MW2 the one where you have to free the hostages on the oil rig, just love the start of that mission.

Multiplayer though i would probably say Dust 2 on CS:S, one of the most balanced non symmetrical maps i have played

ctf-facing worlds and dm... damn, that one in low gravity where you're hopping between three skyscrapers.

Those two maps pretty much sold me on fps. Was never big into the genre before, but when the Unreal Tournament demo came out and I got to play those maps it was just an incredible experience, especially for its time. The visuals alone might look antiquated by todays standards, but back in yonder days it was truly mind-blowing. And what's better, the game ran on just about anything. Hell, it even has a mode to support computers without any sort of video card... seriously. Didn't work very well, but it was there!

The entirety of VANQUISH.. Super well crafted
This, this, and this.

Along with the Metal Gear Solid series, especially MSG3 and MGS4; MGS4 was a bit light on gameplay but the gameplay that was there was great, and the level design was top notch.

Uncharted 2 has some really awesome set pieces and just plain well designed levels that made for great shootouts.

I liked the Silent Cartographer from Halo 1 and the Sniper Level from CoD: MW

CoD 4 - All Ghillied Up + One Shot One Kill (that bit in the fairground was just awesome!)
CoD WaW - The first and last missions for the Ruskies (Hunting Nazis in Stalingrad and then hunting Nazis in Berlin)
Alien Swarm - Elevator (Get some nice XP in there)
Medal Of Honour 2010 - Don't know the name of it, but its the first level with Dante, fighting like 5000 Taliban in that tiny hut as it gets blown apart

Call of Duty 4 - The sniping/stealth section with MacMillian was very well paced and excecuted.
Half-Life 2 - Ravenholm.

Half life 2, when the gravity gun gets overcharged. Nothing's as fun as blasting half a dozen overwatch soldiers with lightning.

Yep, you're right, that's the one. Not really the 'best' map I've ever played in terms of layout or design, but my god, did it leave one helluva impression playing it for the first time and it was bloody fun!

Who knows how many hours were whittled away playing that map over and over before I finally ended up buying the game. Good times!

HEAT on Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. This level managed to make me angry, frustrated and, at the end, euphoric when I got through it on Veteran. For once on a game I truely believed this is the difficulty that this level should be played on for the greatest effect. I mean look at it:

You are under assault from an overwhelming force of potentially hundreds who are escorted by tanks, RPG teams and equiped with archaic weapons. As for your answer you bring all you can bare to the fight, but it is not enough to repel this aggresive body, fueled by beliefs foreign to your own. After falling back you learn you need to get back down the hill you just scaled under intense fire. You break out and the music starts playing, with Gaz spurring you on:
" Let's-go-let's-go, come on get down the hill"

All Ghillied Up from CoD certainly was one of the better single player ones.

But in the end I'm going to go with Office and Dust from CS, or the Emergency Room in Rainbow Six: Rogue spear (one of the expansion packs). Say what you may, but if you're still happy about a level after literally knowing every square inch of it then it's a good one.

One of my all time favourtie multiplayer maps is 'The very end of you' from Quake 3. Playing against the bots that just suicide run the BFG crusher. Most of them end up with a massive negative score.

HALO: CE second level when you step out of your downed escape pod onto Halo . . . wow.
i cant stand that level, too big and open, as in, Forge World from Reach kind've too big and open, and the graphics quality put me off the whole game =[

i'd say... the Just Cause 2 Map(seeing as it's 1 big thing), i know that it's even BIGGER than what i complained about, but it somehow works, it gives me FREEDOM to go on the game, sit there, see a jet, on a whim, nick it, fly it into a base 11/9 style and parachute out at the last second and lay waste to everything else, or just go for a commute along the 'freeway' in a Tuk Tuk, as long as i dont hit the police and be forced to go to plan b: kill everyone and do the first idea(with the jet etc, seeing as how i own all but maybe 2 of the airports)...

but, the whole thing is well thought out, has pleasing graphics and doesnt dissapoint with insane difficulty...

and what's all this about 'crysis 2'(sounds rubbish from what i've heard) and it's graphics? they look like Reach's graphics because it looks grainy and blurred, i turn, i dont want to see wind rushing as i turn or anything like that, the mass of detail makes it LESS detailed

Can we suggest ones from multiplayer?
I loved Face Classic and Morpheus from Unreal Tournament 2004 (I'm aware that they may have been in previous Unreal games but the first one I had was 2004)
Face Classic was amazing, especially on instagib matches, you'd have body parts flying all over the place. I was really annoyed when they weren't in UT3.
