FFVII's Cloud Aeris romance was stupid. The only evidence of any romance at all was a shift in the music. All the actual romantic scenes are with Tifa.

My fave romance is probably Viconia and you from Baldur's Gate 2. Talk about a harsh mistress.

and Alyx/Mr Freeman isn't bad considering he's a mute. (although he'll probably say something in the last Half-Life.)

Oh man, I've got visions of some hoarse guttural echo billowing forth from Freeman's throat to spell out the words. "THE END"

And then he tears apart into a spillage of headcrabs which have been germinating inside his body ever since he's been to the alien planet and breathed in the spores.

The Jaheira romance is by far the hardest to get to work btw. It's also bugged so you may need scripting tools to get it to continue at some points, unless you're really lucky.

Rinoa/Squall and Yuna/Tidus were just AWFUL. FF needs to stop with the 'main characters fall in love' tripe. Even Rosa/Cecil wasn't that great...but I do like Celes/Locke ^_^
For best...how about Solid Snake and Otacon? XD

In my opinion the best would be The Darkness. I mean, even I got attached to Jenny. It's totally justfied, and not overdone at all. And the scene where you know what happens... very atmospheric and lifelike
(if you don't count the darkness thing. imo that shouldn't have been in to begin with, it would have been an excellent maffia story without this whole demon bullshit but i guess the Xbox kiddies wouldn't have bought that)

could be because without the demon bit darkness would not be darkness......considering it's the male counterpart to the Witchblade... so the comic fans would have been alittle upset

"The Darkness" and "Fear Effect 2" featured two very mature love stories for their time.

Bad love stories are alsways obvious from the beginning and get awkward when everyone in the game acts surprised.

Honorable mentions to "Braid" and "Kane & Lynch". Not exactly love stories, but powerful nontheless.

usually having 3 stories going at once doesnt work - jenny, paulie and the darkness but the game pulls it off!
but why does he never ask why the tentacles coming out of his back want to eat hearts? mine only want cake...

WHY, oh WHY have no one mentioned Baldur's Gate II?!

That game had the most excellent Love story subplots in any game to date. And the game was just EPIC WIN overall as well.
Seriously, play it. Now.

Baldur's Gate is my favourite game series by far, hands down. I still play them all.
And, yes, BG2 has amazing love stories (And amazing stories over-all). Both the Aerie and Jaheira love stries are so so well done, even when they are fighting over you. Rather, especially when they are fighting over you.

I would have to say Baldur's gate 2. The character interaction in that game is definitely the best ever done, but the male main character has a choice of 3 very well executed love stories. Sadly the female only has 1, the other's were not implemented in time.

Worst would be Jade empire and Mass effect. They both are forced and badly written. The very end of the game is where you are presented with both and have to choose one. It's so fucking stupid.
