Oh god, the only good thing is that he might just give it up and kick the bucket soon enough.

That bastard.
We Americans wished that about Dick Cheney for EIGHT YEARS.
Then again, at least Atkinson isn't Satan.

Please I seriously doubt that it's respectable gamers threatening his family more than Chavtastic little fuckwits who enjoy making a bad situation worse.

For everyone in this thread who's not Australian, Atkinson is one State's Attorney General, he's not a federal politician. The problem is for the R18+ rating to be implemented, it needs the approval of the Attorney General of each state, which he is refusing to give, all the others have indicated they are in favour of better classification along the lines of movies.
Who the hell made that rule up? Whatever happened to "Majority Rules"?

This is really insane. Here's hoping there are brighter days ahead for Australian Gamers.

Looks like he thinks the country care when they don't.

Honestly, if he's the ONLY one willing to fight for a "No R+18 game" then he should damn well admit the country is able to handle it.

You lost, now do something useful.

Heaven forbid those likely to get affected by such changes want to vote on it. That's got to be "unfair".

So, you'll consider it and then finish it anyway. Is it any wonder that people believe you really don't care about those involved and simply seek to fulfill your own opinion, no matter what the public think?

Given that the threats against you are real and not just something you've made up, why do you think they've been made?

I'm sorry for that Mr. Atkinson I thought you were older than five. I'm almost certain that hypocrisy is the only way that most politicians are able to stay were they are. I understand a need to take care of those who are susceptible to the effects of these kinds of games but if the parents are letting their children play them maybe we should look at a taking their children away. Oh hang on, didn't you say that you let your under-age son play Grand Theft Auto. Someone's not practising what they preach. Then again why should that get in the way of a good platform to keep your political career alive on.

Actually it would need to be a state election and unfortunately here the premier of the state picks his cabinet from members of the parliament, not from outside with congressional support like in the US (at least nationally, I have no idea about the US state government system.) Anyway, that means that unless the government are voted out or he is voted out of his seat Atkinson never has to leave and will always have a strong voice in Parliament. Also keep in mind that the South Australian government is currently the more left wing of the two parties, so as a left winger I'm conflicted, is it better if the Liberals (the more right wing party) get in and approve the rating but support policy I don't or if Labor (the party Atkinson belongs to but I generally support more) though I shouldn't be (if the Greens got more of the vote this wouldn't be a problem), oh well I live in Victoria anyway and luckily we have a responsible Attorney-General who approved a 10 story apartment building where legally buildings cannot be above four blocking the sunset to the local park which was built so that everyone would get a spectacular view of the sunset, but I'm rambling.

This guy's political actions resemble a 5 year old given a senate seat. Seriously though why can't we just get a few people to talk with him in a civilized manner or something.

I would like to complain about two things.

Firstly that the refusal of the creation of an R18+ was unfair because only politicians where involved. And even then only one was against it.

And secondly he seems to assume that gamers are only gamers and nothing else. I think his mind will be blown when he discovers that some gamers are parents as well. And i don't think he is aware that the Australian public is almost entirely made up of gamers in some way. I dont know anyone who doesn't own at least one console.

Even if I don't like him, he's got a point there. A lot of gamers are making us look bad by acting stupid and sending death threats, which is illegal by the way even if you feel the holy protection of the net, and it does nothing to help our cause, quite the opposite.
So I think people should try to be more mature (real mature, not "it got boobs" mature) and stop telling how much they want to punch or kill him.

Kinda funny: I have Hellsing Ultimate episode 2 playing on my TV and when I read "blood spatter" one of the guards outside the Hellsing mansion got shot and blood shot out of his head.
I'm sorry guys. He's a dick.

I'm sure they tried. Also, what he is basically saying is "I may stop violating your freedom and imposing my personal infallible (of course) code of morality on you, but only if you ask nicely". I don't know, when officials said similar things in the past, the public response involved a lot of nooses and sharp objects.

Okay. I'm going to regret saying this, but at this point, Atkinson is not just fighting gamers: He's fighting Anonymous. And you know what happens to people who fight Anonymous...Remeber the kid who tried to take Anonymous down?
They ruined his LIFE, man. Then again, they do that to hundreds of people every day.

To quote Yhatzee:
"His ancient, black, dried up little heart still strives to keep him alive in the face of searing waves of hatred being broadcast to him from all parts of the nation and the entire world every second of every day. Well done you miserable old fuck."

that's essentially akin to america saying to the world "Obama plans to stop the war in Iraq as soon as Bin Ladin, Alqueda and any other terrorists/terror groups/extremists stop trying to kill us first" the man needs to fucking wake up . . . the REASON they keep threatening him is because he keeps making such extreme judgements on something it's been PROVEN he himself has a loose (at best) hold on.
