Battlefield: Bad Company 2 Invades Sales Charts

EA DICE's Battlefield: Bad Company 2 [http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_i_0_11?url=search-alias%3Dvideogames&field-keywords=battlefield+bad+company+2&x=0&y=0&sprefix=battlefield] has become the fastest-selling game of 2010 in the UK, with server traffic "400% higher" than any other Battlefield title before it.

With all the drama and chaos surrounding Modern Warfare developer Infinity Ward [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/98761-Rumor-Security-Locks-Down-Infinity-Ward-Ousts-Studio-Head-UPDATE] last week, you might almost be forgiven for forgetting that another "modern combat" game hit shelves amidst the hubbub - almost. Fortunately for EA DICE, however, it turns out that lots of people didn't forget about Battlefield: Bad Company 2: in fact, quite the opposite.

According to GFK Chart-Track [http://www.chart-track.co.uk/?i=806&s=1111], Bad Company 2 "exploded" onto the all-format charts last week in the UK. Outselling the original 2008 Bad Company by 3-to-1, BBC2 topped sales charts for all three platforms on which it was released, with 53% of sales on the Xbox 360, 31% on the PS3 and 16% of its copies sold for the PC. Clearly, you can't just blame the game's popularity on PC fanboys disgruntled about the whole "MewTwo dedicated servers" fiasco.

Not only did Bad Company 2 outsell all competition last week, it became the fastest-selling game of 2010 thus far in the UK - no word yet about how it compares in the rest of the world, though.

There's a joke in here somewhere about the UK loving BBC, but I'll leave that one to you guys.

The game's popularity doesn't seem to be limited to our friends across the pond, though: Demand for the game was so high across the board that all three versions had technological issues created by overloaded servers. According to a post on the Battlefield blog [http://blogs.battlefield.ea.com/battlefield_bad_company/archive/2010/03/07/battlefield-bad-company-2-server-update-2010-03-07.aspx##], producer Gordon Van Dyke said that developer DICE was allocating further resources to help lighten the load.

[blockquote]All teams are actively engaged in diagnosis and remediation. We are adding additional services to alleviate load. Despite having a major infrastructure in place, the peak traffic this weekend has been huge, 400% higher than any other Battlefield's peak simultaneous users. The teams will continue to monitor the services closely. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience and will provide further updates on the latest developments as they are relevant.[/blockquote]

400% higher than even the bestselling classic Battlefield 1942? That's quite the happy problem to have on your end, DICE. Quite the happy problem indeed.

I mean, I get a lockjaw out of awesomeness.

I think you actually just made that joke Funk (and it was chuckle worthy, so kudos).

On topic: Good for DICE, I'll admit I want to see them succeed big with this title mostly out of spite for their competition's condescending PR spin (as I don't actually care about multiplayer shooters myself), but even so, it's nice to see they are only having problems because their game is far more successful than they anticipated. That is indeed the best sort of problem to have.

I have to admit, the Gameplay trailers look good - does it have dedicated server support for the PC? Not repeating my MW2 mistake of giving it a chance.

I see... I'm dumbfounded by this.

MW2 was a complete disappointment, so everyone decides to buy a game with basically the exact same premise? I just... What? Modern Warfare 2 earns in a crap ton of money, everyone hates it, and now BBC2 earns a crap ton of money. Guess what's going to happen in a few weeks?

I've been wanting to get this, but im not sure whether to get it on PC or Xbox. I have the first Bad Company on Xbox, and so it was relatively easy to find twats online. However, only 16% of copies of B:BC2 were bought on PC, so there might not be many full servers with low ping on PC.
Does anyone have any recommendations?

its because mw2 is the establishment and bc2 is the up and comer, and its kinda activision vs ea and currently activision is more hated by gamers

So it's all irrational then? Goodie. Thought I was missing something. Turns out the world is simply crazy. Again.

Though Ubisoft have pulled a wildcard against the PC gamers, so they might be turning it into a three way fight in the near future for the most hated publisher.

I'm sorry, but...what?

Have you played a Battlefield game? While, yes, they are both FPS' set in modern times, the two games are completely different at their core. MW2 is all about fast-paced, arena-style combat, BC2's battles take place with tanks, helicopters, HMMWVs and an assortment of vehicles all at the players' command across some pretty big damn maps.

Modern Warfare 2 is a game designed for the twitchy, frat boy-esque, Counter-Strike crowd whilst BC2 is more of a thinking man's "blow the shit out of everything" shooter. That's not even counting destructible environments, no killstreak rewards, no perks, etc.

I love this game but it is very buggy server wise. I mean like half of the people who bought it cant play the multiplayer. This is the case PC wise.

Its got Dedi Servers, yes. Still buggy as hell mind, but once they get those ironed out, it'll be great, its "workable" now, and at least the friends list is working, something they couldn't figure out how to fix in beta, which makes joining servers with friends on a whole lot easier than it was in beta.

There's nothing more satisfying than destroying a building that the whole enemy team is camping.

TAKE THAT CAMPERS, THE POWER BELONGS TO US NOW.
