Pardon me for not being familiar with Australian politics (as I am an Amurican) but is Atkinson in an an office that can be ran against anytime soon? Or is his position more akin to a Supreme Court Justice type thing where he can hang out until he's too old to find his way to work? It seems pretty obvious that civil discussion and... harsher methods... aren't really having any effect.

so does this mean that the majority of people in australia don't care about violence in games and the majority of those who do care think it's okay... essentially this means that Atkinson is shamelessly doing what the minority wants and even admitting to it.

In the words of George Carlin
"SHUT THE FUCK UP!, SHUT THE FUCK UP!, SHUT THE FUCK UP!"

I can only hope the local gamers efforts to get someone else elected to replace Atkinson succeed. Or at least is enough of a threat to realize the gamers of Australia are getting tired of being condescended to by a self-appointed 'moral guardian'. He's kind of like Jack Thompson, except Atkinson has power to actually do something with his views.

Can an Australian tell me how popular he is with the public of Australia? In general, I mean, not just in the context of games?
He is unknown. Only gamers annoyed by him blocking an update to the classifications know he exists. In the US he would be a senator in a small state's government (not a federal senator in Congress).

He has been the elected representative for the district of 'Croydon' in South Australia since 2002.

Croydon has ~20,000 registered voters (voting is compusory in Australia, fines are issued to registered voters who fail to vote).

~13,000 (~67%) voted for Atkinson in 2006.

The next election should be early this year, 20 March 2010 is predicted.

If you want to contact him, his phone and email are on his web page.

He just confirmed everyone's point. It not that the only people who care are gamers, ALL the people who care are gamers. When will he understand that no one agrees with him and that his is abusing his authority?

So if the general public don't care about video gaming, and the people that do care want one thing, doesn't that whole democracy thing say that you have to choose the side who care enough to say something. I mean if the silent majority remain silent, than they obviously don't care and they can be discounted?

I'd rather have a vocal minority than a silent majority.

Because gamers started the whole thing by talking nasty about his family. It couldn't have been Atkinson who started it by saying gamers are nothing but deprived criminals and banning every game under the sun, now could it?

But you know, it will be interesting to know how many people show up for the debate. A large number of people would indicate there are more than just "gamers" who care about this sort of thing. And will he even be attending? If not, that shows he is an old fogey who is stuck in his way, so much so that he can't see the world beyond the tip of his nose.

While he is an idiot, he makes a good point about the gamers who threaten him and his family. Threats and harassment DO NOT HELP THE CAUSE. It's not like this is some tiny personal squabble where the other person can be intimidated to back down. This is big time, with the media looking over everyone's shoulder, and so the people who threaten him are just handing him the ammunition.

It does kind of sound like he is saying only people who don't play video games have an important opinion about them. It's like saying only a hobo has important opinions about home economics and all things involving a house, since he doesn't own one.
I will say though, it was a very stupid idea to threaten him. That really only gives him evidence to say video games cause violent people. I don't agree with that statement, but threatening him over those laws really only helps him.

Is there any other issue that a minority of people care about and the rest couldn't care less? Of course! There's animal rights issues, individual industries have issues to bring to the government, there are lobby groups for all sorts of things, many of which the majority couldn't give a toss about, but they're still issues that need to be discussed. Also, why is he so passionately campaigning against this if the majority don't care?

Yes, the kind of thing you see in movies all the time...what makes this so different?

STOP THREATENING HIM, YOU IDIOTS. Australia and a good part of the world have their eye on this, and this idiot is going to use your threats as leverage to keep good games out of legality.

IF YOU ARE A FUCKING MORON WITH YOUR TINY DICK AND YOUR BRAIN SWITCHED AROUND, KEEP THREATENING ATKINSON. GO ON, DIPSHITS. DO IT.
