Red. Nothing compares to Red for me. Not even FireRed, even if I am enjoying that one.
Agreed! The fact that it's the only Pokemon game I have ever played is a small factor to!

and all Pokemon after the 150 first are unworthy!

Pokemon Gold/Silver for a good few reasons.

I really have to say that since Gold/Silver, I have felt that the series has went downhill; -SNIP-
I agree with you wholeheartedly. I loved Crystal on the Gameboy Color and spent a good 3 years of my life on it, but the later games were really lackluster in my opinion. I'm especially frustrated with Heart Gold/Soul Silver and Black/White, and have avoided them like the plague.
Wouldn't say I've avoided them like a plague... but I never got past the 5th(?) gym on Pearl/Diamond/Platinum, just finished the 8th gym on Heart Gold/Soul Silver and refuse to go anywhere near Black/White. I no longer possess any of the first three and am considering selling the second one (not played it in around half a year or whatnot, I forget). Still get the GameBoy ones out once in a while, especially if I'm going on holiday for a while.

Are we counting Mystery Dungeons? If so, Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time/Darkness/Sky.
Its story was brilliant and I am not afraid to admit I cried like a little girl felt touched at certain parts.

I'm gonna go with Pokemon Gold. I'm thinking of grabbing Heart Gold for my DS later this week.

Yellow. Then maybe FireRed.

Yellow was the first one I got, I remember spending an entire Christmas day trying to beat the first gym...

Crystal, because I think 250 pokemon was a good number, plenty of malleability and choice, without getting too hard to keep track of. I also dislike the art style of the pokemon afterwards. And it has extra content that Gold/silver lack: Buenas password, extra unown puzzles, growlithes before the Sudowoodo.etc.

I think yellow because I got all the starters but if they made a remake of ruby/sapphire with the ability to go to a different region post game it would be no contest.
I wish they would, it would be awesome :D

GSC because you can go back to Kanto and everyone knows that Kanto has the best region and Pokemon and eeeeeeeevvvvvvvverrything. I mean, like, you can get 16 badges! That's twice the amount of badges as all the other games! That's so much more to do! And then Red, like, omg, he had 80-something Pokemon! Nothing was more enjoyable than grinding mid-level 40 Pokemon over and over!

*cough*
GSC would probably get my vote for most revolutionary/game-changing of the franchise, but it's a buggy and unbalanced mess. They only somewhat fixed it in the remakes but they still managed to fuck it up. By no means a bad game, probably my third favorite generation in the series.

At this point, probably Platinum.
Region - the mountain essentially splitting the place in two, the northern snowy summit, the trio lakes, Stark Mountain/Battle Frontier island. It was varied and put together nicely. Hoenn is still my favorite, but Sinnoh is close and reminiscent of it. Kanto and Johto are both extremely plain to me, being generic grassland-like areas - the newly added routes to the Safari Zone in HGSS probably being the most interesting. Unova is really nice, especially since the seasonal changes keep them fresh.
Storyline - I really liked the Distortion World's inclusion, though I didn't care too much for Team Galactic. I remember their headquarters being really cool though. I liked Magma/Aqua the best probably, because you actually see their plans come into fruition more so than anyone else, and eco-terrorism is different.
Culture - Sinnoh had a lot of folklore that gave itself more of an identity. I would expect this the most from Johto, but Sinnoh had much more.
Music - the music was very different in DPPt. I wouldn't say it's the best in the series, but it was nice change. Was much more atmospheric than previous generations, incorporating jazzy and western-feeling tunes and just having a much broader range of styles in general.
Poketch - best app in the game, bar none. The Pokegear and Pokenav were terrible in comparison, mainly because the phone mechanic was terribly implemented. Vs. Seeker took care of what the phone did ten times better and didn't rely on me waiting at its beck and call for me to have rematches.
Also, the Pokeradar. This was such an amazing item that makes me continuously come back to playing Platinum.

Worse thing about DPPt was probably the Pokemon themselves. Not many new ones in retrospect as they went back to make older Pokemon like Magmar and Tangela even uglier than they already were, but certainly enough were I can make a regional team comfortably. Black and White made up for it though.

Edit: oh yeah, forgot to mention the Underground. It was fun just going down there to dig up fossils and shards, even if I didn't need them.

Gold was amazing back in the day. I enjoyed it a lot as it pretty much improved every area of an amazing game. And though I haven't played much of it, the remake's interface is so polished I'm surprised it didn't get carried over to B/W. Speaking of which, as somewhat of a reboot of the series, B/W is also great. The whole thing is just great :)

I would say Black/White. Heartgold/Soulsilver would be a close one as well, simply because it's a remake of Gen 2 only with the advancements that the series has made. On an off-topic note, I seriously cannot play Gen 1 without forcing myself to, it just feels so bad now and I think Gamefreak didn't know they were going to have a cash cow when they were making it.

Blue. Technically Red and Blue, but I liked Blue's exclusives better. I like that except for Mew, between the two you actually can catch them all without anything more than 2 games (and what its needed to trade) and enough time and effort. No special events, no E-reader, no needing to tactifully trade between ALL th games in the right order.
