Well, iCult, I mean Apple, is nothing if not predictable. Apple does this for all of their yearly hardware revisions of every product. The simple fact that this announcement is taking place is not news, nor is the iPhone5 announcement news. iOS5 is feature complete, and most of its features are out in the wild in the official beta builds, so that is not news either. So then what is the news? The reason that they need to put out new, more powerful hardware, and as far as the tech scutttlebutt is going, that thing is the one thing they haven't talked about or shown in the iOS5 beta, Voice Control. Is this news? No. Do people thinks its news? Yes. Why? Again, tech scuttlebutt, that it will be on-device decoding of voice data. Again, another feature that Android has had for awhile now, though Android does it through Google's cloud servers instead of on-device. This is plus and minus for both, but again, this is not news.
***** and moan we can, and nothing will change, just give them your money or not. Its the same thing that happened in the NES/SNES era with videogames. Sure, SEGA was around, but videogames were "Nintendo" until the PS1 came along. Just like now where Android exists, and combined has sold more units than iPhones, but smartphones are "iPhones". Grand scheme, I have invested in iOS (2nd gen iPod Touch) and in Android (Samsung Galaxy S Fascinate), and between the two, Android won out for me. Why? Because Doggcatcher is better for dealing with podcasts than iTunes. In the future, short of a massive f---up on Android, or iOS/iTunes learning how to deal with podcasts properly, I will probably stick with Android (please let Nexus Prime hit Verizon).
But in all truth, and I realize this probably won't happen, I just want smartphones to stop being "iPhones" and start being "smartphones". Because the combination of both euphoria and outrage these announcements cause is tiring. Well, that and I am against organized religions.
