And here I was hoping to say that they don't share a niche. But it turns out Apple is trying to do games.

I use them for movie editing (though I've graduated from High School and will unlikely edit movies again) and occasionally Diablo II (haven't in months).

Now, I don't know anything about computers, but aren't Apples the ones that employ that nerd from Galaxy Quest to portray a human representation of their computers? The one whose character's nerdiness saved Tim Taylor and Sigourney Weaver from the situation created by nerdy space alien lobster squids? That movie was enjoyable, primarily due to the characters. Alan Rickman is awesome. His only weakness is Bruce Willis. And magic. He doesn't do so well against magic either.

Scuse me, I find that quite rude.

I'm a teenager, a girl, wouldn't dare buy an iPhone/pod/touch. And I have quite a few consoles in my bedroom so I am a gamer too.

Saying teenage girls aren't gamers, pfft...

I think Apple is feeling confident because the iPod and iPhone have such a huge market because people buy them for their multiple features. Gaming is just a little side thing, that Apple discovered could be a major selling point.

Alright, alright, perhaps I should have clarified that statement a bit before posting. What I meant by teenage girls were ones who are totally immersed in popular culture, and thus more likely to buy Apple's shit because it looks good with their purse.

Teenage girls who have an IQ of over 80 and can think for themselves, keep up the good work. All four of you...

I have a iPod and a DSi. Apple, please give me a REAL reason why I should shell out more money for your iPhone/iPod Touch, instead of the weak ones you provided.

Apple is extremely confident in the iPhone and iPod Touch's capabilities as a gaming platform, so much that the company did something at today's iPod event that it has yet to before: pan its competition in the DS and PSP.
I bet every PC gamer in the audience struggled to remember the last time a Macintosh was considered a legit competing gaming platform. I bet every Mac gamer who remembered the bad old days before BootCamp felt queezy.

"And people are starting to see what a great gaming device this is," Apple's Phil Schiller declared while slides of the DS and PSP were displayed on screen. "When you think about the companies that came before us... when you played those other systems, they seemed so cool, but now when you look at them, they don't stack up against the iPod Touch."
I've had one Gameboy, ever. The orignal one, "the DMG", working to this day. It has never exploded or caught fire. For some reason the batterys have always been recklessly accessible behind a piece of detachable plastic, and bizarrely the machine has not been designed so that only manufacturer approved batterys can fit inside. Indeed this may not even void the warranty!

I therefore concede it for doesn't stack up with Apple's products.

Apple outlined four things that make the PSP and DS worse for gaming: "No Multi-Touch user interface. Games are expensive. No App Store. No iPod." Then they displayed some images of DS and PSP games with their comparatively hefty price tags, an unsightly picture of a GameStop store shelf (which might be more of an insult to GameStop, really) and a chart showing how the iPhone's 21,1878 available games trumps the 3,680 on DS and 607 on PSP.
Hand held gaming needs that multi touch display about as much as PS3 and XBox360 fanboys need their own Wiimotes. No dice.

That games are expensive? Perhaps a legitimate point, Apple may have an advantage of selling hardware that is not sold at a loss (forcing a business model of eeking a profit out) here.

No App Store? I don't think the App Store is a killer app, even on iPods though. Buying a game and downloading is appealing, but if Trent Reznor's frustration with getting NIN's The Slip onto the App Store is any indication this won't be nurturing a new generation of Indie Game Programmers any time soon.

No iPod? Surely you mean no iPod touch? I know plenty of gamers who'll have both an iPod to listen to and a GBA. And will all games on the 'Touch allow music playback simultaneous to gameplay? If not, then what is the advantage to having the convergence between the games console and the music player?

During the Blizzard era? The starcraft and diablo 2 era? Yeah, we had those games on Mac.

Blizzard's been really nice to us Mac gamers. It's also ironic to play Age of Empire 2 on Mac.(Since it's published by Microsoft).

On topic*However, Mac always been the guy who takes himself too seriously before everyone else. You know the Mac Vs PC adds? PC decided to fight back with the same tactic.

Even though I'm a Mac user, I can't wait for that commercial with Mario punching the Apple logo.

I can't wait until the "I'm an iPhone and I'm a PSP and I'm a DS" ads start. Seriously Apple, I know you think you're pretty shit-hot being a monopoly that nobody worries about, but you guys aren't capable of taking on either of them in the handheld market. You're going up against a company that has steamrolled the competition for almost 2 decades and the only company to ever legitimately stand against them in that time. And what do you have? A touchscreen-only interface and an oversaturated game library that's of dubious quality. Oh, and your console costs as much as a PS3 or 360.

Okay, I'll stop. I had my fun...

When they can make an apple product that isn't overpriced garbage, then they can have the tiniest shred of respect from me. Until then they need to stop bashing superior handhelds and stick to hawking their shiny expensive things.

Apple is a giant pig-headed company that hates its users as much as it hates its competetion that needs to go die... alone. I hate the company and do not own or support any product from them.

That said, Zune HD is gonna kick the iTouch's ass and even the Zune HD does not stand on level footing as the PSP or DSi on the gaming side of life. (I am not fond of PSP or the DSi as well, a bit too casual for my taste)

Edit: For those who may not know, the Zune HD has the new Tegra processor in it along with HD radio, OLED, games & apps, social, zune pass, and a slew of other things that I am not going to bother mentioning...

Apple once again walks around with it's nose in the air saying it's shit smells better.

Didn't we already see this kinda bullshit when apple tried to beat on Microsoft? I don't get this whole superiority complex Mac has been trying to get at but they've obviously lost the memo where no one gives a shit.

They need to just stick to marketing to impressionable hipster dipshits.

OK,

I have a iTouch, a PSP and a DS.

while Apple handheld has ten times more games, most of them are of them are equally shit being
copycatcopies of games concepts that have been worn out 20 years ago.
And the biggest downfall is that most programmers give a shit about the outstanding "touchscreen only" interface possibilities of the iTouch. So some control-interfeces just don´t work here.

BUT there are some serioulsy good music making applications on the iTouch you can only dream about on PSP and DS.

Some other productivty and learining apps help me through the day of serious work.
What the iTouch lacks in quality it boosts in versatility.

But this concepts will not hold forever. And the app store IS Killer,
The PSP store and the DS Store are so boring and essentially void of interessting content because S and N hold on to their "QA-system" like it´s the end of the world.
And now talk about the frustation of bringing indie apps the PSP and DS stores.

We will see AAA titles and pricing coming to the iphone but it will take a while.

so Nintendo and Sony shouldn´t be so sure about their position in the market.

and YES the Apple Arrogance IS shit as much as Sony and Nintendo NEVER dissapointed their customers.

c'mon apple lol do you really think after all the let downs you can stand against the two top companys on the market i mean the original i pods where ok the nanos sure but then saying your new thing would revolutionise music and giveing us the same nanos in multipul colers and slightly diffrent frames (if no one remembers this disregard) i just dont see nintendo a SPECIALISED company or sony (not quite as specialized but still) giveing in to an apple system that is buttenless
