I'm a fan of Lucky Star, as you can tell from my avatar. Slow paced but funny and it always seems to be referencing something.

Also I just started watching Seitokai No Ichizon. Again a slow pace, but still funny.

And I've already been ninja'd by lots of people in suggesting Cowboy Bebop
Yeah Lucky Star is my guilty pleasure(not in a sexual way I'm just embarrassed to watch it) and if u liked Lucky Star check out Pani Poni Dash, just think of a more fast paced and hectic Lucky Star and with references up the ass from Terminator and Star Trek to Lupin III and Evangelion.
Thanks for the recommendation, I'll have to check it out

Neon Genesis Evangelion, definitely. It's a mecha anime, though it becomes more psychological near the end. If you decide to watch it, you gotta watch the anime first, then Death and Rebirth, followed by End of Evangelion. Helps it make much more sense.
He could just watch the new movies/remakes that they have been making lately. For a first timer that might be best.
No, not at all. First off, only the 1st movie out of the 4 are on DVD and available at the moment. The second movie is planned to go to DVD some time in the spring, and who knows how long it'll take for the other 2 to become available.

And secondly, even though the first movie stays more or less true to the anime's episodes, it does leave a good many things out. I've also heard that the story becomes drastically different in the second movie. Prior knowledge of the original anime would help make things make more sense and, IMO, make the movie much more enjoyable.

I've seen all of those I thought Eva was too pretentious. Ghost in The Shell was good but I liked the original 1995 movie more. Baccano! was underrated. I didn't like the ending to FMA. Haibane Renmei I couldn't get into the same way I did SEL. I really like Desert Punk. Cowboy Bebop was cool. Haruhi was pretty entertaining but the endless 8 cycle in the second season was infuriating...
Watch the Full Metal Alchemist movie, it gives a much better feeling of closure.

The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (really good but I don’t know if it’s your style)
Once you hit the endless eight the series slaps you in the face and screams "You will not under any circumstances enjoy this series further!"

While that it is true that it will be a good while before all four are available on DVD, I still believe that once they are available it'd be a good starting place for new fans. And for the exact reasons you stated.

The movies do leave a good deal out, and will probably stray a bit. But this will make it easier for some people to actually follow it and understand. And then they can go and watch the original series and movies, and have everything expanded upon.

I dunno. I guess it'd just depend on the type of person.
Yea. I did enjoy the first video though, and I eagerly await the release of the rest of the movies, but I think it really depends the most on how the movies will end, considering that's always been the most confusing part of NGE.

Went to edit my edited post and lost the list of anime suggestions.... So here it is in it's own post.

Also, try out these suggestions:
Outlaw Star
Fate/Stay Night
Crest of the Stars (Banner of the Stars 1 + 2 are it's sequels)
Rurouni Kenshin
RahXephon
Samurai 7
Last Exile
Orphen
Scrapped Princess
Aquarion (A little odd it may be...)
Fafner (Yes, I love Mechs)
Noein (It either hooks you or it doesn't)
Twelve Kingdoms (It's main stories are closed up well, though they start another one near the end which is never finished, still great though)
Slayers
Record of Lodoss War (If you take this suggestion, make sure you watch Record of Lodoss War: Heroic Knight second, as it's a sequel. I bought it first accidentally, not knowing)

A lot of people seem to be suggesting Death Note, but if you don't mind reading, I highly recommend reading the manga. I found it to be sooo much better than the anime.

Other than that Im not so sure what to recommend for you, We seem to have slightly different tastes in anime. Tho I havnt watched much of any of the anime you listed. Maybe ill give them a try.

Noir. I'm not going to list for you as enough people are giving you lists. It's amazing.

desert punk (really good)
If you loved that, I'd read the manga because it's actually a lot better, though the tone is a little different.
Noir would be my #9 on my list if I had constructed it that far...
Alright then fine. Gundam Wing/War in the pocket, Blue Seed, Black Lagoon and for films, Perfect Blue and Paprika.

Then just watch brotherhood, it follows the manga so it'll be ongoing.
