Explorations part I loved, shoot out and generic lightning/mixing abilities not so much, did seem quite scripted, the use of telekinesis blew my mind, not sure about the talking character, not sure about the AI girl following around but by the looks of it it's make for some cinematic ability usage, and thinking about how it might be scary or creepy if you can tear everything to shreds.

Can't wait to see more.

I think you linked to the wrong trailer, Tom. Isn't this supposed to be for a new game?
Ouch. But... Yeah. Rather than being a new game in the Bioshock series, it looks more like Bioshock 1 from an alternate universe, where 2K had gone down the list of "weird places to put a city" and went with "in the sky" rather than "under the sea".

That's not to say it doesn't look like a good game; it will most likely be a servicable shooter with excellent atmosphere, a refreshingly unusual aesthetic, and a fairly interesting story. But it's a known quantity. There's nothing myserious about it. We know what we're going to get: more Bioshock. I'm glad they're making more Bioshock, sure, and I will enjoy playing more Bioshock, but I can't work up much interest in something when I know exactly what it's going to be.

Are there any good reasons to believe this is really GAMEPLAY footage?
I call bullshit; none of this footage was actual gameplay.

This is just a pre-renderd cinematic to show off the concept to the producers and investors. Much like how the first footage of Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway was all staged.

Not that I'm not digging the whole castle in the sky concept, but this trailer shows us absolutely zero amount of actual gameplay.

Can someone explain to me why everyone thinks this looks so good?

I mean, at first I thought it was cool. The character is just slowly walking through the town lying in ruin. You see a few people who are clearly broken mentally, but unlike in Bioshock they don't instantly try and tear your face off. It really creates a good atmosphere.

Then you pick up the gun, and the game does a U-turn. It goes from unnerving to over-the-top goofiness. Suddenly the entire populace is trying to kill you. A guy starts firing mortars at you and is destroying the city in the process (what possible purpose were these mortar launchers supposed to serve?). Then you slide through the sky in a ridiculous scene complete with gratuitous slow-mo (LOOK HOW COOL THIS IS). In the end, Big Daddy batman shows up and hopefully kidnapped your spunky sidekick, since AI controlled "companions" can go die in a fire. She may have done fine in that video, but that's because you were running through one big scripted event by the look of things.

I just don't get what is so great about this. It had a good setup, and I was really interested in seeing where they were going to go with it. But the very second you touched a gun the whole thing devolved into insanity. I really want to like this game, but each time I see something I might like it is ruined.

Oh yeah, that's what I thought when I saw her up close as well. Her eyes seem abnormally large.
I feel more or less the same. Oh, and the mortars are basically there to intimidate other nations. Columbia is a symbol of the US's might. It was constructed by the government, and a flying city would make a great weapon, especially when airplanes aren't really big yet. Although that begs the question of how the protagonist got up there in the first place.

And that girl is clearly an anime character. Or something.

Wow. I can't believe that it's all gameplay. I havnt seen a trailer that got me this excited since that half-life trailer they released years ago.

Wait, airplane technology isn't advanced in this universe? That doesn't make any sense. How do you get flying cities without advancing airplanes? That would be like building Rapture when submarines are primitive.

EDIT: Anyone who thinks that was actually gameplay is lying to themselves. That was just a huge collection of scripted events, probably with a bunch of mini cut-scenes spliced in. For example, that "Charles" guy apparently drops a plasmid upon being killed, yet the video makes it look like you can knock him over the edge. If you knocked him over the edge in any other place, you wouldn't be able to access the plasmid he drops. Therefore that entire sequence has to be a cutscene, otherwise it would mess with gameplay.

Also it really feels like this was made by two different people. After 3:20 it becomes radically different.

I normally don't give into an unreleased game based on one neat looking video.

"For us, BioShock has never been about a city," Levine says. Taken straight from an interview with the creative director. He's right, it wasn't the fact that it was a city at the bottom of the ocean that made it interesting. It was the art direction, the Objectivist viewpoints, and the fact that something sinister was going on behind the scenes that made Rapture memorable. If those three major points didn't apply to Rapture, they might as well have named the city "Atlantis." And your Axl Rose ego comment is just plain stupid, his ego is what turned me off the band completely and makes me hate the band even more.
Then why did they feel the need to do the exact same thing over again but with the word "sea" changed to "sky". Being under the sea wasn't the best bit about Rapture, you're right there and that was my point - Bioshock could be set in the middle of London and still capture that essence that made Rapture so interesting. Which is why I think Columbia is missing the point of the original so much. At this point it's "another city in a weird place" rather than a collection of attitudes and ideologies drenched in atmosphere.
That and the fact that it looks absolutely ridiculous.
As for Axl Rose, that's simply a matter of you love it or you hate it and we've clearly fallen on opposite lines.
The game still has about two more years of development time on its hands, that was pretty much a tech demo. How were they supposed to show any of what I just mentioned in a ten minute video? Hell, you don't even fully understand Bioshock's ideology until the second or third level.

Eh, true enough I guess.

Then again as the one guy said, there's also hot air balloons, and possibly zeppelins.

(Watches trailer.)

Sooo... "gameplay" means "running and playing with your scope a bit"? 'Cause all I saw was a lot of first-person cutscenes with a guy running between them and maybe shooting the wrong guys a bit. And I'll believe that until the game comes out unless they release a second trailer soon where the protagonist behaves completely differently and the engine doesn't implode. (Snipes the crazy guy with the guns earlier so he doesn't fire the big gun, avoids the bar area completely, uses the crow attack instead of relying on his partner's storm or nuclear frying pan attacks, etc.)

i dont know, it may be stupid but i couldnt enjoy bioshock 2 because of the frustratingly little ammo anywhere, then the drill had about 3 seconds of drilling until it runs out so i had to constantly melee everything and that put me off this when i heard about it. Having never played the first bioshock i have no idea what the think to the games on a whole so i can only judge based on what i have seen on bioshock 2. Hopefully this will be much different to bioshock 2 as im assured by others that it will be but i dont know yet. by the sounds of it ill have a long time to decide; when does this come out?
Don't worry, no one liked Bioshock 2.

Hell, I don't even think 2k mentions it all that much in interviews, etc.

Kinda funny actually.
...I liked Bioshock 2...

OT, that trailer was such glorious win. I can't wait for this game. Though I think tandem is the ONLY way that big... big... BIG Daddy is going down.
