Dudes! We keep on with this nostalgia just how .long will it be before Nintendo EVER make another proper new IP? It's all "what was your favourite?" or "why won't they remake...?" these days even though we're already weighed down with sequel after sequel, HD collections of classics, old games on PSN/Live and Wii VC and straight remakes as it is(seriously, if Capcom continue the archive stuff for Resi on Wii they'll end up redoing EVERY installment and still not add motion controls!)-do we really want to encourage SE(the worst for it)and everyone else to think even less?

I love old games as much as the next guy-even play plenty-but I do worry that gaming is eating itself even quicker than pop music managed it.
This post brings up a good point.

The gaming industry is part of the entertainment industry and as a result of such, they aren't just porting, remaking, and re-releasing games because it gets them easy money; they're doing this to make sure that truly great games remain accessible to future generations. I don't hear people complaining about a lack of "new properties" every time a record label releases another Beatles compilation, so why bother bitching about a developer's similar behavior?

This brings me to my next point. The word "nostalgia" seems to have taken on new life at Escapist as a loaded, bandwagon term that seems to have been redefined in order to add an air of derision to any game that isn't from the two most recent console generations and aside from smacking of video game snobbery & being behavior more suited for fans of "indie"-anything, is pretty goddamn pathetic.

What do you think the best game that came out in the 90's was? I started gaming right near the end of the 90's so I can't remember lots of game that came out around that time period. Can you guys jog my memories with some good titles from around then?
There are loads!

The one that popped into my head firsdt though, was Goldeneye.

Pathetic I may be but I'm not indicating there's anything inherently wrong with being nostalgic and was unaware of any anti nostalgia bandwagon here or anywhere else.

To me it's fact that we already seem to be getting games(great and not so great) made available in both original, old form AND new shiny, HD forms and any more would be to risk excess-that is all. It just makes me wonder , sometimes, why we clamour(and I'm as guilty as the next guy of feeling games like Ico or, even, Okami should be played by more people ansd wondering whether new demographics on different consoles to the ones they launched on might be beneficial to said games if an HD remake was made. However, and I TOTALLY disagree with your point about nobody minding even more milking of old bands back catalogues(Christ, we've even had songs griping about it for the past twenty years-and that's just going by my scant knowledge!)and especially when lables get a "dead star" on their hands to really flog, we see so many samey sequels, samey genres filled with lookalike games alongside any worthy candidates for remakes that, to me, the rate at which gaming has gone from a hotbed of fresh ideas to even gamers wishing for ideas repeated that it worries me a little.

Anyway, I'm certainly no game snob or indie gamer(I think Escapists quiz made that out on the basis I'd played, and not enjoyed very much btw, Braid!)and happily play blockbusters, Pc oddities, PSX PSN classics, VC/XBLA games alongside guilty pleasures(for some reason STILL play bloody Blade2 once a month and enjoy it!)and other games considered less than average by most gamers. Honestly, the reason behind me trying to make you think about where this might be headed isn't through some hatred of nostalgia(everyone rightly enjoys a little)but a fear that we're heading to a place where we look backwards as much, or more, than we do forwards and in an industry as young as this I find that both astounding and a touch concerning.

Intimate whatever you wish about me if you don't agree but, really, I think you jumped in with the steel toed boots in order to crush a grape by attributing arguments and positions to me that I simply never touch upon-though I do confess to being a little blurred on some points! Whatever, my point stands-I think it's a risk to encourage too much of this kind of thing when it must , to a greater or lesser extent, hinder the development of new ideas and properties. Just because someone thinks it would be nice to see something new and exciting rather than another REmake doesn't make them a bad person, surely? When you consider that the great games talked about as targets for remakes all started off as new ideas that excited us I fail to see what exactly is wrong with my stance or why it could be construed as snobbery of any kind.

Trust me, though, there's PLENTY of moaning when bands get milked and songs rereleased for the billionth time and always has been.Oh, and not just from people saying the time and money could have been better invested in new talent but also, and mainly actually, from the fans of those bands getting milked and the music press.
