Hmm. Never having played an MMO (besides a trial of Fallen Earth that was a disappointment), this makes me kind of scared of them...

Oh, geez, I nearly bought that!
£30 down the pot it would've been.

We, shame to see a game go down, I guess, even if I never played it.

Indeed, I was cautious because of the reviews and was waiting for a free trial.

Just a request, could you mention it's free now [http://twitter.com/benbateman] in your article? I think there are some people here who could be interested in seeing the downfall of APB.
Do you think they're hoping that enough people will show some interest in it. And they won't have to shut it down. That would be kinda cool.
No. I'm pretty sure it's not that.

It's a common practice when MMOs are shutting down - making them free that is. Since Realtime Worlds is dead anyways, there is pretty much no way APB is coming back to life.

This makes me sad. I bought the game and played it for a while before quitting due to balance issues and frustration to find out yesterday they'd added a ready feature and some toning that fixed a lot of my issue with the game.
Just picked it back up and had all my friends patch it to. =/

Unfortunately this'll be a big scary sign telling other developers to never do anything similar again. Perhaps the idea that customization to this degree matters will live on to something else.
City of X, Champions online were worse games by far in my opinion. I love mmorpgs and hate shooters/racing games sooo, that says something about APB's customization.

Well I'm off to salvage some more time online.

And another soul is absorbed into WoW's horrific throne...

Although that being said, its been more the fault of the delays and the lack of marketing.
Was this ever even considered a WoW killer?

APB only ever looked like a bigger version of GTA/Saints Row online.

I am suprised to see it's given up the fight already. Most MMOs seem to at least try make improvements, like AoC, big hype, no success, released newer content to try put life into it.

Did they ever have a free weekend of free trial of APB? Because I am downloading as fast as I can to try this out.

You can't win a fight if you've no resources. I don't think this was something they wanted to do, hence "premature" and the announcement of it being cut the day after a patch was announced.

It's a real shame for all parties involved. Those who put money into it, the staff of Realtime Worlds, everyone who worked on it and for the game itself. I never played it, but what I saw of the character builder was utterly stunning. I really hope that a developer (Especially an RPG developer or whomever is doing Saints Row 3) picks up on it and tries to match it. Such a shame.

They pulled the plug on it really fast. While I wasn't crazy about it when I played the beta it looked like it could have been decent if it had just been a little more polished. Oh well.

Now this is just sad. I actually wanted to get this game, due to the robust customization suite but decided against when I saw how poor the game mechanics were and a lack of variety with the missions.

I sure hope the customization will make it's way into other future games. At least games like Brink [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OLOhOBfB3g8] are getting there.
