I love Protestants protesting to keep "Christ" in Christmas while only the Catholics are keeping the "mass" in Christmas.
It certainly has some Christian roots, (though as others have pointed out, the Mithran and Solstice roots go deeper) but I don't really feel Christianity is the focus for most people.
If nothing else, I think everyone knows that even if there was a Jesus, his birthday, as given in the bible, is certainly not mid-December. The sole reason the holiday occurs in December was to help co-op Mithras worshipers into Christianity. i

Well, like I've said before on X-mas posts:
Christmas is what you make of it, and I think that's awesome.
People can really use it as a day to come together for all kinds of different reasons.
My family just uses it as another excuse to get together and spend some time with one another.
If we can. Having presents was never really an issue. If you can't afford it, or refuse
to give any, we don't really care. XD
Whether or not you want to celebrate it and make it apart of your life religiously
(even though we all know it's Pagan), is up to you and yours.
Food, presents (or not, some don't give presents), or just treating it like any other
day.

Because the solstice was also once a religious day. And everything about christmas is stolen by christianity. Just like the rest of their holidays. I am an atheist, my family isn't. I use the name of the day so they have something recognizable to call the day. Just because I don't follow your fairy tail doesn't mean that I can't enjoy a family gathering and a feast.zehydra said:
I agree. Christmas has become more commercialised over the years. Remember when Coca-Cola nearly bought Santa Claus? Although Santa Claus is not a christian symbol for christmas, we've still incorperated it into our yearly celebration because it's what everyone else does. My family isn't religious, but we celebrate christmas (Family, Food, and Presents). I guess it's because we originate from a christian culture, so we celebrate easter too (the chocolate bunny kind, not the zombie-Jesus kind).
I hate people that bring up this stupid topic, the Christmas that we celebrate these days has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with the christian Christmas, what we celebrate is a Pagan celebration of the winter solstice, nothing more. In the old testament the giving of gifts was abolished, so Christians really need to get over this whole "Put the Christ back in Christmas" thing, seriously its as much our holiday as it is anyone elsesakibawall95 said:

Yeah it was never about christianity really. It's all pagan, roman whatever a big mix. As an anti-theist I don't really "celebrate" it it's just nice to have a time of year when we give each other presents, makes ya feel good. Let's just pencil that in on the calender and do away with the disgusting religious connections shall we? Generosity Day.

I was raised as a Christian and so my family has always celebrated Christmas. As a child I went to midnight mass every Christmas Eve. Over the years my Christmas has become more and more divorced from the Christian aspects, though admittedly it was always about Santa for me anyway.
It's very true that in the US Christmas is about gifts and maybe about spending time with family, not about Christ.

I'm an atheist and i celebrate christmas because its a time of the year where eeryones together and having a good time i don't care what they call it
EDIT: But the wierd thing is I think I only celebrate it because i live in a christian country and I'm surrounded by others who celebrate it, if I was living in india for example I don't think I would bother

Xmas = spending time with family and friends, getting presents, eating lots of food and getting drunk.
I personally have no feelings one way or another about the religious aspect, but my parents still go to mass. My girlfriend loves christmas (excluding the whole religion thing), especially the whole decorating the xmas tree - I find this hilarious as she's jewish
