He made the highest grossing film ever. (Sixth if adjusted for inflation)
It tied for most acadamy award nominations (14)
It ties for most wins (11)

And this LOST him credibility? Seriously, what the hell are you on about?
I was referring to his credibleness as a decent filmmaker.
There are traces of something interesting at display in the first Terminator, but that's basically all I can say in favour of Cameron.
His films are in general loud, obnoxious, sentimental, and crude.
As for awards and net gross, these are two completely irrelevant factors.
Pirates of the Caribbean, Star Wars: The Phantom Menace and Transformers are three of the most successful films ever made, financially speaking.
I rest my case.

Never underestimate James Camerons ability to surprise you.
Exactly how I feel. Cameron is a great director and has never handed in a bad movie, I see little reason as to why he would do that now, and with a colossal budget mind you.

I remember that there was a thread a little while ago discussing how terrible District 9 is going to be because the aliens are 'pussies' and wasn't as action-y as it appeared to be when first revealed. I'm pretty sure that the same thing is going to happen here.

I refuse to see this movie. After watching Watchmen, I told myself. If there is ever to be another movie with "blue" creatures in it, I shall not risk burning my eyes yet again. Even though it sounds silly, that is the reason why I shall never see this movie. I still have nightmares ><
But they have nude women in movies all the time. I actually thought it was kind of hot when they had Dr Manhattan on set, Bald Blue was kind of exotic. lol

Not even close to interested. I have no idea what the plot is supposed to be, and while I like action and explosions, I cannot afford to see a crappy, or even mediocre movie.

The movie looked incredibly, and by incredibly I mean INCREDIBLY, generic. Same old story about humans finding resources, local population wants humans to gtfo, humans infiltrate/get captured by local population, sympathize with them and eventually help them stopping/destroying/making peace with the humans. I've seen it so many times before it's not even fun - except that this time it's got even better special effects and the local population are a new race of aliens.

So no, it'll be yet another standard Hollywood film and while it might be entertaining, I doubt it'll be a 'masterpiece'. Not storywise, anyway - maybe effectswise.

Or are you feeling a bit cynical and thinking it's gonna be Fern Gully meets Pocahontas in space?
More like Atlantis: The Lost Empire, only above-ground and with superior technology. That's how I view it.

...and you say this like it's bad?

What's wrong with being loud, obnoxious, sentimental and crude?

Art does not have to be deep or subtle to be enjoyable.

I'm excited mostly because this is James Cameron and with the exception of Titanic and Piranha part 2: the Spawning he's proved a competant director. Besides the CGI and scenery look beautiful.
Honestly I'm hopeful.

Just got my tickets for the preview showing tomorrow night and am feeling rather excited.

Are the Escapists feeling the hype? Do you think it will be up there with T2 and Aliens?

Or are you feeling a bit cynical and thinking it's gonna be Fern Gully meets Pocahontas in space?
Well, Lucas style CGI combined with director everyone will be afraid to warn if the project begins to look awful, plus a culture swap love story ... no. Its going to be a mess.

not really, actually. i think the budget is too much. District 9 is one of my favorite movies ever, and it was made on only 25 million.

i think this is way overhyped, but i havent seen it yet, so i cant really tell.

Now maybe this is because I was young (and music-crazy, curse you disney!) enough to be hypnotized by those movies when they came out but that sounds friggin brilliant! If that were an accurate synopsis I would go see the movie, no question. Only I'm imagining the hot fairy girl whose name I've since completely forgotten with a laser gun. Or, alternately, some sort of space mech battle a la gundam wing/seed/whatever.

Well it sure does make alot of people talk about it so yeah I'll go see it maybe with some friends if asked. But the problem I have now is that I read too much into what other people thought, reviews and of course that damn south park episode (funny as it was). But like someone said a few pages back I'll take the yahtzee standpoint and assume it's shit until proven otherwise.

Curious yes, psyched no not really.

But something tell's me the story will seem familar; but I'll enjoy it.

Eh, it looks good, but most of my hype was stolen when I found out the Avatar: The Last Airbender movie was actually next summer. I'm looking forward to that one a heck of a lot more.

I was sceptical, but then i thought: It's James Cameron, so it's gonna have at least SOMETHING i will like.

And as for the "Dances with Wolves" Plot...well, yeah, he plays it safe i guess. I am pretty sure Jim wasn't really interested in telling a story but to bring this fictional planet he invented, Pandora, to life. But since a documentary about a fictional planet makes no sense, he puts it all into a plot that generally works with the public (see "The Last Samurai" for reference) and is..."safe".

And as for me, i'll just hope to get top-notch, epic eye-candy action without having to put up with the utter stupidity that were included in "Transformers 2" or "GI Joe". That would satisfy me.

It's not like i can't watch a film with a actually good story afterwards...

I'm going to go and see it in 3D on Saturday! I actually can't wait, I can't see this as being a BAD film but if I'm wrong I'll admit it after I've passed judgement =P
