In Russia, New Year's Day is far more prominent then Christmas. It's basically our substitute for it.

There's also our national Christmas, the Orthodox one, which is 7th of January (I think) - it's fairly religious and as such, I don't celebrate it.
Yep, I'm Russian as well, and my dad's side of the family is Orthodox. I don't celebrate Christmas though.

See, in Russia, Christmas is a legitimate religious holiday. :p

I love Protestants protesting to keep "Christ" in Christmas while only the Catholics are keeping the "mass" in Christmas.

It certainly has some Christian roots, (though as others have pointed out, the Mithran and Solstice roots go deeper) but I don't really feel Christianity is the focus for most people.

If nothing else, I think everyone knows that even if there was a Jesus, his birthday, as given in the bible, is certainly not mid-December. The sole reason the holiday occurs in December was to help co-op Mithras worshipers into Christianity. i

Well, like I've said before on X-mas posts:
Christmas is what you make of it, and I think that's awesome.

People can really use it as a day to come together for all kinds of different reasons.
My family just uses it as another excuse to get together and spend some time with one another.
If we can. Having presents was never really an issue. If you can't afford it, or refuse
to give any, we don't really care. XD

Whether or not you want to celebrate it and make it apart of your life religiously
(even though we all know it's Pagan), is up to you and yours.

Food, presents (or not, some don't give presents), or just treating it like any other
day.

DO WITH IT WHAT YOU WILL MY SPECIAL SNOWFLAKES!

i am an athiest who celebrates the gift and decoration part of christmas (which is the only part most people care about nowadays)

and i wonder if your friends go to church any time around christmas day, or if they just like getting gifts.

It's a Christian holiday. Regardless of what it was in the past, it currently is a Christian holiday (over-commercialized, definitely!) The thing that I don't get is why Atheists celebrate "Christ's mass" instead of say, the solstice or some other secular reason around the same time. Even Santa Claus is based off of the patron saint of Charity.
Because the solstice was also once a religious day. And everything about christmas is stolen by christianity. Just like the rest of their holidays. I am an atheist, my family isn't. I use the name of the day so they have something recognizable to call the day. Just because I don't follow your fairy tail doesn't mean that I can't enjoy a family gathering and a feast.

Aside from it being over comercialized, another big reason why atheists celebrate Christmas might be because they grew up with it. Certainly the reason i refer to it as Christmas is because that's what i'm used to and also because people tend to understand faster then if you say "happy winter solstice." Honestly, though aside from the name there never was much "christian" about Christmas.
I agree. Christmas has become more commercialised over the years. Remember when Coca-Cola nearly bought Santa Claus? Although Santa Claus is not a christian symbol for christmas, we've still incorperated it into our yearly celebration because it's what everyone else does. Someone at some point thought of Santa Claus as a symbol and we just stuck with it.

Christian belief encourages hospitality, so it's Christian to allow Atheiests to celebrate Christmas. Atheiests just don't celebrate the Christian aspect of the holiday.

While I know christmas is nothing about religion anymore, I cant help to find it ironic when the Jews celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ :)

My family isn't religious, but we celebrate christmas (Family, Food, and Presents). I guess it's because we originate from a christian culture, so we celebrate easter too (the chocolate bunny kind, not the zombie-Jesus kind).

I think Christmas is no longer just a religious holiday I believe in god but I know several atheists who celebrate X-mas and some of my other Christian friends do not think they should be celebrating if they do not believe in Christ but I believe it has gone past that to just a holiday to come together and show each other we care.
I hate people that bring up this stupid topic, the Christmas that we celebrate these days has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with the christian Christmas, what we celebrate is a Pagan celebration of the winter solstice, nothing more. In the old testament the giving of gifts was abolished, so Christians really need to get over this whole "Put the Christ back in Christmas" thing, seriously its as much our holiday as it is anyone elses

Well I'm an Atheist but if you show me part of the best bits of Christianity, Good will, giving, and generally an excuse to make merry. Just because I don't believe in a God doesn't mean those aren't things I can get behind.

Christmas was never originally about Christianity they just Hi-Jacked it. Besides why the hate on the atheists and Celebrating Christmas remember "Turn The Other Cheek" not to mention any Christian who has a problem with me Celebrating it getting together, having a good time and all that good stuff can kiss my rear end.

Yeah it was never about christianity really. It's all pagan, roman whatever a big mix. As an anti-theist I don't really "celebrate" it it's just nice to have a time of year when we give each other presents, makes ya feel good. Let's just pencil that in on the calender and do away with the disgusting religious connections shall we? Generosity Day.

Atheist here. Well I think my beliefs more closely fall under the umbrella of agnosticism, but we'll let that slide for now.

I was raised as a Christian and so my family has always celebrated Christmas. As a child I went to midnight mass every Christmas Eve. Over the years my Christmas has become more and more divorced from the Christian aspects, though admittedly it was always about Santa for me anyway.

It's very true that in the US Christmas is about gifts and maybe about spending time with family, not about Christ.

I'm an atheist and i celebrate christmas because its a time of the year where eeryones together and having a good time i don't care what they call it
EDIT: But the wierd thing is I think I only celebrate it because i live in a christian country and I'm surrounded by others who celebrate it, if I was living in india for example I don't think I would bother

"There are many things from which I might have derived good, by which I have not profited, I dare say, Christmas among the rest. But I am sure I have always thought of Christmas time, when it has come round, -- apart from the veneration due to its sacred origin, if anything belonging to it can be apart from that, -- as a good time; a kind, forgiving, charitable, pleasant time; the only time I know of, in the long calendar of the year, when men and women seem by one consent to open their shut-up hearts freely, and to think of people below them as if they really were fellow-travellers to the grave, and not another race of creatures bound on other journeys. And therefore, Uncle, though it has never put a scrap of gold or silver in my pocket, I believe that it has done me good, and will do me good; and I say, God bless it!"

Xmas = spending time with family and friends, getting presents, eating lots of food and getting drunk.
I personally have no feelings one way or another about the religious aspect, but my parents still go to mass. My girlfriend loves christmas (excluding the whole religion thing), especially the whole decorating the xmas tree - I find this hilarious as she's jewish
