It establishes the setting, the main character and the problem quickly and effectively. And then the cutscene ends and the game throws you and Jade straight into the action.
I particularly love how this first bit of gameplay matches the player's experience with Jade's. There's no tutorial, no chance to practice combat in a safe environment. And Jade is no fighter. It's an emergency; Jade just grabs a nearby branch and heads into the fray, and the player starts hitting buttons, learning by experience.
