This has to be a joke? Right...right? Seriously, no. Just no. The man did some influential things in his lifetime, but the biggest gaming influence? That's just laughable.

This survey really means nothing. It was completely unfocused and open ended. Secondly it is news biased. That is what has happened recently/talked about carries more weight.

That said the iphone being on the top spot does make some sense. The advent of portable cheap games like Angry Birds and just the massive library its capable of holding changed portable gaming completely. Of course there are other devices that happened around the same time and do similar things, but the iphone is the most well known.

Steve Jobs #1 on the most influential people (or even on it) doesn't sit well with me. He didn't do much if anything for gaming himself. His focus was also never on gaming. The iphone sort of snowballed into the roll based on the app market. He himself didn't actually do much except be the CEO of the company that sold the iphone.

Long story short: The iphone actually deserves a spot/mention in the top 5 (perhaps not #1). To be fair I would say smartphones rather than just the iphone as they all did/do the same thing. The iphone just so happened to be very popular in its advent. Steve Jobs did nothing for gaming himself, and thus deserves no mention.

They really need to re-run this survey once the apple sympathy crap goes away. I mean, if anything, if you're talking about OS development companies, Bill Gates did far more than Apple ever did for the gaming industry. Hell, Linux even has a stronger user base than iOS.

They seriously voted the guy that wouldn't even allow flash on a damn phone as influential in gaming? Yeah maybe because he forced developers to find workarounds to their overly limiting restrictions in the name of protecting corporate profits.

What the hell did this survey look like?

How has Steve Jobs done more than Shigeru Miyamoto?
How has he done more than Gaben?

Erm, I don't know about you guys, but when I think of gamings biggest triumphs, I don't think of Steve Jobs or apple...

I think of Steam, and Gabe Newell... I think of Sony and Microsoft, Nintendo, Sega, all that jazz. NOWHERE on that list would I have ever in a million years thought Apple...

Sucking up to his death a bit?
Of coarse you don't think of apple, remember there console?

Yeah...

They did nothing. yes, they created a platform that makes it easy to copy/paste flashgames, but that's it.
I seriously take offense to this.

No one who has made a game on the Iphone really poured their heart and soul into it, no one. Jobs didn't even make games, he made a computer, and then oversaw a bunch of other people.

And yes, these guys must be major suckups.

I believe that honor goes to the Xbox 360, since just about every multiplatform PC game for the past 6 years has been a crappy 360 port.

And as for the people poll. Steve Jobs hated games. He went on an hour long tirade with Ron Gilbert, telling him that you can't tell a story in a game.
Where's Sid Meier in that poll, heck, where's Garriot or Peter Molyneux?

This poll is rigged, rigged I tell you!
I'm sorry, fact check. Especially lending to how games are made, most 360 games are PC ports. Games for Windows. The rest of your post is spot on.

Just like how eevery pop star and their mom tries to compare their looks and dance moves to Mick Jagger despite him being an ugly dude who can't dance. Sing? Yeah he can do that, like how Jobs came up with some innovative product ideas, but crediting him with inspiring the game industry is like saying Jagger danced better than Michael Jackson. Our society just doesn't remember anything before the nineties.

"According to industry professionals"

It's pretty much widely know that most "professionals" from any industries have absolutely no idea what's better for the user.(Example? DRM) I mean, "professional" doesn't even mean good. It means getting money for doing something. Heck, if I get 5 bucks from my neighbor for cutting his lawn, I'm a professional lawncutter. Not that it means anything at all.

How can they even name Jobs as a influence in the gaming industry if he doesn't have any connection to it? Ok, he made the graphical interface for PC, but that's hardly a influence, he probably played on arcades when he was in university. His company made the Iphone? Yeah, but Iphone can hardly be considered a "important" gaming station. It's very welcoming to Indie companies, but it's so goddamn overrated. Let's take one as example. Angry birds. It's a good game? Yeah, the controls are good, and its addicting. The art direction is nice, and the game does looks good. But before the Iphone was even launched, there were probably hundreds of flash games with the EXACTLY SAME GAMEPLAY.

Jobs is a great man, but I hardly find he a influence bigger than Miyamoto or Gabe.

....This poll seems a little...skewed.

I have to see as a lot of people more influential on gaming than Mr. Jobs. Maybe his com-any helped create something to make it more accessible, but that's about it on his end.

He died recently. Most people don't even know who Miyamoto or Newell are or their accomplishments.

Wow, the most retarded list I've ever seen - 'gaming professionals'? They'd have bee more likely to get an accurate list, if they did a 50/50 chance tournament, conducted by a seal selecting which picture on which slice of fish he wanted to have.

Wii? Xbox Live?

Where's the GameBoy? The Nintendo Entertainment System? 1 of those 5 were right, the Playstation, but even the Dreamcast should have some mention, since two generations later the consoles haven't really moved that far beyond it.

Apple 2E was more influencial than the iPhone. What a bogus article hey?

This is a really terrible poll. Steve Jobs did little for gaming. He didn't have anything to do with games at all. The iPhone is able to play games and that's about as far as Steve Jobs' influence on gaming goes. Some one like American McGee has had more effect on gaming.

I can see where they're coming from. The smartphone did usher in a whole lot of creativity and innovation that had hitherto been only seen on indie PC game scene. Stuff like Angry Birds certainly made the medium a great deal more accessible and attractive. That said, it seems downright odd to omit John Carmack. It would be interesting to see their exact criteria and reasoning.

Recently yes he probably deserves to be in the top 10 of most influential people in Gaming despite his hatred for it but of all time no he shouldn't be in the top ten. Then as someone said this was done at a convention for handhelds so the bias is understandable.

I am not surprised.

Biased survey is biased.

Survey is not legitimate. Tell me how Wii, xbox live, PS1, iPhone, and Steam are directly comparable? The iPhone probably opened up video gaming to more people, but the Wii did that as well. Please people. This is a poor survey.

Of course the iPhone and Steve Jobs are at the top of the list, just look at all they have given us.
Thanks to the iPhone, we now have a device with which we can play games using a touchscreen!
Oh...wait...nevermind, the Nintendo DS came out three years earlier.
But they gave us a big digital distribution service from which we could buy games!
What's that you say? Steam came out four years before the iPhone?
Well, they still game us a device on which you can play games on the go! What's that? Game and Watch? Well it can't be that old, I mean, it probably came out way back in the year 2000.
What's that? 1980, you say?...

Huh.

Well how the fuck did it get voted first place?

I have the same opinion about why Jobs won as everyone else. Not much to add to discussion, is there?

Ok, now where is "Browser Games" with a %25?

I know Apple HAS had an influence on gaming, but I think the reason for this poll being the way it is, is less about Apple being a gaming giant and more about the fact that most people already HAVE an Iphone and the games were immediately available.

Also, "Industry Professionals"? You mean the guys who repeatedly predict gaming about as accurately as weather casters?
Hey, give weathermen SOME credit.

I think it's safe to say we all agree that Steve Jobs being the number 1 most influential person is...unlikely. Therefore, I choose to look at the rest of the results.

Hm, Newell more influential than Miyamoto? I'd argue in favor of Mario, Zelda, and the entirety of consoles if we're looking long term positive influence. But Steam is definately more influential in recent years, popularizing digital distribution. That said, Wii uses motion controles, and then suddenly the other consoles do too...
