What, nobody's mentioned Beyond Good and Evil? That's a brilliant opening, I think: the peace of the meditation scene broken by the invaders; panic as the shield fails and the aliens land; the capture of the children Jade has been caring for. It establishes the setting, the main character and the problem quickly and effectively. And then the cutscene ends and the game throws you and Jade straight into the action.

I particularly love how this first bit of gameplay matches the player's experience with Jade's. There's no tutorial, no chance to practice combat in a safe environment. And Jade is no fighter. It's an emergency; Jade just grabs a nearby branch and heads into the fray, and the player starts hitting buttons, learning by experience.

[Prototype]'s opening was freakin' awesome to watch! The rest of the game didn't really compare, sadly.
Also Arkham Asylum's opening. But mostly because you get to walk around as the Batman, cape swirling around, looking perpetually moody. There's something special about walking down a corridor thinking "I'm the god-damn Batman!"

MW2. That's Mechwarrior 2 by the way kids. Those opening cinematics, in the original campaign, Ghost Bear's Legacy, and Mercenaries gave me goosebumps.

After all this time with so many great games released after it, Super Metroid still has the most awesome intro I have ever seen. The music, picture and intro instantly sold me.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ls5uo4xidwQ - As well as the title screen, it's just powerful.

Mass Effect 2's starting cutscene. Epic and just so right to start off an almost flawless game.

Dead Space. Defenceless and running from something you don't understand.

I think Half Life and it's 'calm before the storm' type opening is really good. Simple, yet very, very effective. And then when the shit hits the fan after the resonance cascade, it just becomes out and out awesome.
FFFFFFfFFFFffffFuuuu beaten to it.

Dark Colony - obscure game but has an intro I can remember so well. It's also pretty graphic for it's time I'd say

"YOU BUG EYED FREAK! AHHHHH!" - priceless

Arkham Asylums whole intro sequence (before you actually start playing) was pretty kick ass as well.

It turned into one-ups-manship almost instantly. XD

I really like The World Ends With You's intro, but for me it's hard to top this;

the intro to Pokemon Red/Blue.

I liked the opening where the search bar was used. Oh wait...

Seriously, Bioshock. That was an awesome opening.
The made intro also mad BioShock more immersive for some reason.

World at War's, nothing makes a game more intresting when you see your fellow soldier have a cigar burnt in his eyes and his throat slit.

Half-Life 1's, a slow change of pace between bumbling around corridors to shooting Marines in a fight for survival.

I always preferred slow openings, but in this case:

All the openings from the Half Life games, the System Shock 2 opening, Crysis Opening, FEAR, and every opening from Silent Hill.
