good for 4 episodes. the story was very well written. the characters were easy to relate to and complex. there development is very gradual and just sneaks up on u which is always a plus. the animation and art style are both very good but the CG alot of the time got in the way of the animation but whatever it looked good for 1998. so overall it was a great show but the CG awkward and dated and it might as well have been a movie because of how short it was... oh yeah the sound track was awesome too it was very atmospheric and usually fit the show...

Death Note (Psychological/supernatural thriller)

Clannad (comedy/romance/drama/make you bawl your eyes out: and I don't cry often)

Kanon (pretty much like Clannad)

Full Metal Alchemist (fantasy/action/drama)

Cowboy Bebop (sci-fi/awesome)

Watch all of these. You must.

I've watched a Eva, Death and Rebirth, and the End Of Evangelion I thought it was good but overrated and pretentious... once u start scrifice story telling it all goes down hill but the Rebuild of Evangelion seems promising sense it actually has some damn explanations instead of just bringing in Deus Ex Machinas at the last minute like the show and movie tend to do...

You sir, will get killed by a girlfriend someday. Re-assess your tastes. Right now. Both in both instances you mentioned, you might get your head asploded (if you lie to Lucy, say hello to the stump that is your neck. With Seras you might get caught in the crossfire between the Hellsing Organization and the baby-eating vampire Nazi zombies).

Paranoia Agent. It's a weird one, but very entertaining nonetheless. Also, Afro Samurai, if you can dig over-the-top parodies of typical samurai anime.

Help us out a little more here. Do you want to bother with a long show with many episodes, or a short one you can get over with quickly? Do you want something light or something heavy? Comedy or serious? Something old or something new? Any particular genre?

Princess Tutu.

Don't let the name fool you, it's actually pretty damn good. Others...Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha, Rurouni Kenshin (especially the Trust and Betrayal OVA, that thing is amazing), Cowboy Bebop, and Samurai Champloo.

Others that might be farther but I'd still recommend...Excel Saga (extreme parody of just about everything), Steel Angel Kurumi (what? I liked it), and Hayate the Combat Butler (also pretty funny).

And Lucky Star, if you're on the right level of anime otaku.
