Pokemon Silver/Gold/Crystal. Contained both Johto and Kanto regions(16 badges) and had just the right amount of pokemon(After Silver, it just got ridiculous them adding 100 odd pokemon every game).

Hard to say really, for sentimental reasons id say my favourite is blue because it was in the first set (and my personal first, Blastiose rocks!) though Yellow is close because of the Anime references.

As for best game I cant say as each generation improves on the one before and the directer cut versions even more so. I don't own White/Black yet so I cant judge them. I think ill still say Blue because it had the original story and a ton of features that were way ahead of its time for a classic gameboy game even with slight future connectivity in that it could still work with G/S/C to an extent and dont forget the rare candy cheat/Missingno appearance.

Second Generation (Gold/Silver/Crystal) had the best Pokémon line-up the rest after that were a bit silly, HeartGold and SoulSilver were good nethertheless though but the original GameBoy Colour ones have that nostalgic feel to them.

I'd say Soul Silver. Just like Silver, only updated and there is so much you can do in it, even after the Elite 4. With the rest of the games, there is just the Elite 4, then some minor stuff/battle areas that give you no exp or anything, and you are done.

Blue/Yellow purely for nostalgia. I was king of my little nerd clique of poképals at school.

Game wise, White is proving to be the most awesome and story based engaging. If I had one complaint it's that pokémon don't follow you around anymore, like in yellow/HGSS.

Also, Blastoise, Nidoking and Braviary are the most ass kickingy ass kickers to have ever kicked ass.
Haha Blastioise kicks all ass XD
From one Blastoise fan to two others did you guys like Wartortle? I hated him so much id purposely grind just to get rid of him yet I dunno why I did?

Squirtle rocks too it was only Wartortle I had this problem with

I think they tend to get better with each generation. I didn't play Gen 4 though.

I'm really enjoying Pokemon White at any rate.

HeartGold.

Yes, it's a remake, but they took the best game in the series, which was already full to bursting with 2 regions, fairly good difficulty and inspired 'mon. And here they developed the story more, added everything that made Diamond and Pearl brilliant, Pokemon following you was a nice touch (something that I still miss from B/W) and added so much to keep you playing post 16 badges.

I have to say the Silver version, because it's the only game that DOESN'T remove any features to my knowledge from it's predecessor, but instead builds upon a strong concept, plus nostalgia has blinded me by it

I do enjoy the White (and subsequently Black) version(s) because they don't fall into the add-em-ons of previous games, and even try to recapture the excitement and thrill of new discovery that made the 1st game so memorable. The new strategies, the heavier story, and the interactions w/ NPCs are a strong step in a franchise that had been interesting but stale. However...I won't lie, it seems like some of the new pokemon are attempts to make the Red/Blue lightning strike twice. A normal bull pokemon, a happy looking pokemon, a pokemon that looks like an item. There are a lot of things to nag about, but overall I'm enjoying the experience and having fun, the new challenges are exciting ^^

HeartGold/SoulSilver.

I loved the originals back in the day, but looking back past the nastalgia, they were horribly buggy, slow, painfully boring once you beat the Elite 4, and kinda bad. The differences over the generations each stack ontop of eachother, so going backwards just feels wrong.

Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald/FireRed/LeafGreen made awesome strides by modifying the underlying mechanics of the game, making it appear unchanged for most people, but extremely open to people who wished to dive deeply into the game and its mechanics. Abilities, IV's (0-31 instead of 1-15), Items (new berries, new hold items, etc) and moves made the third Generation extremely dynamic.

The fourth Generation, consisting of Diamond/Pearl/Platium/HeartGold/SoulSilver polished over some of the jagged edges, and incorperated 2.5D Graphics and online play. The physical/special split let the individual moves decide if they were effected by Attack/Special Attack, rather than there typing: making some useless Pokemon useful.

HeartGold/SoulSilver was my favorite because it was LOADED with new and old Content. Back in the day I loved Gold/Silver, and this was what a remake should be: a perfect mixture or new and old features, a fresh new game with a twist of nestalgia.

I did buy White version, and so far, its... different. Im not far enough in to tell if its a good different, or a bad different. You can only build so far before you run out of space to improve, and Pokemon appears to be hitting that mark. This game felt like more of a game for competitive people, giving them more edgy moves to put into their toolbox (so, ya know, not every team will pack an Earthquake...). Its fun, one of the best yet, but the changes make me feel underwhelmed.

I think after the third version of B/W, the only place the series can go without stagnating is to an MMO setting.

Which I wouldnt mind...

My favorite game in the series has to be ruby/sapphire.

This series has some of the best legendaries in the existence of Pokemon, no other gen has mad me love all of the legendaries like this one. Winona and Liza/tate were some of the best gym leaders I've ever faced.

Now if we are doing nostalgia as well I have to say red because that was my very first Pokemon game and still well loved.

Gen 2 games(silver, gold, and crystal), they included an all new adventure and all of the gyms of the first one, the perfect sequel.

I still believe Diamond and Pearl were the best of the series. There was a good level curve, the events and places were interesting and the new pokemon were pretty good, especially the starters and the new evolutionary offshoots to less than stellar one-offs.

Gold/Silver/HG/SS

Back in the days when nearly all Pokémon could fit onto one game. You could catch pretty much most Gen I Pokémon in them, and obviously all Gen II's so it gave such a bigger variety imo. Later games just seem to be trying to shove their new Pokémon down your throat, by making any Poké's from other generations either mega rare or non existent.
