OCARINA OF TIME!!!
It did everything so right that a decade and a half later people are still comparing it's successors to it, I say that's quite an accomplishment.

The only other simile is FF7, which is another fantastic game.

So either Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, or Final Fantasy 7, take your pick. I prefer Legend of Zelda, though.

freespace best space simulator ever.

*wonders why so few real space simulators are left*

Dudes! We keep on with this nostalgia just how .long will it be before Nintendo EVER make another proper new IP? It's all "what was your favourite?" or "why won't they remake...?" these days even though we're already weighed down with sequel after sequel, HD collections of classics, old games on PSN/Live and Wii VC and straight remakes as it is(seriously, if Capcom continue the archive stuff for Resi on Wii they'll end up redoing EVERY installment and still not add motion controls!)-do we really want to encourage SE(the worst for it)and everyone else to think even less?

I love old games as much as the next guy-even play plenty-but I do worry that gaming is eating itself even quicker than pop music managed it.

I'm gonna be the odd one and say all the games Rareware realesed in the mid-late 90's Goldeneye, Jet Force Gemini, Banjo-Kazooie and Tooie,Killer Instict I&II, Conker's bad fur day (that may have been early 2000 though)

and to be really weird and add the best 90's game no one has heard of Space Station Silicon Valley... it was the first GTA game in a way and gave you the ability to play as a large variety of animals to solve puzzles.
and yes it did exist

Ape Escape, though it does compete with Ape Escape, Ape Escape and maybe with Ape Escape in a close fourth.
