Why is this news... Apple announces a new iPhone every other week. It's like a law of nature, fish swim, birds fly, new iPhone comes out.

I am proudly a non-Apple territory, so I am glad to say that I could not care less for any Apple release.

Overpriced and suboptimal products made for those who value design above ALL else.

This just in: Apple likes your money.

I think I'm one of the few lepers in a first world country that still has a regular phone and an old ipod nano I received as a gift...

probably the same damn thing!
with the exception of the outward appearance and a second camera THERE ISN'T A DAMN THING DIFFERENT BETWEEN THE 3GS AND 4!
besides all that extra power isn't going to do anything if you block homebrew and limit third party stuff.
Retina display says what. LED flash, autofocus, HD recording, gyro, mic noise suppression, longer battery, facetime, etc
So, it's a shiny display with a camera, a mic that most other phones have had for years and a face-chat that only works with other Apple stuff? Yeah, that's fantastic...

I'll stick with my X10, thanks.

LED flash? Like my 3 year old phone that was already outdated when I bought it?
Autofocus? You mean the thing that has been integrated to every camera made in the last 6 years?
HD recording...please,recording in higher definition has never been a problem. They could have done it on the original iphone if they wanted it.
Mic noice suppression?News flash, all it takes for that is a script running behind the recording program.Teamspeak,Mumble and Ventrillo have had this feature for years.

I could go on,but you get the idea.Nothing they're doing is new. They're slightly improving last year's device by adding shit they could have added from the start, and overpricing it.

Both iphone and android should be given credit for their fair share of innovation over the years. Remember there was a time when Android was playing catch up too in terms of features. You also need to remember that without the iPhone, we probably wouldnt have the wide range of operating systems available today, the phone market would be very different.

Give the iPhone credit where its due.

Im hoping they announce a new ipod touch alongside.

My current (2nd gen) ipod touch's volume buttons have started to be annoying, as well as the power button... and its also completely full, to the point where ive had to delete stuff to get anything on new it :/
i need a new one, and id be happy to jump straight to the 5th gen. Its a great MP3 player and ive never regretted buying it.

Buying a new iphone every year though? there doesnt seem enough reason to... you have to think what your £300/whatever is actually giving you, that you dont already have.

OK. I'm pretty attached to my phone...I actually sleep with it nearby incase it rings. (It's a BlackBerry, for the record. Not an iPhone.)

But do people really need a new phone every year?

Wow the rumored specifications sound great, right on par with a number of the android phones that came out last year for only twice the price, that's a steal for an apple product!

Sure the iPhone was released and made a huge splash due to brilliant marketing of overpriced hardware in a minimalist case after coming into an already diverse smartphone marketplace about 15 years into the life cycle of the smartphone industry. Furthermore, if anything their business strategy of attempting to stall and stifle competition through constant patent suits, intentional non-compatibility, restrictive development policies (like only officially sanctioning use of the sdk within a mac environment), and similar chicanery would have reduced market diversity and advancement if it been successful. I don't see any way in which apple contributed to any advancement in the market outside of advertising strategies.

also never gonna buy an iPhone, because they just don't get any better considering their technical core and marketing problems.

YAY! Another slight upgrade to phone that by now others have done bettter! Now I finally get to lay down another few hundred quid to use it, and take it out of my pocket every other minute just to show off!

This thing is going to fly off the shelves just like all the others, because Apple fanboys are idiots. They seem to buy every iteration when there's next to no difference. Apple themselves are smart, though. They have such a devoted fan base they get to screw them over every year and get away with it. It's like a businessman's wet dream.

Just release a Touch with a 3G contract similar to the Kindle already! I don't want to text using a touch screen, but it would sure be handy to be able to access the web without having WiFi!

still in my daily use I NEVER noticed a big difference between my new 4 and old 3GS
