can't we just KILL michael attkinson, PLEASE!?!
It no long has anything to do with him, he's not even in office.

Looks like we're goign to have to wait for a generation of lying idiotic politicians to die off before we can have our Civil Liberties back, for now we'll just have to live with being treated like children by our government and just enjoy turning into communist China.
still...... and what SO bad about "communist china"?
Uh, its too early in the morning to explaining commmunism.

Read http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_censorship_in_the_People's_Republic_of_China for starters, and realize the Australian government is moving to implement a firewall of our own(not as bad AT FIRST), but its the first step down a very bad road.
to......what?
A lot more censorship.

Well then why the hell did they bother with the consultation just to throw out the results?

I'll tell you why, it's not the results those censorship addicted pigs want.

Like-minded people group together. These groups, naturally, share an interest. Therefore, their shared interest is invalid because they are a group.

How does this make sense at all?

What the hell? So things aren't going their way so they decide to postpone the issue until the scales are in their favor? That's a cheap dick move Austrailia.

UGH! This is unexceptable. I'm so glad I don't live in Australia but it still sucks for those guys. They deserve to get the R18+ rating, they shouldn't be forced to accept cut-down versions of the games we yanks get just so their crotchity old man government doesn't suffer a heart attack from seeing a gun that shoots bullets at the people trying to kill you.

What idiotic reasoning. I hope their people give them a complete what-for regarding this.

I don't get why we even need an R18+, every popular game comes through anyway. I bought AvP after the whole 'it being banned' business, and it should have stayed banned so I wouldn't have wasted the money on it.

The government doesn't do things to deliberately to piss off voters, I would like to see them do it properly then just cave into a bunch of angry nerds who need excessive violence and gore. As if a government would ever cave into the opinions of gamers anyway, people who waste their time playing computer games instead of living in the real world.

All in all I don't care, I have only played the one game for years now anyway. This debate was funny when Michael Atkinson was doing it because it gave nerds an enemy, but now its just boring.
I.E why most Australians do not give a damn.

Step 5 - Holy crap, 86% of over 50,000 people want this mature rating thing. Well, um.. I guess maybe we should...
Actually nearly 98% of responses were in favour of it. 86% of responses came from EB Games and Grow Up Australia.

I've actually read the summarised report they released and the majority of people who opposed the rating were over the age of 65, politicians from Western Australia or religious groups. All people who don't play video games and have no understanding of the medium.

I hate my country.

"Consultations, by their nature, attract submissions from people who are passionate about the issue," O'Connor said in a statement to GameSpot AU. "Ministers would like to consider other legitimate views from as wide a cross section of the community as possible."

Tranlastion:

"We didn't expect people to give a damn and actually participate in the democratic process because that almost never happens. But since it has happened, we feel like dragging in the opinion of people with less; and perferably *no*, interest in this issue whatsoever.

"We are confident that by doing this we can waste everyones' time until this whole idea gathers dust and is forgotten, so that gamers can return to being a regular political scapegoat for us and a much needed distraction the complete lack of ability to prioritise, rationalise or envision that affects Australia's grossly underpaid public officials.

"We hope gamers learn their lessn and never try to organise themselves as a unified group pursuing one goal in an uncharacteristically dignified manner because you're weird and care about things like fun and that's just not patriotic you sick freedom hating flag burning bastards."

Australia, your government takes the cake for being completely fucking mental. Your worse than my government, and they attacked a country because of WMDs that weren't there. (Oil)

Wow a lot of people want this! Hold on, before you go ordering that pizza let's see what our families might want, even if they're not invited to the party.

Translation: If a lot of people who want it, then why would you go to the people who have no interest/can make no use of this!??!?!
we(Australia) are so mental we attacked listened to George bush and attacked that country with you. just think about that for a second, we listened to GEORGE BUSH. i think we are all just pants on head retarded, or were all smoking pot that day.

EDIT: back on point, i think we can settle this by having a massive country wide counter-strike tournament, and the winner can decide, because they'll have to be better than those assholes

Are they forgetting it's an election year? This could be a great political football for both parties.

I'm a registered voter, woo me goddammit!

Wait wait wait let me get this straight. We were given a deadline to send in submissions and any sent afterwards would be "invalid" of sorts. 98% Of the sent submissions that were within the deadline were in favour oh the the introduction of a R18+ rating. But since they were in favour of a R18+ rating they need to stop it so they can hear the other people that didn't care about it enough to send a submission... Now i may be only 16 but hell even i can tell when someone is obviously trying to dance around the fire on a subject.

As someone who took part in the consultation, I have to say that this sucks. I mean, I would think that only the interest groups deserve to have a say. If no one else gives a shit either way, why does the Government insist on seeking their opinions? Obviously those who care about the issue (gamers and church groups mostly, I expect) had their say, and the gamers outnumber the church group members. In an ideal world, WE WIN! In Australia though, the Government goes back on their word to get the outcome they want. Typical.

Actually using a consultation and not actually caring about the results is pretty common. Not even a year ago NZ had a similar occurrence with one that cost nine million dollars to create and gave a result that everyone already knew - and parliament STILL ignored it.

Oh dear, looks like the 'vocal minority' argument is back. Just goes to prove that we really did elect another John Howard.
