What do you think the best game that came out in the 90's was? I started gaming right near the end of the 90's so I can't remember lots of game that came out around that time period. Can you guys jog my memories with some good titles from around then?

Pokemon Silver/Gold first came out in 1999. In Japan anyway.

If you won't accept that, I'll pick Pokemon Yellow. ^_^

I think there were better games released in the '90s, but I'm going to say Crash Bandicoot 3 because it was my first game ever and every time I play it the nostalgia crushes me like a cross breed of an elephant and a snorlax. Banjo Kazooie gets a fond second place for the slightly less nostalgic, but still extremely nostalgic, days at my best friend's house, as his was a N64 household whereas mine was a PS1.
Honorable mentions go to Spyro, Mario World, Yoshi's Island, Super Mario 64, Donkey Kong 64, Sonic 1, Sonic 2, Sonic 3 and a few others I can't think of right now because my nostalgia extends only to platformers and I didn't welcome many other genres into my heart until some point in the '00s

My personal favourites (some of which have already been mentioned):

  • [li]Age of Empires II[/li]
    [li]Banjo-Kazooie[/li]
[li]The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time[/li]
    [li]Lemmings[/li]
    [li]Super Mario 64[/li]
    [li]Theme Park[/li]
    [li]Theme Hospital[/li]

Yeah, I was an N64 kid :D.

Slightly off-topic: As someone who missed out on the 8- and 16-bit generations, the Wii's Virtual Console and similar services have been great for me to discover for the 1st time those "classics" that everyone raves on about. Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World, Link to the Past - all great games (esp. Link to the Past) and well deserving of their "classic" status, with or without nostalgia goggles.

Many excellent ones were mentioned here, so I won't repeat those. Just going to add two of my own. System Shock 2, for being the second scariest game I've ever played. Planescape: Torment for being... well, quite beyond anything I can do justice to with words.

I like a lot of games that were already mentioned but there is one game that can't be matched and it is Grim fandango(and sadly no one will ever try to make another point and click adventure again, except telltale games).

There are too many to choose, so I'll do this:

Super Mario Bros. 3
A Link to the Past
Chrono Trigger
Donkey Kong Country 2
Illusion of Gaia
Super Mario RPG
Final Fantasy Tactics
Brave Fencer Musashi
Megaman X
Metal Gear Solid
Super Mario 64
Starcraft

Meh, the hell with it! There are too many awesome games from the 90s and making a complete list would take all afternoon.

Also: While Ocarina of Time is a classic, I find it odd that so many people list it as being "the best game evar". I personally feel that it falls apart right around the time you get to the water temple (the whole equip-inequip iron boots thing). The rest of the game after that point seemed very hurried and almost lazily designed.

Metal Gear Solid... purely for the "love CAN bloom on the battlefield" talk with Otacon (I swear he was about to come out of the closet for snake in that game)

oh, and who could forget Half Life...

oh and Unreal Tournament/Unreal

oh... I'll stop now :p

I am gunna go with this. The Pokémon games played a vital part in my gaming childhood and I hold their memory dear.

I'm going with WCW vs. nWo World Tour since it almost perfected wrestling games and with a few tweaks gave us WWF No Mercy. The Asst. Manager at TRU had a crush on me (Even though I was just a regular customer of the store) and knew I loved wrestling took me aside and said "I've got something for you", then took me to the office and handed me WCW/nWo the day before it came out. If it wasn't for the employees coming in and out, I'd probably have done more than just the hug and kiss I gave her for it lol. (But that came later when I got a part time Christmas job there hehe)
