Somehow I'm envisioning the Dilbert boss (with an Oz flag at his desk) wagging his finger at his countrymen and complaining that "You didn't read my mind and gave me the wrong answer!"

can't we just KILL michael attkinson, PLEASE!?!
He's not the problem anymore. It's the idiocy he left in his wake that's the issue at the moment.

I've been pondering how to describe the R18+ fiasco, but I think I finally found something.

Gumperson's Law:
The probability of anything happening is in inverse ratio to its desirability.

"Ok we're gonna consult the public to see whether or not you want an R18 rating."
("Wait what!? They WANT it?! Crap ...")
"Hmm, ok that didn't work, we're gonna try something different now."
("Damn them, get me some people who DON'T want it ... yeah I don't care, FIND them!")

And massive lolling ensues, except for the fact that I'm actually IN this horrendously backward country. Seriously people? Freedom and progressive future is THAT WAY, you're headed toward the middle ages at the moment.

its probabaly because the only people to submit comments were Polar opposites. those strongly against and those strongly for a R18+ rating. they probably want a comment from average joe/jill who dont have vested intrests either way
The problem is that the government wants people who have no opinion on the subject to give their opinion on the subject before they make the a decision, when the person who has no opinion on the subject by definition has no opinion on the subject.

In other words, they are saying "We need to know what opinion the person who has no opinion has before we can allow R18 games!"

It is *beyond* retarded. If people didn't phone in, they don't care. If they don't care, they have no opinion to give you. How hard is that to get?
This eloquently summed up my thoughts on this, so I'm going to steal it :p

It's pretty much what I thought back when Atkinson mentioned that only gamers would respond. Of course gamers are going to be the most vocal, they're the only people who care about this farce of a rating system anyway. It's like asking me whether certain operas should be allowed. I don't give 2 shits about opera, but that doesn't mean I don't want other people to enjoy it.

Hahahaha, well said, well said :) I can't wait to drag myself out of the sorry hole that this country is becoming. That or we could get a government that REPRESENTED THE PEOPLE AND THEIR WISHES perhaps? Maybe we could become a ... wait for it ... wait for it ... a ... DEMOCRACY perhaps?

I know that Michael Atkinson stepped down from the attorney general slot did you replace him with another socialist?

Well then why the hell did they bother with the consultation just to throw out the results?

I'll tell you why, it's not the results those censorship addicted pigs want.
Actually using a consultation and not actually caring about the results is pretty common. Not even a year ago NZ had a similar occurrence with one that cost nine million dollars to create and gave a result that everyone already knew - and parliament STILL ignored it.
I didn't say it wasn't common, just that it was ridiculously stupid.

Step 5 - Holy crap, 86% of over 50,000 people want this mature rating thing. Well, um.. I guess maybe we should...
Actually nearly 98% of responses were in favour of it. 86% of responses came from EB Games and Grow Up Australia.

I've actually read the summarised report they released and the majority of people who opposed the rating were over the age of 65, politicians from Western Australia or religious groups. All people who don't play video games and have no understanding of the medium.

I hate my country.
Right with you. Well, except about hating my country - I just loathe the actions of the hypocrites in charge of censorship. The government should have remembered never to conduct a consultation when they didn't know what the response would be. That's just sloppy work.

Honestly, how much of the opposition is coming from anyone with a remotely relevant opinion? Parents groups, I could understand - although I'd argue that they are simply trying to shirk what should be their own responsibilities. But the actual people dissenting are the ones with the least actual knowledge. They're the type of people who believed the hype about Mass Effect being a virtual porn director's studio.

Heaven forbid that anyone should be able to play a game involving complex moral themes, blood and guts or (shock horror!) anything remotely resembling a sex scene. I understand the concern that so many of the responses came from organised campaigns by EB and Grow Up Australia. Even after taking out the responses from EB, submissions in favour STILL outnumber submissions against by three to one - and that's allowing for the naysayers to organise collectively while denying it to those in favour!

Of course, it *does* get worse for us Aussies (and potentially more amusing for the rest of the world). The opposition party would be even more likely to refuse to introduce an R18+ classification for gaming, since they're even more socially conservative and are led by a conservative Catholic (Tony Abbott) who believes in abstinence as sex education.

I suppose the best option for now is to import PC games from overseas, then. You're SOL as a mature console gamer in Australia.

He stepped down as one of the state Attorneys-General. This was a national consultation. Unfortunately, it's the same political party that's making the decision.

How many gamers do you think would show up at parliament house if there was a protest?

Oh Australia, when will you learn to trust people.

Really, this is just stupid reasoning. You released a survey to gauge opinion, and weren't satisfied with the results? Too many people supported it and the rest don't care?

This is just a big loop of self-fulfilling prophecy: They don't allow 18+ because they don't expect people to care about ratings, they don't listen to uproar because the amount that really don't care didn't vote. They just need to give up on their dated whims of censorship and protecting the children and just let people make decisions for themselves.

Guys, you have to understand this in the broader context of Australian politics at present. The government is trying to introduce an 'internet filter' which is causing a massive, ongoing controversy.

We will also have a federal election within the next year, and the government's approval rating has just plummeted. They are in no hurry to introduce an R18+ rating as any widespread discussion (ie in the general, non hardcore gaming community) may prove to be another distraction they could do without.

Seriously though, I'm just glad we're rid of South Australian Attorney General Michael Atkinson. For one man (out of 21 million of us) to have power of veto over a vote on this matter and the ability to suppress reports and studies at his discretion was a massive abuse of the system and not the way those powers were ever intended to be used.

p.s. who precisely are these 'experts' with whom they will be consulting and why on earth should 'church groups' have any say in the process? We have a thing called separation of Church and State here guys.

Considering we are still in the process of simplifying our on tax system (over 10 years, i've lost count), i can understand why this will take awhile.
