This is relevant with my interests.
I seconded this! I get the feeling that this story is far from over.

I dislike the use of scapegoat's for reasons people do things.
Look, I've played violent games all my life, started with the Heretic game which was similar to Doom.

I know right from wrong because my first teacher: My Parents! did their damn job. These people try to find way to say its someone else who caused this person from flipping out and doing something like this.

These guys/gals shot this girl. They are not babies who don't understand pain or death. They knew what they were doing. Personally, I think people who kill people, especially like this, need to be killed off as well. They knew what was happening and they still did it. They went and did their plan to shoot up the place. In my books, if I was the leader of a country, they would get the death penalty if there was concrete evidence.
Your enthusiasm is admirable but I have a better solution then the death penalty and here is why. If their dead, they cannot be made to suffer for their crime. Why should we give the gang bangers the easy way out? The appropriate punishment is to make their every waking moment a living hell from which there is no escape. Hence I propose we throw them in prison with other big burly criminals so they can learn every day and night what it is like to be someone's b&*ch.

As for the issue of violent video games I posit this statement from Penn and Teller: http://youtu.be/iX60j_rlTOA

I'm surprised, as usually, tho I'm not a regular viewer of it, I've seen clips online where they're actively defending freedom of speech in cases where a comedian's offended people with a joke, for example, somewhere where the Mail would be asking for hanging to be brought back.

I always saw Wright as fairly central in his stances, tho of course you can't be sure of the stance of who's actually building the show, and then you have the 'guests'.

When it's comedians you're naturally going to get a more left view than when it's journalists and TV types. Especially TV types, as *puts on tin foil hat* TV and the movie industry are seeing gaming as a threat to their customers, and of course, why wouldn't they use every opportunity to demonise them? *conspiracy theory mode off*

Holy crap, gamers are actually responding intelligently :O

btw is "The Wright Stuff" the equivalent of FOX in the land of fish and chips?
It is normally fairly reliable and interesting. I say normally, these kind of blunders are rare but not unexpected.

Just wanted to comment on how pleasing the comments section is, on one hand you seem to have 'MUH MUH FINK OF DUH CHILDRENZ' and then long, thought out, reasoned opinions as to why the piece of TV was hopelessly wrong. Anything in favour of it was about 2 lines of typos, and anything calling it out as factless nonsense actually did so in a sensible, understated way.

Bravo to the gamers for not sinking to the level of abuse and making us all lesser people by reflection.

I would say, while 'The Wright Stuff' is pretty much vacant fluff, it's not that bad, and I certainly don't hate Wright, he tends to defend stuff when his guests are just following the tabloid lines, and when he had to oppose the freedom for comedians to say what they want, he wasn't trying too hard, seems like he just had to, to show some of the other side.

I was really disappointed this was made into a television episode rather than a made-for-tv movie like Mazes and Monsters [http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0084314/]. At the very least we'd get some cheezy acting to provide plenty of riffing potential on youtube. Maybe Justin Bieber could be convinced to play Tom Hank's role as the guy who was convinced that the D&D/video game world and the real world were one and the same?

"We don't really need reports to tell us [that violent video games cause anti social behavior] do we?" she asked. "Common sense tells you if you expose a child to violent imagery and a lot of it for many hours a day for many years on end, it's going to have an effect."

Still don't see why people say this, it might have an effect on a very small group of people but the same can be said about books, movies, plays, and television. Those gang members didn't do this because of MWF2 they did it because they wanted to shoot the other gang. Most people have personal problems when they do stuff like this.

Considering most people don't even play Call of Duty Moder Warfare 2 single player, I see this as a sort of mute point. Let alone the fact that you have to be 18 or older to buy the game at most stores that sell games so if anything, the parents or an older sibling/friend likely bought it for them if a kid is playing said game.

Ugh. I don't know why I click these articles, every time I do it makes me physically ill. The idiocy of these people makes these problems so much worse.

Once again they throw the blame of the world's problems on videogames... to be honest in my humble opinion, I think violent videogames can sometimes reduce violent crime. Lets people vent their frustrations and anger on the avatar of someone else.

We should gather all of our cats into and army and send them to drown the writers of this show in hairballs.

Does anyone by chance have a good theory( More likely a hypothesis but theory rolls off the tongue better) for the gross drop in intelligence in the general population of the entire world over the last decade or so?

Then again I suppose the one consistent human failing is our general inability to accept responsibly for anything we do and to shift blame to anything or anyone else no matter how idiotic the idea that the other thing was the cause.
I don't think humanity is any stupider, I'd say that intelligence has (on average) gone up, it's just that the nature of our societies now for some reason values the opinion of any old idiot.

It's almost as if we've equated the notions of free speech and equality with: "It doesn't matter if you think, just say whatever and it counts just as much as the most well-researched, logically derived argument."

Somewhat more OT: As somebody else has already said, this reactionary, frightened generation is almost at its end...not much longer now until those who played games growing up are making societial decisions; let's just try to remember not to be this stupid when the new generations media arrives!

I thought Homo Sapiens Hatesvideogamesforgreatignoranciensis died out after that Boolitstorm business. Ah well.
If I see another story like this, I won't even bother reading it. Because I'm just that cool.
Except in real life. I'm not cool in real life. But atleast I can pretend on the internet.

I have a comment that is just as fanatically retarded as the the one quoted.

"We don't really need a report to tell us [that relegion is the only reason for extremism] do we?."

The technological illiterate (amish so to speak.. haha) will always blame that, which they themselves do not understand / abide or agree with. All human beings are capable of causing harm or even murder, the only thing that stops us doing so is our capacity for understanding what it would be like to be the victim.

I'm not sure if it's been brought up, but they keep on so much about how many more of these crimes are happening.

Could it be more truthful that these crimes are REPORTED more is all?

Similar to the way the UK at least is utterly obsessed with paedophilia, despite it being a minor issue at best, it's always been around, as have murderers. It's just that we're being forcefed it thru media.

I don't believe humanity is more violent than it was 20,50 or 100 years ago, it's just more reported.
